I recently visited Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon GA. The fact that most of the ABB is buried together there says these guys were more than just popular musicians...
"Then it's rinse and repeat." Haha. The great drummers can play without accompaniment and make you hear the other instruments. Butch Trucks is one of those drummers. RIP Legend. Thanks for the great music.
Him and Jaimoe on drums were like Duane and Dickey on guitar. They complimented each other so well. Butch was the meat & potatoes and Jaimoe was the garnish. They were out-fucking-standing! Not a better tandem drum team in history. ❤️ YOU, BROTHERS!
The Allman Brothers Band was the most unique band of our time! Everyone just clicked perfectly, it must have been such a damn joy to play with such talent...!!! Thank you so damn much, it was some of the first drum stuff I learned on my first drum set, I was blown away then, and still am every time I play to it! Butch you will NEVER be for gotten my brother!!
What a master, totally devoid of ego or BS. "Watch the guitarists" Just look at him during the Filimore East gig - he's on them like a hawk. Love The Allman Band
Seems like a nice, intelligent guy. (I've seen him on another interview also). It's a shame he felt the need to take his own life. I guess you just never know the internal struggles some people are battling.
Butch Trucks drumming style was a combination of blues shuffel, country, jazz and rock which came together with awesome dynamic range and very melodic drumming.Listening to Butch and Jaimoe in the original recordings was so powerful and melodic where you could hear them really driving the lead guitar lines along with Berry oakleys melodic thundering Bass playing lead lines along with Duane and Dicky Betts.Drumming style bobbed and weaved with twin guitar melodies Along with poly rhythic drumming in many of thier instrumentals. Carlos Santanas 1969 band played with the same fire an entire unit just like Duane Allmans orignal unit. Thier live shows went from good, very good, excellent, and then like the fillmore east show Amazing!!!! This amazing fusion of so many musical styles along with Gregg Allmans legendary blues vocal put them in a category that you could easily call as legendary.
Nobody Shuffles like Butch Trucks as he was the freight train of the Allman BrothersBand along with Jazz drummer Jai Johnny Johnson.I have never heard two drummers play so well together like a percussion orchestra. Mark Quiones from Newyork city was a perfect combination almost like A Santana Rhythym section. Jaimoes Jazz playing with Sea leavel was some of his best melodic drumming since Fillmoe East. Butch Trucks Drumming all through his 45 years with Abb was amazing. It is hard to find Drummers these days who play with that kind of Skill and dedication almost like a great heavy weight prize fighter with amazing fire. Like to see the younger generation bring those kind of Chops to live perfromances because Butch Trucks, Jamimoe and Mr Mark Quiones always brought the goods. Awesome live drumming and percussion.True professionals just like Warren Haynes and Derrick Trucks. What else can you say????? The absolute joy of playing music you love for people who love your music..... Thats hittin the note!!!!!!!!!!!!
R.I.P. MR. TRUCKS , YOU WERE ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS TO EVER WALK THE PLANET, NOW YOU ARE WITH YOUR FELLOW BROTHERS, DUANE AND BERRY, HEAVEN HAS A POWER TRIO, YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED, AND NEVER FORGOTTEN, I HOPE THAT THE REST OF THE ALLMAN BROTHERS TAKE A LONG LONG TIME TO JOIN THE THREE OF YOU, MY CONDOLENCES TO THE TRUCK FAMILY, AND ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS, COUSIN FIGEL
Whoa....I had no idea he was so technically efficient. I guess I've just been concentrating on the other guys more, but these two drummers are brilliant!!
Butch, you are so gracious to give your time to us on You Tube. I am a drummer and have been a fan since 1970. I have played Whipping Post a million times over the years. Thank you for showing me how to play it right!
The drums on this track are a lot more complex-sounding than what Butch is demonstrating because of the other simultaneous drummer Jaimoe! My son plays drums on this tune with his band and he's VERY a busy drummer trying to keep it interesting as he's one drummer making up for the sound of two! Thanks Butch, you will be missed.
RIP Butch Trucks - we'll miss your playing. Such a great drummer and one of my favorites from that era. One of my favorites period. Fantastic drummer, and underrated and often overlooked IMO. Just a great drummer with a fantastic groove.
