Drew I can tell you as someone who's dad sold persian rugs here in the US, you received a great deal for some high quality rugs. Aside from them having practical use to cover your floors and decorate homes, you can think of these rugs as art pieces. My grandfather was a carpet designer in Iran and growing up I used to see how much work was put to make a carpet. Casual buyers can easily be swindled, so if you lack preparation and research, paying a premium to go to a well established dealer is a safer bet. Otherwise, you are most likely to be told all sorts just to get a sale believing you have a good deal.
I'm from that region, the problem is a very small portion of that money goes to the people who weave the things for mounth or even years. The shop guy makes more than 50% of the profit. It's really sad.
The value isn't that high, considering its quality. Just pay attention to this important note: DO NOT WALK ON CARPETS WHILE WEARING SHOES! It significantly reduces their average life time, and yet that's a mistake that most foreigners do.
