Surprised you're not using a Peterson SC5000-II strobe tuner which has stretch tuning to make it more versatile across piano types and 7 different temperaments.

What a coincidence, this morning I read an article about Oscar Peterson who felt in love with the Imperial. The German sound engineer Brunner-Schwer sold his Steinway D and bought an Imperial extra for to make a pleasure for him.

For those extra bass lengths one arm length is around the 3rd harmonic rather than the 2nd. Are you sure they should be tuned to the 2nd harmonic and not the 3rd? I find it difficult to believe that these instruments were built requiring two people to tune the bass.

Do you check the temperment to see if anything has shifted?

G0 is an incredible sound! And it is surely heard as G! E0 is heard as E too! Lower sounds are more difficult to hear the base. But it seems, C#0 is a bit lower, then needed.

Thank you for commenting. Yes, one or two of the extra notes could do with fine tuning. I will get that done when I next have someone with me. Fortunately they don't usually move much though. Marcus

I have used many ETD's. Tune labs, piano meter and piatune but have now settled on pianoscope. It has a freeze function so that you can tune to the the attack and tune each string individually and still achieve a perfect unison. You are also able to tune the low notes of a Imperial with it.

Thank you so much for that information. We will take a look at pianoscope. Marcus

@@RobertsPianos I should have mentioned that the freeze function is only on the V2.5 Beta but should be released soon and both this and the ability to set a 97 key piano in the Pro version. It is only on the apple thingy.

I just wondered how to tune the extra bass, a second person to tune is a great expense, perhaps the owner can help out.
A piano technician in Berlin told me that he uses ear protection when he tunes a Steinway. When a piano is too brilliant it is a real stress for our ears when sit in front of it. Many young musicians don't care about it and practice too loudly, drunken by their sound. Unfortunately even under professionals is a lack of understanding for this aspect and produces bad mood when you mention it.

Thank you for your comment. It doesn't need any special skill to stop the string halfway so I usually wait until someone is with me. Marcus

I tune exclusively using ETDs, I've tried the majority, the most accurate for actually tuning pianos is PianoMeter, it also allows you to calibrate it with a microphone to whatever you believe A440 is, if you don't agree with the app (I havent had to do such, but the option is there) It's definitely the best in every category, beats CyberTuner and the like by far
