I have fond memories of playing this game at my local bowling alley as a kid. The joystick was so unique that my arm would always hurt after playing. Great video!
I don't know what audio hardware Atari games of that era used, but they had the best sound. Even their standard "coin inserted" chime (you know the one) had a deep resonance to it.
I learned it from Jeff at 720zone. Check out th-cam.com/users/720Jeff. His play throughs and website have great info on upping your score. (And the game in general)
Thanks. I like to do big airs and spins in the Ramp park and eek in some of the big jumps in the Downhill and the Slalom. Playing for high score you need to play those parks totally different and push the time racking up points between parks to the limit.
Thanks! I admit that sometimes when I'm playing for medal score I'm lazy and just do enough to get the tickets you need to hit all the parks. It feels a bit odd, because I had never done that as a kid.
Same here. Even when I started playing the game I seemed to get more play per quarter that a bunch of other stuff. Of course I was likely just really terrible at everything else.
Thanks. I've never had anyone else play my machine that could get beyond 200k or so. It's been a while since I 've been able to add a new score to my machine's top 15 for points either though.
Have you ever seen the McTwist animation in the game? Back when I worked in a computer lab I downloaded this game on MAME. I gave myself plenty of credits so I could skate at my leisure and get all of the equipment before competing in each event. It was either the last, or second last time doing the ramp competition where I did the McTwist. As you can imagine it's all but impossible to score a lot using a keyboard. Anyhow I kept pushing the kick button, and was getting good air. On the last push the character did another fastplant, sending him much higher than before, it felt like a screen and a half higher than the highest air. The character did a McTwist animation, actually tucking in on the spin, and inverting. I'd never seen that before. And thankfully my coworkers were there as a witness. See if you can get that on film.
On the arcade game I used to do mctwists all the time. If I recall correctly the trick was to hold down the kick and jump button at the same time and release them when the skater got to the edge of the ramp. It looks great but I think it's only worth 500 pts and it takes times off too so it's a crowd pleaser but if you want points you're better off with upgraded helmet and shoes and spinning a lot on the jumps.
Yup. The McTwist is awesome and this game is impossible on mame with a keyboard or gamepad. I'm not sure this is the only person with this project, but The Wolf of Gaming made a USB attached standard 720 controller. th-cam.com/video/HOAOXvGNstQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TheWolfofGaming
Ramp is definitely the most straight forward high scoring park. If you go for points instead of a good medal, you can earn a lot of points in both the downhill and slalom parks too.
GameCube is a tough way to play this. Anything without the original stick controller is a tough way to play this. It is fun to see what it looks like on other systems and how well, or not, folks can play it.
Yikes! that was as greedy as you can get for this game. a buck a play would have been rough. 50 cents was the most I recall in the wild and 3 continues instead of the default 2.
That was truly marvelous play, man; can't remember seeing anything even remotely close. I genuinely fear for your machine's trackball and buttons - I bet they're not exactly easy to replace! (Worth it, though - well done!) :)
Heh. Buttons are easy to replace. The controller stick is either hard to find and expensive, or complicated/fiddly and possibly hard to find/expensive for parts to rebuild.
Heavy nostalgia for this... I never went for the medal count, always for the points. Bitd, I popped around the 420k mark - that's with the two continues. I would love to find out after all these years what triggers the 1k flags. I'm leaning towards what you have for equipment.
420K seems to be an excellent score. The old twin galaxies would have that in top 10 I think. I have messed around a bit with less than 3 of shoes, board, and helmet but the bonus points still seem totally random to me.
Thanks. Also heck out the 720 Zone videos I linked in the description. He is playing for high score and is where I learned a lot on how to push up my high score for points.
Hmm, I think I can actually work out how the medal score is calculated. It's the class of the event you attended multiplied by a multiplier based on whether you get a bronze, silver, or gold. Bronze is 1, silver is 2, and gold is 3. The max medal score you can definitely get is 4 * 4 * 3 + 4 * 8 * 3 + 4 * 9 * 3 + 4 * 10 * 3 = 16 * 3 + 32 * 3 + 36 * 3 + 40 * 3 = 48 + 96 + 108 + 120 = 372.
LOL. Skin of my teeth. I believe the star level downhill is the hardest to get gold. Next hardest being star level jump. Both would be impossible if I hadn't seen other players do it first.
16:52.........omg... i thought i was the only one who knew that....i thought it was a glitch.. mind you im 47 now and last i played this.... at least 25 years ago... theres a few hidden moves... i've done a judo air, a madonna, and if you hold the jump a mctwist, and a few handplants..
I learned that lip grind trick from 720zone.com www.720zone.com/720-Gameplay.html#Advanced. Lots of great tips on that page. Someday I'll get around to recording more gameplay and isolate some of the other tricks.
always called that one mr yuck. I like the way it looks. Not the best for medal count, but if you are playing for high score it can be better than trying for gold.
Many hours spent playing and watching others play when I was a kid. I don't think I ever would have figured out how to get gold on the star level downhill without seeing someone else do it.
same as twin galaxy's rules, except free play turned on. Settings of 8-Toggle Switch on 720 CPU PCB (at ¾) 1-3 = ON 4-8 = OFF Settings of 8-Toggle Switch on 720 CPU PCB (at 5/6A) 1 = OFF 2 = ON 3-8 = OFF
Is it necessary or optimal to mash the the kick button nonstop like you’re doing? Even on the downhill stage, for example, where you are squatting and unable to kick?
I hate slalom. Are you using the actual 360 degree arcade joystick on this? You know you can land on the roof of the building where the half pipe is and get points. 700 I think
Heh, yup. It's an actual arcade machine. I'm not sure everything is entirely original to the cabinet, but its a standard controller for the game. I tried to play this via emulator on PC and all options for controls were terrible. I hate landing on the roof at the ramp as it messes up my flow of big airs. I always try to avoid it, but end up there a lot anyways. It can also mess of the game where you kind of glitch and don't get back on to the ramp normally when you come off the roof.
I only press jump off the ramps. Some of them you need to jump early to hit the target. Especially the very last one on the star park level. Number of shoes, boards, and helmets will have some effect on this too.
Hey man, i see you got skills! Maybe its my end but your button presses seem wonkey to me. Around the 8:32 mark. Your push button sounds dont seem to match the pushes the character is doing..
@@neilfleischhacker1115 gotcha! I could never get a hang of the ramp. I gotta see what your doing. We got a pinball spot near me, And it has a 720 machine.
I was hoping to hear the bad a** soundtrack of the 720 arcade game when somebody really Kix a** at it. But I heard was the button being slammed for a minute or so.
Understandable, but I can't play well and gently tap the buttons. I'm also too lazy to setup a separate mic to capture audio closer to the speaker (or figure out a way to capture the audio directly from the outputs).
The theory for higher scores forgoes getting more than 2 pairs of shoes and maybe 2 boards(iirc). I always get 3 of helmet, shoes, and board because I like spinning 1080's and get pretty consistent 700 and 800 points for them. All the items max out at 3. Also you only need pads if you fall ;)

