Phenomenal story! In reality, it was a game that she shouldn't have WANTED to win. If she had left the box alone at the end, she really would have won, in a sense. She wanted to take a shortcut in order to remove her fear. That usually doesn't work in the real world and it sure didn't work here, either. Insanely creepy ending. It was perfect! Plus, the house setting is gorgeous, too. And the dark background music, along with the spots of suspense when there is no music at all, make for the best kind of fear film. I loved every second of this short horror film. I'm looking forward to watching more from you!

I actually disagree! She had a phobia, a true one, and I believe the box could have cured her of that. I don't believe it to be cheating, because she WAS working on herself - or trying to - that's why she got the chance to use it at all. Problem with mystical objects is they don't give a toss WHY you broke 'The Rules,' you just did. Her fate was sealed when she did, and she brought it literally on herself with every move after the initial rule break.

Just loved when "Eyes Without a Face" started playing; the song was inspired by the 60's French horror film "Les Yeux Sans Visage" - literally, eyes without a face. Good tie-in all around.
Love that movie. Didn't realized it was inspired from that movie, very cool!
The difference is that, Billy Idol sang the song more as an ode - via "dope poetry", regarding his own heroin addiction. And Idol's now ex-wife, who sang in the song's background "les yeux sans visage" ("eyes without a face"): she was also a dancer, who would perform with the great, late STeve STrange and his leading "New Romanic" group, *VISAGE.* Befitting.

This is Perfect. Nice storyline, nice effect and the actress played her role very well.
On the side note, just a piece of advice. If your job is to pet sit a cat, just fucking pet sit a cat and don't do anything rather than that, it will save you from a lot of trouble.

I can see that too. Sort of like the wardrobe from Harry Potter but creepier because the people who get it don't know what it is. That box belongs in Ed and Lorraine Warren's safe room.
This was amazing, especially for a grown up who's plagued by her fear of the dark in real life. Excellent!!! Would also like to see more of the “Face your Fears” box like Laura Rhodes said.

At first I thought she became one of those cards and every card is a trapped soul who was sucked into the box.
Your best work. Feels like a well written short story horror fable brought to life. I don’t even know what to say, this is really just top notch filmmaking and I really hope we see a feature from you someday soon. Well done to your cast and crew as well!

I thought two hands were gonna pull her in. This was pretty good.
If I understand the hidden meaning beyond this from a mystical perspective, if she had actually completed the third sentence, she would have completely died. As it says, "there are no shortcuts". The very urge of her playing the game is a sign she is looking for a shortcut.
And now.......she will live her remaining life in “darkness”......her worst fear, no longer diminished by the simple flick of a light switch, became permanent.
This was really good. It brings in all the classic horror tricks; startled cat, darkness, unexplained noises and a scared young girl. Any additional characters would spoil it. Really good.

I actually really loved this, and I'm a jaded horror fan so used to disappointment. Kudos. You didn't fail to take it far enough, you didn't go too far, didn't make the classic mistakes of showing the elephant or losing the psychological element or resorting to cheap jumpscares... your story made internal sense and was so much more satisfying than simple blood or death.
The final song was truly the cherry on top, too. I started laughing after the first few notes because I recognized it immediately. What a clever joke and perfect chaser.

I wish I could give you a standing ovation. As a horror junkie who has seen just about every horror flick that comes out this scratches that itch perfectly. I actually got shivers.
A simple Grimm style fable almost set with a dash of Goosebumps books and a clean storyline with a relatable character that made 15 minutes feel like a satisfying full film. I love it.

This film is absolutely amazing. The cinematography was just beautiful too. That house the Victorian and antique vibe I love. Great work and hope to see more such as this. The actress was great too ✨

That was amazing. I love Horror Shorts more than movies because alot of horror movies is just filler anyway. These get right to the point. We dont need her whole back story and watching her go to dinner and 10 minutes of driving. They just cut to the chase and give you the meat of the story which is all we want anyway.

My interpretation of this is that because she didn’t finish the game she doesn’t get the cure that was promised…instead, by forcing the box open and “cheating” she loses her eyes and is now cursed with being in the dark forever
Great job. I’m extra glad you didn’t really show the entity in full. I find leaving up to the viewers imagination can be more disconcerting.

Loved this. Two of my favorite parts from this is probably the way it displayed how the woman was afraid of the dark and saw things in it that weren't there and the ending that the box took the woman's eyes as a punishment, so now the woman is forced to forever see nothing but darkness and live in fear forever. The punishment that was given was pretty dark (pun intended) but also seemed fitting for the situation/phobia. One thing I would like to ask is if you guys are gonna make another one of these videos but have the player win? I just would like to see what exactly happens when someone successfully completes the box's challenge.
If the movies on Netflix and Hulu were even half this good, at home viewing would be light years better. Congrats on a very well-done film.

