    I've been asked a lot how to double cup method, so here it is! I use this for all my indoor pepper starts and pepper seedlings! When you grow indoors, this is a great way to get everything moving along nicely.

      Double cups work really well! The only time I have disliked them is when I had like 60 plants in them that were ready for transplanting. I was watering them for about an hour a day!

    0:37 even though they should be air pruned they don’t appear to be, possibly because they were under water and protected from the air, they actually look root bound and needed to be transplanted either into a bigger pot or into the garden quite some time ago.

    Great video, Brandon. Could the top cups be moved to a tote partially filled with nutrient solution so that you only had to water the tote instead of several cups every day? Just wondering. Thanks for the great information!

    • @bohydrus7108
      @bohydrus7108 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do that, but until all of them have roots in the water, you still got to check them individually or they will dry out. If your reservoir holds more than a half inch of water you will need a air stone probably. Fresh water daily is the reason this works so well.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      diHip Support Normally I would be! I want to keep these plants this size though. I’m hoping they don’t get any bigger. The roots are already jam packed in there, so I’m going to keep a close eye on the plant. If it starts to have any issues I will upsize it! I’ve noticed with the plants that I top and trim, I don’t really have this issue. It’s only been with the plants that I just let them go.

      No need for the wet paper towel! I've honestly never used the wet paper towel at all. I just put them directly into the soil and keep it moist!

      @@WhitepepperFarmshomestead I find wet paper towel very useful if you're too busy during the week/away from home/forget to water them. It's pretty much my go-to method this summer. I use one of the circular sweetie/candy containers to store them and stack them on top of each other in zip lock bags and do a Wednesday/Saturday check. As long as you don't completely forget about them then they're fairly resilient and most will root like crazy, my current record since I started this way is a 5 inch long tap root on a lil 420 seed. Presently I've got about 50+ tomato and chilli seeds in 1 container at the moment, saves space and eliminates the non-viables.

    I have a question. I am wanting to do the double cup method also. The cup you are using has the #6 recycle logo which contains Styrene and if heated can can be leached into the soil and harmful to health and can cause carcinogenic effects. I was wondering if the grow lights will generate enough heat to do that. I don't think it's enough to doing any harm. I purchased the same cups and also I purchased some Walmart brand they were clear but I don't think that matters and they had #5 on the recycle which is fine. Just throwing it out there because I am curious to which one I should use. Any way great video and thanks for doing it as I am trying to learn.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say at the cup level, my temps don’t reach above 90 Fahrenheit. I’m not sure what they would need to be to cause harm, but that’s about where I sit!

    • @clemarr
      @clemarr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhitepepperFarmshomestead Not sure where the temperate would need to be to cause the issue either. I don't think 90 degrees would cause any problems. I going to use them because I really like the idea. Thanks for the reply and the videos.

    If in the end you have to cut the plant out, I would think that using a Styrofoam cup as the inner layer would be best to use cuz it'll come apart easier. What do others think?

    • @eastcoast4233
      @eastcoast4233 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That plant was left in the cup too long, so it’s not really a case of making it easier to cut out, surely better to not let it get so root bound in the first place?

    How do I know how much of the hydroponic nutrients to use? And when do I start that?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The back of the bottles of nutrients will give you the mixing ratios! Water the soil up on top until you see roots coming through the bottom, once the roots come through the holes in the bottom you are good to start using the hydroponic nutrients. This is how I do it, at least!

    I tried this same method. I was adding same hydroponic nutrients that you use and plants were doing great and then in no time at all, all my plants got fertilizer burned. What do you think could have happened?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a few different things, but let’s figure it out! How big are your plants? How long were they in the cups? Was it a new batch of nutrients, or from the same bucket or jug that was previously working? Do you let it completely dry out between watering? Definitely let me know and we can work on helping you out!

    • @darrenbukaske417
      @darrenbukaske417 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My plants were about 4 inches tall and the last batch I mixed was a new batch. The only thing I can figure I may have done wrong was when they got about 2 inches tall, I added more pebbles l, about 10 to the top and continued with bottom feeding of the nutrients. Perhaps too much fertilizer? Also when I stared mixing my nutrients I was not adding the cal mag first. I would add it last.

    • @darrenbukaske417
      @darrenbukaske417 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were in the cups for about 2-3 months. Growing medium was jiffy organic seed starter mix also

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t see it being a soil issue, and I don’t think it was the pebbles either unless something was spilled on them or they were exposed to something. My guess is that new batch. I’ve done it before where I added too much of something, or I messed something up and threw it off. If you had just mixed a new batch, I would look at that. Potentially a strong mix! I don’t think it would be the order you mixed things either. Worst case with that is some nutrients would get locked up but it wouldn’t harm your plant. I would go through and look at your measurements really carefully. Are the plants dead now or just struggling? If they aren’t dead, maybe try a half dose mixture for them for a week or two!

  • @pauljackson1291
    @pauljackson1291 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When do you remove the ziplock bag?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As soon as the seedlings come through the soil! If the cup has multiple seedlings I will wait until they all sprout before removing. When I remove the bag I do it in a process. I slowly introduce more air over a period of about 2 days. I first bust open the bag, and then I pull the bag partially over the top of the cup (so half of the cup is open to the air), and then I finally pull the bag off. Sometimes if you rip the bag off those seedlings can get stressed from the sudden humidity change!
