    Good points.. people often confuse “small batch” and “personalized” products for “custom” work. It is annoying when you approach a “custom” shop in any field of work and they don’t really do custom but rather just options from a pre selected list.

    I just start to transform my hobby in a bussiness , i do custom items , but what i plan to do , is to batch produce what sells , and what is unique would be made by tooling , drawings , stuff that is hard to replicate , this is my solution , but you got a point that we should have a good etic in the industry , but ..most don't

      Now if you sell premade batches as custom. That’s where it doesn’t make any sense. That’s like buying a tv from Walmart and it’s labeled as custom lol

    I’m just starting out in the world of leather crafting. Trying to decide what I want to focus mainly on making for in stock ready to ship items. I am currently doing a 1 of 1 sewing project to get people interested and showcase my skills. I have been doing customization of existing products within my Community which is for people with disabilities community. Someone says I need this adapted to fit my lifestyle (they already own said item it’s well used and needs repair and/or modifications) such as I have limited hand function and need loops to open and close! Can you do it? I need to take measurements of where it needs to go, that means I met the customer directly and go from there. Right now I am hand stitching webbing and other materials including practice on saddle stitching leather. Every now and then I pierce my thread. 🤦‍♂️
    I noticed the custom terms aren’t really custom, if you’ll have my product ready to be sent out in a few hours, days or weeks depending on how complicated the item is. I have to question as a customer if it’s really custom. I have ordered custom guns and they take months to years to build. A custom leather belt that ships tomorrow is an in stock belt with a custom price. Maybe that’s what the whole thing is, it’s in stock with the “custom price”! Just like some products that claim to be made in the USA because it has a sticker that says it is, but some where else on the product it is etched made in china. The only thing that’s made in the USA was that sticker. It’s deceptive to say I made this custom when it’s generic.

    All fair points brother. I have a modest little Etsy store where I sell run of the mill stuff, I offer names on my items but certainly do not class this as customer pieces, it's personalised and nothing more. I do make custom pieces and when I do, it's for the person that commissioned it, I won\t sell another to anyone else and any patterns etc as far as I concerned , belong to that customer. The market is way over saturated, more so with the cheap knockoff stuff from China. Keep fighting the good fight man. Be safe, Chris

    I got no dog in this fight, but I don't know who died and made you the guy deciding what qualifies as "custom". No, someone embossing a belt, that's not custom IMO either. I don't care if someone tools off a pattern, no two will be identical. I don't care if someone builds off a pattern. Doesn't make it any less custom if you make one how a customer wants it. Your opinions are jaded, and you only think someone makes custom items, UNLESS they do what YOU do. Sorry, you don't get to define what custom is, or what it's worth. The buyer does.
    You can disagree with my opinion all you want. Your opinion has no more value then mine. But there is one thing I can tell you..... You will never grow your business or expand your buyer base, criticizing and belittling competitors.

      Hate to break it to you, some of us actually own and run businesses too. Again, I'll point out the BUYER decides what is custom and what isn't. Since you don't get every customer or even most of them, you are only talking to yourself. Like it or not, other people are making money doing this. You aren't educating anyone, you are complaining about people eating your lunch. That's what this seems all about.

    I follow you on IG and just now found your your tube. I love the vibes, I love the music and most importantly the work you put out. Youve got your own style that shoes through thats unmistakable and thats the mark of an artist brother.
    All that being aaid I dont agree with most of your points on this video. Maybe with the exception of not pre building peices and calling them custom. I could probably get on board with you with that one.
    Custom cars are cars that were produced on a mass scale and then later "customized" for a customer that ordered it. If i were to order a bag or a wallet from you and you used a pre made mass produced template and then put your bad ass carving and art work on it per my input on what i wanted on it, i cant consider that not custom. As far as mass produced belts with two i initials? Selling them at a price that would make you think they were unique and made to order? I can see that too. But my takeaway is that there are different levels of quality and attention to detail in the custom world just like everywhere else and the fact tgat youre operating on a different level than many others doesnt discredit what theyre putting out. In my opinion withe full respect of course.

    I hear what you're saying about the product drops not being custom. The belt with somebody's name is technically "customized" but reminds me of people saying they have a custom car because it has some bolt ons. I'm just wanna try and guess the person who you were referring to. Does his name rhyme with blow?..lol
    I think the work I see you creating is classified more as "one off, custom." So far, the work I have done could also be deemed that.
    Haters gonna hate, but I get it, brother. There's nothing wrong with venting your opinion about peeves in your industry. It is good content and info.👍🏻

    • @themaninblackleatherstudio
      @themaninblackleatherstudio  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks brother! No, his name doesn’t rhyme with that. Lol but I’m sure whoever you’re talking about is guilty too LMAO.
      You know, custom is custom. It shouldn’t need to be classified as one off custom. -inherently custom is one off no need to say that other than to classify things the correct way in the first place, you know?
      That third type shop I talked about the worst part is that technically yes they are “custom “ but they are playing on peoples lack of knowledge and that’s what makes it. The worst part is, even if you wanted to call him out, technically in the court of law you would lose.
      It’s just like saying something is “high-quality “ that’s subjective. You can label the biggest pile of dog shit as “high-quality “because there is no standardized, objective truth.
      That’s why I say that last type is the most evil because although they might be true in their statements, or claims the amount to which somebody actually follows that down to truth is all depending on a persons integrity, so you have to intentionally go out of your way to catch customers on a technicality
      kind of shitty

      @@themaninblackleatherstudio. The philosophy degree reminds me that the friends I’ve had who had philosophy degrees (both from UT) had two things in common…a bitterness that I doubt will ever be cured which comes from realizing that they spent THAT much money on a philosophy degree…and an insatiable appetite for debate…or a willingness to argue any issue with any person who could put up a good fight, even if it means making an argument they don’t believe in. But I’m rambling now, I like the industry / rant video format. Good videos of the kind are hard to find, but one cannot sling a dead cat without hitting another friggin video about “how I get my edges so glassy” or “how to make consistent saddle stitches…”. “Which edger should you buy…”. “Watch me make another wallet….with super edgy slow mo’s and models with huge racks…now go sell a kidney, so you can buy my tools”

    People get what they deserve.
    Whether a thoughtful and unique hand crafted item, or a cookie cutter piece of dog sh*t. Everyone makes a choice.
    People won't take a second to educate themselves and make bad decisions as a result. Gnome sayin

    • @themaninblackleatherstudio

      I kind of get it, but not really man. It’s not like we’re talking about normal stuff that’s easy to educate yourself on. People in the industry don’t even know what they’re looking at.

    • @robertfischer5893
      @robertfischer5893 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@themaninblackleatherstudio I think it is that simple. No one has a gun to their head while they're on Etsy spending $400 on credit for a "custom" Tandy belt blank run through a chinese laser engraver. They're getting what they deserve, as f*cked up as it may be.
      Leather is normal stuff. Nearly every single person on the planet owns leatherstuffs, but as far as it being easy to educate yourself about it - half of the people on the planet are below average intelligence.
      E.g. how many millions of Vuitton customers would be shocked to find out their monogrammed bags are made of plastic-coated fabric? How many would even care..? Is LV the bad guy for charging thousands? The information is right on their website.
      The turkish guy in Dallas that cuts designer bags in half is doing a service in trying to break the spell. Seems like he has a good angle - spend time educating people/demystifying the materials/production process and how to "outsmart the industry giants" (by buying his sh*t instead lmao).