..but after watching I was pleasantly surprised. Extremely good job & "Eyes without a face" in the closing was an inspired touch.
I really liked the environment, the score, the story and the way it was shot. My only critique would have been to remove the 1st instance of the "being" that she clearly sees from her car and to make the 2nd instance (top of stairs) much more subtle.
The 1st instance would have caused any normal person to drive off. The 2nd would do the same, especially after seeing it the first time.
The fact that she saw it 2 times and then still decided that it would be a good idea to play with a creepy a** jack in the box, makes it hard to believe. For me, it removes me from the experience.
Hey Mr. E-Your comments make total sense. Why the hell would she get out of the car?
Here’s why: Neil and I had many conversations about story and back story, which (un)fortunately did not make it into the short, because let’s face it, all we really want to see is everything go wrong.
As you know, Alyssa lives with a debilitating fear of the dark that has made her world really small and limited to an existence in the light. Her world is constructed around avoiding her fear, which is synonymous with the entity. That means no dinners out, date nights at the movies, sleep overs-you get the point. Kind of like living Rona2020. 😟 Her world is built around coping with her fear.
Imagine what that would be like? We all have fear, some big/small. They can be crippling or just an inconvenience. Me: I am afraid of snakes, which I only encounter on a hike or at Petco. So, I avoid THAT aisle and hikes in temps above 70 degrees. Fear evaded. But Alyssa’s fear of the dark, which REALLY is a fear of the ENTITY that has been haunting her for years, is not as easily avoided. Every time she walks into a dark space, turns off a light, or dusk turns to night, she sees that entity. Which would be everyday, if not for her carefully constructed life.
So when we meet Alyssa, she is at her breaking point and ready to FACE HER FEAR. Which spurs her to take a cat sitting job at 10pm, propels her out of the car, into the house, searching for help from a self-help book, and ultimately, trying her luck at silly game. Her fear wins. But her desperation continues to push her forward.
It’s just a silly box, right? F%€# this box. F%€# this fear. F%€# all of it. She wants out of this nightmare by whatever means possible. The answer is in a stupid box? Fine. What have I got to lose? F%€# the rules of this stupid F%€#ing game. Her desperation propels her forward. So she forces her way in, but once inside, what does she find, Mr. E? A darkness greater than any darkness that she’s confronted in her tiny world. And it sucks in, first the sun, then her.
It’s interesting as hell. Think about it. Neil’s a genius.
There’s so much to learn from here. 😉

This is just outstanding imo. I absolutely love how whenever she sees something in the dark it leaves the frame in a different way, like how at first her windshield wiper moved it away and then turning the lights on did the trick. Just awesome stuff!

I'd like to see a horror story where the protagonist makes a series of very well-thought-out and not-at-all stupid decisions, and then gets eaten by a monster (or goes home and has a nice, light dinner before bed, then goes in to work the next morning).
It’s intense, scary, 👍👍
But it would have gave it something that’s rare in horror shorts. She completes the tasks and LIVES

Beautifully put together from beginning to end. The film kept you engaged to see what is next but scared to watch. Great acting, lighting, editing, scripting, sound effects, and scenery. Would love to see what you could do with a full length film. Best short horror genre film I have seen in a long time.
This might sound like a stupid question but what would've happened if she won the game? Seeing as it seemed to be manifesting a monster and carried such risk I was just curious if passing the test meant your fear just disappeared or if it gave you more as well, like a reward for literally risking so much and facing your fear incarnate (like the creature representing your fear becoming your servant rather than tormenting you, to represent gaining mastery over your fear, or something else that's interesting like that). Also would anything bad have happened to her had she not forced the box open or was something bad inevitably going to happen for failing the test, like that thing stalking her for the rest of her life? Loved the short film BTW

I'd say if she had won, she would have overcome her fear. If she had not forced the box, she would have stayed fearful, like she was, but that's it.
If she had won she would have overcome her fear of darkness. And opened the box to see nothing. Just a plain ol box. Or even better, it'd just be a mirror that's welded to inside of the box. As she looks at herself in the box, she'd realise the only cure to her own fears, is through herself. It's similar to that of Kung Fu Panda's first movie moral:
*"There is no secret ingredient."*

This film displays a very valuable lesson... When it comes to overcoming trauma, phobias, etc... There truly are no shortcuts, & if you try & shortcut it, you're only shortcutting yourself.

I think she was very brave, and truly wanted to face her fears....pity she was kind of double crossed in the end......I mean, she went further than most would...you'd think she'd get a little credit for that...lol....but no....that box is like a tyrant!
