Kevin N I have always felt that playing quarter note hi hi hat grooves are far more challenging than 8th note HH grooves. With more space in between hits its so much more difficult to match the time perfectly and retain all the dynamics when you have so much space.

I just love how this man by the name of Mr. Bernard Purdie just puts his rhythmic and intellectual sense of nostalgia, persuasion, and history into his playing while he is exemplifying it and showing it to every audience he plays in front of. That is the kind of old drummer that you could learn and sociably gather lots of musical knowledge from when you're trying to make it into the bigger leagues; especially when it comes to actually playing drums or the (drumset)

He's telling a story, oh and he happens to be playing drums as well. There are some who don't get his style, or may be bored because he's not flashy, but this dude is the real deal. It's why he is one of the greatest. He's teaching musicality and space in the song. I could sit and listen to this all day. "My friends, always remember where the 1 is."
People have no clue how awesome this guy really is and so much respect from very well known drummers. Pocket and groove, that's where it's at. He makes it look so effortless.
Purdie plays drums like David Gilmour plays the guitar. He don't trip on ego pretense, or hide behind flashy gimmick. He has the confidence to bare his soul and play rhythm with real human emotion.

A great creator of a timeless groove. This groove came into existence when Bernard was recording one day with Aretha and she dropped some music on the ground while Bernard was practicing this groove and apparently Aretha said yes! Yes! And, Bernard played this groove in a unique way on “ Until You Come Back to Me.” Amazing how this groove would be used later on songs like Home At Last with Steely Dan and countless others. This groove is ingenious. Enjoy!

Incredible! Purdie seems to have influenced almost every drummer after him. His feel and timekeeping are incredibe, everything he does is extremely useful in a band context - and he talks at the same time and it's clear that the man loves what he does. Very inspiring!

Well said, Bernard is such a personality and to have performed with ALL the greats in the industry, He is truly a legend.

It's a shame there are those who don't appreciate a diversity of styles. I love the high energy of Carl Palmer, Buddy Rich, Ginger, Cobham etc
But I certainly can appreciate the " in the pocket" groove of this.
It's just a running total of people who don't like gold records. Or at least the good gold records.
Flavor, soul, timing and space to breath. I'm an accomplished drummer. Playing most my life and could watch him do this all day.

A great creator of a timeless groove. This groove came into existence when Bernard was recording one day with Aretha and she dropped some music on the ground while Bernard was practicing this groove and apparently Aretha said yes! Yes! And, Bernard played this groove in a unique way on “ Until You Come Back to Me.” Amazing how this groove would be used later on songs like Home At Last with Steely Dan and countless others. This groove is ingenious. Enjoy!

I love how he explains his playing. it's perfect because if you write what hes doing on a staff, it doesn't look difficult. You'd spend the rest of your life trying to make it sound like him though. There's only one godfather of groove, and that's Bernard Purdie. Great video.

Incredible! Purdie seems to have influenced almost every drummer after him. His feel and timekeeping are incredibe, everything he does is extremely useful in a band context - and he talks at the same time and it's clear that the man loves what he does. Very inspiring!
