Thank you for sharing this story! I remember my father telling me that there were Spanish that visited the area---but I didn't quite believe him. My family is of both Amercian Indian and European heritage. The older people would share some of this history. It is great to see these histories now being shared more widely. It is amazing, now that I am older and we have much more technology to learn and share, I understand that many of those so called "old people's" stories were actually true (or at least based on truth). (BTW, read your bio...my Dad was a DDay vet. AND he was around when the Naval Audit Service was created. Boy...the stories he could tell. He also did some support for the Teams in the early days. So, Sir, hats off to you for duty and career. I know from living with Dad, NAS was not an easy place to work/job! Unsung heroes!)
Our history tells that Paquinquino was kidnapped, like many other Native Americans, and kept prisoner/slave by the Spanish. Paquinquino was forced into Christianity, and complied until he could escape back home. He witnessed the horrors of Spanish slavery in Mexico. Paquinquino may be the same name as Opechancanough, paramount chief and relative of Powhatan. The Algonquian alliance was defending their land from invaders who were forcing Christianity on us.
Sadly the Spanish and well as the rest of Europeans didn't have the true gospel of the new testament they believe the trinity lie with its traditions of men they didn't understand the Apostles doctrine as found in the book of acts or Acts 2 38 and its importance they false gospel doesn't produced the new birth or changed lives its carnal.its. an other gospel

Well, that bought them a little time. I think the serious lack of resources provided just as much defense as a few dead Spaniards did, however. The lack of fighting men among the settlers shows it was not a high priority to the Spanish. Selling the boy back seems like a questionable move, tactically speaking. Perhaps he was too young or unimportant to serve as a useful long term hostage. Possibly holding on to him was a liability, once the Spanish were aware he still lived. I don't see the Spanish making much of a settlement in Virginia at this time anyway, as their efforts to the south were so much more rewarding, and Virginia had so little to offer in terms of resources.
Thanks for making this interesting video. I have studied the life Paquiuineo for many years and I am always looking for new information about him. He was the father of Chief Powhatan. His name was Don Luis de Velasco and he was born in Velasco Cuba. I know that it sounds like a native name but it was his Portuguese nickname meaning “little Francis.” For what I have come to understand, Don Luis was the son of Jewish father that had escaped the Spanish Inquisition. We know that Columbus had brought a Hebrew interpreter named Luis. His mother was probably native. I believe that the murder of the missionaries to be revenge for the inquisition and as you say “stopping the spread of the Spanish missionaries” it that part of America. Thank you so much.

People forgetting Spanish had allies from other natives tribes, few Spaniards didn’t just randomly conquer Aztec empire on its own this is a liberal ideology, just saying to make people sure about this. And I think that area was colonized by the British then 13 colonies
It wasn’t only the spanish all europeans had alliances with native tribes. They had to if they want it to succeed in America. The British settled in Virginia because the Spanish failed to colonize it. They were able to defeat them because they were busy with more important affairs. But when the British came they didn’t have the same outcome. (King Philip’s war)
Virginia was part of Spanish empire since 1513 by ponce de Leon and brtish settlers started going even though Virginia was part of Spain until 1624 Spain gave it to England and the Spanish killed a lot of indigenous with diseases and weapons and Spanish could’ve stopped the British getting to Virginia but the Spanish allowed them without a military response I think the Spanish made it a lot easer for the British to colonize while Spain basically did all the work

Spanish Catholicism is not biblical Christianity. Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself. Love your enemies. Do good to them that hate you pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you that you may be the children of your father which are in heaven.

Who knows, maybe what happened in Virginia may have had an affect in Roanoke. Did the Indians spread the information of this story.