Atari were at their peak then imho. Return to the planet of the robot monsters was when the downfall started.
I use to play this game as much as I could at the mall arcade when it came out in the 80's. It was my favorite game.
never seen Ramp grind at the beginning, love it!

NCF incredible man! Thank You so much for uploading this

Serious skills, one of my favourite cabs of all time. Really like your style too, great to watch.
Thanks. I like to do big airs and spins in the Ramp park and eek in some of the big jumps in the Downhill and the Slalom. Playing for high score you need to play those parks totally different and push the time racking up points between parks to the limit.

I really enjoy watching this run! Aside from shredding the parks, you killed it out on the street. Really fun to watch!
Thanks! I admit that sometimes when I'm playing for medal score I'm lazy and just do enough to get the tickets you need to hit all the parks. It feels a bit odd, because I had never done that as a kid.
I used to love that game when it was in the arcades in the 80s. Got the best workout from any arcade game with all the spinning you have to do.
Yup. Not quite DDR, but I definitely get my heart rate up.
Awesome gameplay! My friends and I lost a fortune in quarters to this game in the 80's!

One of my favorites games 🎮 That was awesome!
You must be like Tony Hawk, mate! Everyone from Down Under, we love you.
Nice job! All gold metals, all the way! Congratulations!
Wow this game is cool af!
I was never any good at it to get this kind of impression
I sold my arcade cabinet about 12 years ago and regret it weekly. Well played.
If you sold your 720, what are they going to bury you in? Seriously though, I hope I never have to part with mine.
Also, you have mad skills. Mad respect.
My god! It’s been so long! I forgot about this game! Definitely a cowabunga run for sure! 😬

This was super rad! I can’t even get all the medals of any tier,, I can get like half or so lmao, it’s really hard. Congratulations for conquering it!
What an EPIC run! Nice job.
I remember back in the day, when you got to a certain point in the game, the ramp was your best chance at getting the points for 1 more ticket.

now this is an epic gamer moment
It does feel pretty great to pull off a perfect medal run. (and tiring, sadly tiring.) If you say epic, I'll take it. But you said it, not me.
Did this ever come out on a Console?
Atari should have released this on Jaguar. Might have been iconic!!
I’m so terrible at it but you have quite the experience 👍