Love the 12/8 with that one short measure in. With two drummers always thought that the stage volume must’ve been horrendous but the energy from two drummers and Betts and all the great guitar players. The Hammond b3 holy crap. ZI grew up in north Alabama in the era of all those groups. We used to just jam for hours in the music shed behind a friend of mines house. That’s what the Allman bros remind me of. There are great pickers all over the south. I played drums ended up getting a music scholarship paid for college. The funny thing is I couldn’t read a lick of music but I had chops for days. I taught myself how to read traditional music and Nashville charts etc still play almost everyday One thing I’ve really come to appreciate Is how good Greg’s vocals were. I’ve listened to Dickey Betts doing his songs which are great classic southern rock. But Greg’s was something different. Great video!!! The last video I saw of Gregg was doing midnight rider with Zach brown, Vince Gill, with Kenny aronoff at the kit. Just great stuff. It’s really weird because my style of drumming is very very similar to Butch’s. I’m not saying that to brag we probably aren’t far apart in age ( I’m 60) I’ve heard Butch passed away but I guarantee he grew up in the south did some jazz in high school listened to everything from Bonham to Perdie. The jamming, listen to other musicians was very familiar.
Man - he is doing so much more on the snare than most drummers do in a whole set...So cool to see someone using ghost notes instead of bashing the hell out of the drums....
This is priceless. I have no talent for playing any instrument but have as good ear and great respect for anyone who has mastered their craft. Have never seen instructional video on how to play drums. Looks very hard. As does guitar. Thank you for this, Butch. You are greatly missed.
Such a GREAT DRUMMER. who as inspired so many Drummers. A sweet guy . I feel so horrible we lost him. He was very very loved. LOVE AND PEACE TO HIS FAMILY
I played this song in bands as a kid and recently added it to a set I'm playing with some friends. Thought I would come here and learn how to play it right. RIP my man, one of my biggest influences when I started as a young drummer in the 70s.
RIP, Butch. You and Jaimo drove the beat for one of the best blues rock bands ever. Still have Whipping Post in the car today. You will be missed, sir!
Thank you Butch. That was great. I've always tried to emulate your left hand which stays busy it seems to me. I really like that jazzy type feel. With you and Jaimo going at the same time it is just mesmerizing. Great drummer, great band. Peace.
I never really appreciated or made notice of just how great of a drummer Butch was, until now. The news of his passing is really hitting me in a big way, and I think I'm just now realizing what I've been missing.
15 thumbs pointing the wrong way? Get out of here. The intensity of the Allman Brothers, whether the original band or the later versions, was never matched. This man was a part of it all.
So good to see Butch demonstrating this groove pattern. I saw him and the band at the Fillmore East when they recorded that famous live album back in the 70s. The drumming sounds a bit like Ginger Baker due to the triplet subdivision.
@@Jallatt Yes it was because they were the last of 3 bands on the bill and jammed for about 3 hours or so, whatever went on that live album, with the show ending at 7am in the morning.
Awesome tune awesome tutorial. It's been years since I've actually played the song but I'll occasionally touch on some of those rhythms when I practice. The video darned brought tears to my eyes. Butch and Jaimoe have long been favorites of mine! Member of that elite group known as the best! Long live and God bless!!!
RIP Butch. What a wonderful guy and what a wonderful drummer - I loved the way he had an almost telepathic understanding with the lead instruments and would go with what they were playing to create new cross-rhythms. One of the best.
Beautiful drumming, love that jazz influence especially the snare , combine that with the twin leads and Jaimos brilliance and you have the perfect band. No wonder Clapton was in awe of them .
The Uncle i never had, born and raised on Allman Brothers Music, if it wasnt everyday i'd hear their music and Butch Trucks along with Jaimo Drumming well then i was sleeping, lol he may not be the best drum instructor here but it was worth watching and listening
My band plays this song fun as hell to play. It jumps all over the place. You have to have a good bass player cause time signatures change so much. Best learn those paradiddles too! lol Most bands I've seen cover this the drummer just plays single notes on the snare. Allman brothers drummers deserve much respect. They kick ass live. If you ever get the chance to see Allman brothers band live GO!!!!!!! I've seen hundreds of bands and they are in my top 5 live. Plus there are plenty of goodies to be found in the parking lot! High recommend 1/2 quarter of shrooms when you see these guys. Peace

Not only drummers...
Not only drummers...
He makes it look easier than it is. I am a bass player and do pay attention to drummers of great talent like Butch.
His and Jaiamoe’s drumming changed rock and roll .period
The one thumbs down deserves to be tied to the whipping post. This is so EPIC. Thank you and respect to you Mr. Butch Trucks.

I got to see him about 8 months before he passed with his band and son,it was a great show,I feel honored to have that ever lasting memory!
