  • It's now 8 weeks since I started the first set of pepper seeds and am officially done starting peppers. In this video I show how I repot the 8 week olds into double Solo Cups where they will remain until they get transplanted outside in May.

    I liked how you broke the soil out of the roots before replanting, I learned something, thanks, I have been trying to keep my roots packed tight when transplanting, but I have still been lucky because everything survived, I am obsessed with pepper plants and tomatoes

      glad you learned something. it's important especially if the roots are compact. They won't grow out properly if they are too tightly wound up.

    I bought two 50 cup sleeves of those red solo cups and both only had 49 cups in them. I was so perturbed I contacted them and they never responded. Can you imagine how much they are cutting I costs by shorting every package by one cup? 😂

      At first I'm thinkin' "No big deal?" But big picture- It pisses me off. And that is how they screw us. Not enough to send you raging, just enough to get them out the door before you even notice. Maybe that's why they are called Solo, because they have sunk Solo.

      @@gapey The stacked cups, is it just useful as water container or does it have another reason I don't get here ? Am growing peppers since 6 years now. I once grew thirty of them, but couldn't manage them well once planted in the garden with moths digging holes in fruits plus water shortages during hot summers. Now since 3 years I'm just growing 9 plants I groom as well I can and I prick in large pots for the season. Am surprised to see so much varieties of peppers though !

      @@MrWookie21 It's also to hold the roots that come out the bottom. I have some videos that show a massive amount of roots in the bottom of the cup by the time I transplant them in the garden. it keeps them from getting root bound in the cup.

      @@gapey Oh yes good find. Since I transplant peppers in bigger containers now @ 4 to 6 inches tall ; it's not a problem anymore. But this could be useful for celeries or celeriacs, don't know yet because I'm still testing the best sowing period for those plants ; especially celeriacs on which I'am making sowing date & ferilizers tests this year. Thank you for the tip !

    Interesting and well-explained video. Thank you for posting.
    I've been growing many of by veggies from seed for quite a while now. Each year I try to do something different whether it's using different germination and potting mediums and/or transplanting at different stages in a seedlings life. Of course, I've had many failures but this season I discovered something that works well for me.
    I've always started my seeds in various types of germination mixes, including pure vermiculite (which works well). I always waited to transplant my seedlings until the first true set of leaves appear. But this year I decided to try some transplants before the appearance of the first set of true leaves (tomatoes, peppers and lettuce). To my surprise, these transplants have done incredibly well and I haven't had a single failure among my 12 transplants.
    Just thought I'd share that with you. Cheers.

    I started some different sweet peppers on 3-13 and today 4-10 I had to pot them up already due to the leaves beginning to yellow, dry, and curl. I have either been giving them too much fertilizer, too much water, or a combo of both. I have a fan in my grow area so they dried out every 3 days or so and I was watering them when they dried. I had some tomatoes that got leggy and put them into solo cups with a lightly fertilized mix and they responded very well so I'm hoping the peppers will do the same. I did it a bit differently though. I don't have a lot of space to grow and so I need to make every inch count. I decided to put 2 pepper plants per cup/hole. I'm leery that this will work so the plan is if they start struggling, I'll just cut one out. If they do well, then good. I'm growing california wonder peppers, grand bell mixed peppers, sweet banana peppers, and mini sweet/mini bell peppers.

    @2:45 you talk about the Jiffy mix compared to the other one. Jiffy is made by "Plantation Products". They are the mass producer of the gardening industry. You can go to Dollar tree and buy small bags of seed starting mix and it too is made by "Plantation Products", but it is branded differently. Id be willing to bet it is the same stuff, just placed into different bags and shipped to different stores. You can go to their website and see all the brands they produce. Id bet it's all the same seed starting mix.

    • @gapey
      @gapey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wouldn't surprise me if the same stuff is sold under different brands. I don't think I've seen seed starting mix at a Dollar Tree before. It's easy to check the ingredients of them and see how they compare. The other stuff I used besides Jiffy has tons of ingredients that you wouldn't find in most potting mixes and seed starting mix. Spiked Soil is the brand name and it's labeled as a potting mix not a seed starting mix but doesn't contain as much nutrients as some other potting mixes as they also sell a fertilizer that they recommend adding to the mix.

    • @TGSureal
      @TGSureal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gapey The mix from DT is sold under the "American seed" brand in small 1.5 Dry Quart bags. Distributed by Plantation Products. The ingredients list: Sphagnum peat, horticultural vermiculite, perlite, and wetting agent. In the next few weeks I'm going to get a bag of the Jiffy seed starting mix and compare it to the DT seed starting mix and I'll check back.

    i suspect some of my super-hots are stunted from cold. do you only use a heating pad or is your ambient temperature also pretty warm (70f+)?

    • @gapey
      @gapey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ambient room temp is 60-62. I have a heat mat only on the peppers set to low 70s.

    • @bo_392
      @bo_392 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my room temps are about the same.
      interesting that a warm soil temp may be more important than the air temp, even beyond just germination. (for certain varieties)

    why the second cup? Isn't the one enough?

    • @gapey
      @gapey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The top cup has holes in the bottom for the roots to come out and the bottom cup has no holes. I put a rock in the bottom cup to elevate it and add water/fertilizer in the bottom cup and the roots come out of the top cup and drink up the water/nutrients. The roots get quite long and it allows them room to grow without them getting rootbound. If there's no bottom cup the roots will just wind around inside the cup and run out of room to grow.
