I’ve watched several makeovers from you. I think this is my favorite. I love that you have a covered good sized dining area and then the beautiful covered seating area with fireplace and bar but then you have a lovely open air seating area with a very elegant fireplace. The retaining wall was the right thing for that sloping yard. Bravo! PS. Bet they never sit on the upper deck now that they have such an inviting back patio and yard!!
Laura - I believe you are right about the upper deck - however, once covid is put to bed, perhaps in a large party setting, the upper deck will be used. It has a beautiful view. thank you for your feedback.

Hi I'm living in Johannesburg South Africa and for more than a year I could not figure out how to redesign my backyard outdoor space I kept speaking to the wrong people and wanted to start with a pergola a covered space but after seeing your very first video I knew exactly what my space needed as most people are saying old fashion just fill space with grass and soften the edges I did not want that was looking for flow from the pool area into a great entertainment outdoor space even spoke to a design student who perhaps will give me some great ideas but not quite what I was looking for
I just moved into a new house and the backyard has a lot of potential. I am in Pensacola Florida. I also want to include an RV campsite as a guest house.

You have many great ideas. I have a simply backyard facing a lake that has a bird habitat in the middle of that lake. Many different kinds of birds come to visit there. My backyard is a almost a blank slate, ready for a design. I would like a water and fire feature a free standing covered deck with a bar, a nice garden and a privacy wall, a walkway from the deck to the lake ending with another small sitting area close to the lake. All this sounds expensive but would look awesome.

Beautiful overall design, but I have a concern about the placement of the bar-b-q. Placing the bar-b-q so close to the house and new wall seems like a potential fire hazard. Where does the greasy smoke go? It looks like it would be trapped in that covered space by the house. My bar-b-q puts out a fair amount of smoke when I'm using it three times a week and mine is well away from my house siding. Please consider fire safety.

I would love this. The only thing I would do different is a bigger overhang over the bar stools so days it is warm but rainy, you could still sit at the bar and enjoy.

Let's see - In many of our videos there are elements you could grab for smaller space yards. Take the property here: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/peterson-property/ - they put a dry creek bed in, then added a small bubbler feature as the water element, a trellis over some boulder steps near raised garden beds. They used their existing under-deck as a cover and added décor pieces. In this next property: paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/modern-home-landscaping/ you could create a concrete firepit with a pergola cover and complete it in stages. Like more of a garden look? paradiserestored.com/portfolio_item/minimalist-garden/ - These features are doable in small spaces - the fireplace wall may not be in some peoples' price range but the other elements would work well. In this backyard we stuffed quite a bit in while creating small destination spots along the long bench. Beautiful overall design, but I have a concern about the placement of the bar-b-q. Placing the bar-b-q so close to the house and new wall seems like a potential fire hazard. Where does the greasy smoke go? It looks like it would be trapped in that covered space by the house. My bar-b-q puts out a fair amount of smoke when I'm using it three times a week and mine is well away from my house siding. Please consider fire safety.
