How I Write A Graphic Novel: Script Format // Authortube [CC]

  • I've been meaning to start a series on How I Write Graphic Novels & Comics, so here's my very first entry! Today's episode focuses on script format, but specifically from a writer's perspective. Sadly, I can't even draw a proper stick figure bit, lol, so my approach is better suited for newbie comic writers, or published authors wishing to venture into comics. Let me know in the comments if there's anything you'd like to see in this series!

    Began turning my screen play into a graphic novel recently, and this was very helpful for the transition between styles. THANK YOU!!

      @emmanuelespino2896 I too am trying to turn my screenplays into graphic novels. I’ve already produced my screenplays into films but I would love to get into graphic novel/comic book writing and I believe starting with my screenplays is a good idea.

    Really cool to see a script format/template from a writer's POV since that information rarely gets covered in most of the craft/structure educational materials I've come across. It's so key in collaboration to work in a format that someone who isn't a writer can understand. Loved Puerto Rico Strong, btw.

      Thank you so much for reading PR Strong!! I had no idea this part of the craft rarely got discussed from a writer's POV until I started searching for videos. I hope to add more to the current offerings from that perspective soon!

    For some reason, I could never visualize how to write the script, but this was soooo helpful!!!! Thank you :D

    Great breakdown! I have been enjoying Superscript for scripting comics, it has quick keys for Pages, Panels, and Dialogue. It makes formatting a breeze so you can focus on the script!

    I’m writing a script for a graphic novel, and at first I just wrote paragraphs of dialogue and nothing else like “Zina: blahblabloohboba.” I later gave up because I was so out of motivation, and my script was a mess. After this video, I actually have more motivation and now know how to write the script! Thank you for this amazing video :)

    I already have my story I wrote years ago. Want to develop it more though as I wrote it and finished in two weeks (at least the genesis of it) years ago. I’ve since been building the universe a little more and I found the script but wanted to turn it into a graphic novel and didn’t have a know how of how to format it.
    Thank you for your videos.

    So happy to find another Puerto RIcan comics creator!! I'm close to graduating in a degree in sequential art, and I'm trying to learn what I can to write my own stories (I do a lot of drawing, but writing? Not as much as I should.)

    Thanks for your video. I guess I am dense. Please explain how you would format a script if you are also t the illustrator. Would a literary agent accept less details on a scene's environment or a character's facial expression, if these things are illustrated??

    • @amparoortiz2234
      @amparoortiz2234  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for watching the video! I always recommend checking each agent's submission guidelines before querying, but as I understand it, illustrators don't submit scripts like the ones I write--they submit sample pages of their actual illustrations/panels. As for what's acceptable in the illustrations themselves, I suggest sticking with what's important to show in a specific scene (agents won't be looking at details in the way your question is framed!). Be sure to research as much as possible and keep creating!

    Thanks for the tips! Very interesting how similar it is to writing scripts for film or tv, despite the technical differences, the same writing principals apply. I suppose instead of time/duration, I need to think in “pages”
