Excellent video and I plan to watch more of your series. I am by no means expert and what brought me here was I just watched a video on early colonies. That video makes the point that Don Luis (it used his tribal name) had witnessed the treatment of non Christians while traveling with the Spaniards and he was motivated to not let that abuse happen to his tribe. He would have witnessed it up close and at large scale while in Mexico City.
Hey there. I assume (but, don't know, if) you're familiar with Dr. David Moore's excavations at Joara and Juan Pardo's fort, which have been conducted by Warren Wilson college .
@@HistoricalContextUSA Thanks for your reply. They've had ongoing projects (for about 25 years now) that have provided a wealth of information. Dr. Moore is a good one to talk with (as well as a nice guy). Later.
@@HistoricalContextUSA Hey, again. I'm presently watching an excellent video about the excavations at Juan Pardo's Ft. San Juan at/in Joara. It's called "The First Lost Colony", and was done by UNCarchaeology. Later.
Thank you so much for making this video. I am particularly interested in what motivated Don Luis to murder the Jesuits. I am convinced through my research that Don Luis was the son of a crypto Jewish father and a native mother. He was born in the Caribbean and migrated to Virginia where he became the father of Chief Powhatan. I believe that revenge against the Spanish for the inquisition accounts for his savage attack on the mission. Thanks again for your scholarship.
There was a Spanish Colony in Nova Scotia in the 1580s. Great video !
Thank you for sharing that. I'll try to read about that in the future!
Your doing a great job!
Thank you!
Great video! it would be nice to have more information on the motivations that led Don Luis to such an extreme choice!
Yes. Information from this era is lacking. For the most part, telling the story is limited to a couple of sources.

Thanks for watching and commenting! It was not a story I was aware of until I came across it!
Did the massacre occur in North Carolina ?? And where did the famine occur Chesapeake is up by Niagara falls ???
The massacre occurred near present day York County, Virginia. Chesapeake Bay is in that area.
Establishing a Mission is never done with morally decent intentions. That's just not a reality.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
