Hahaha thx for the info! I really have hard time writing short stories and I anxiety/over think the "will ppl like it? Can I get the right publisher" just all the onknowns. But I kinda sat down and I now I have more or less 4 short or side panel comics? Yah like I don't quite know myself. The main one I'm playing with write now is like a Breath of the wild story arc, a what if plot line to the game, umm I like it so far. My main problem is I focused to much on detail or events that don't particularly need to be in there or I rewrite the them before I even get that far into them or even I get over whelmed by the massive quantity I want to convey or cover.
Any how, a slight rant, that aside I love my characters, I love drawing, animating ect; and I think u are really inspiring and good.

Some of my biggest struggles, can anyone relate?
    1. Not having any idea of what I want to to, like I want to make a comic but what is it about
    2. Not thinking i can create something as good as it is in my head
    3. Getting to attach to the idea of my story and not wanting to mess it up by actually writing it
    4. Feeling like it will take too much time, and not even be any good, so why bother.
    Edit:
    5. The story changes like I have one idea but it would work in the story so I have to use it in another one ( basically there are a million possibilities for a story so it’s hard to pick just one)
    6. My art is not where I want it to be. I’m ok but I really want to be in a place where I am confident I could draw like Dina (for example not comparison)
    7. I can draw something for my head I’m super creative until I sit down to draw must likely because of #6 and I don’t think my idea can translate to paper in the way I want
    8. Practice can sometimes feel like a chore and just make me sad I’m an as good as I want to be so leaning becomes frustrating
Thanks for all the replies they are so fun to read!

Chances are, if this is your first time making something like a comic it will not be very good. That said, how will you ever make something that you ARE proud of and that you do think is good? You have to start somewhere. The most important thing to remember is to start small. Maybe just start by creating a simple character, redraw it a ton and create a back story for it. Where does it live, who are its friends and enemies, what makes them special? Start with a small building block and grow from there.

I've been a struggling artist my entire life. I'm an "artist" by trade and it can be crushingly difficult to continue moving forward sometimes when your own abilities fail you. The passion to create keeps me going though, there will always be another project to do better on.

Hey Dina (Lovely person) as someone who is a very close follower of you and has followed this journey (and many others) from the start, I feel like this is the best summary you could have written! It lists off many great tips, things you've chosen and directions you've maken and with you being so honest and upfront about this whole entire project is completely amazing! It's a perfect step up for young/new creators to get some great tips and Get a new start into creating stories! Thank you so much for this and I know that this journey is not yet complete but it will almost be! Let's say goodbye to Syv and Kit, with happy tears and a graceful nod and head to new horizons (both for an animal crossing break and metaphorically) and work on new things! this video could not have came at a better time for me. i'm planning on starting my first illustrated novel very soon (for camp nanowrimo if you know what that is) and i've been struggling with how to do a few things. i was a writer before i became comfortable in my artist label so i feel very good about my story, but the art part is foreign to me. i've never combined writing and art in a story so i'm very excited.
and congrats on finishing the project! that's the best feeling ever :D

I'm not even finished with the video but this has been really helpful! I've been playing with plot, character designs, and lore for a story of my own, but it would be a very large ongoing thing. Your video has made me realise that the reason I'm taking so many breaks with it and taking so long to really get rolling on the project is because of just how big it is. It seems obvious now, but working on little, self-contained stories in the world might be more immediately rewarding and motivating and something I'm excited about!

Hi, thank you so much for all this advice! I’m working on a pretty big graphic novel and it’s been a work in progress for ages the story keeps changing but I’m finally feeling like it’s coming together… I’m at about 200 pages atm (all in rough thumbnail form) and I’m just finishing off linking parts together as I haven’t been working chronologically. Piecing together everything is a huge struggle but it’s getting there! My biggest worry is the finalizing… there’s so many pages I need to add detail to, the environments especially are going to take forever 😅 It’s refreshing to see someone with a finished book after putting in so much effort. The grind is a huge struggle but still so worth it ^^

Thank you for making this video! It is very helpful to me to see the process of people telling storyes and working on big projects.
I have so many ideas for large projects that I want to do someday. The problem is whenever I try to think of a small project I get too attached to it and keep expanding it in my mind till it is no longer a small starter project.
I like the idea of doing illustrations for poems or fairytales, that is something I will have to try.

Congratulations on finishing this big project! I received the book recently in France and read it right away haha
I really enjoyed the artwork in it. The book is of very good quality! For some reason though I expected the characters to have more depth and I think it lacks adventures in the middle (idk how to say it). I think this is because I thought it would be more mature when the project was a children book at the beginning. So yeah this is just me having probably wrong expectations and I'm not questioning the quality of the book itself! It's a one shot, it was a tremendous work and I'm so happy to have supported you! I will for sure reread it later on to enjoy the story and art more. I'm truly looking forward your next project and follow you along in your journey!

I’m 17 (almost 18) and I currently have this huge story I’m trying to work on, its one I’ve imagined for a couple years, it has like 3 chapters/books, its kinda tricky to work on, I plan to make it a comic series. It’s very fun to work on and figure things out! I just struggle trying to figure out where to start on storyline. Luckily i have like 4 or 5 stories i wanna make so if i get bored of figuring out 1 i can go to the next.

Dina I am striving to become a professional artist and author, I want to illustrate my own stories and bring them to life as I share my ideas with the world. I love creating fantasy/fairy tales and backstories and my stories and ideas and art style are very similar to yours! I feel like I will never ever live up to your amazing ideas, and like you have just scooped all the amazing ideas out of my brain, and I have spurts of inspo and then I dont. I have trouble forming shorter stories, but you inspire me to master my story writing. You are my biggest inspiration and so I am just here to say thank you so so much

I got dragged in a project with a group of people, at the beginning I'd only have the few background scenes, long story short, it's a mess, we didn't have story or concept or organization or anything more than a theme and some random characters, now I'm carrying all this development in my back, so I'm really thankful for this video

Dina, you're a fairy! You just said everything that I needed to hear right now, and it's so conforting to know that I was doing it the right way all along! Somehow, seeing your book finished is like to see my own comic in my hands. :') However, I still not knowing how to do this gigantic webcomic I have in mind. Guess I'll just plan everything and go along the most chill way as possible, knowing that the important is the result and not every single piece of illustration :>

From one author-illustrator to another, this is great! Really good to hear your perspective and personal experience. My way of working is different and may be helpful so just dropping it in comments! :) Everyone is different! I have the ideas then write them out completely in a manuscript format, especially for graphic novels and even for my picture books. For me, this comes more naturally and imo, story is king! Sometimes the stories stem from characters I've drawn and thought hey they look like they have a story, and then a whole world develops around them. Sometimes I create my characters after the story idea or title that sounds cool pops up hah. But I think writing it all down, even though not in order, then sorting through it before thumbnailing about 10 pages to draw into full colour illustrations is the way to go (for me) and a great way to prepare a graphic novel pitch package if you are not self-publishing (like me, I thought about it but I want to traditionally publish so I'm making sure all my PB and GN ideas are super neat and ready to go out to an agency I want to represent me and get my books on the market!)

Ah!! I’ve read The Girl who Drank The Moon! I totally agree with you about the former being narrated like a ghibi movie. I believe she did an amazing job when transitioning from character to character, and I’m very picky about narration! I’m going to have to check out your first recommendation, I’m a sucker for all things fantasy.
