      Religions are philosophical constructs on the matter of theism and/or spirituality with following beliefs, tenets and rules.
      (buddhism is a religion, but doesn't worship any gods)
      Ergo, religions are philosophical ideologies.
      Ideologies are collections of ideas within a defined topic.

      I think it's a deeper question than simply leaving behind religious ways of thinking. We evolved this ability to create agents in our minds precisely to survive. I mean, a rustle in the bushes could be the wind or a predator, we evolved to prefer the latter as it improves our chances of survival. When we became self aware it was only a malfunction of this circuitry that drove us to believe there were agents behind everything, including behind the wind, fire, animals and even other humans. We thought there was an agent acting on a body giving it life, a spirit and so on. To really evolve past this, we will have to become purely rational beings, and I don't think there really is an evolutionary benefit to this, so we would have to do it through engineering our own DNA.
      Even in the most secular nations in the world, there are still SOME people that find religion, so clearly we can not leave religion behind by simply trying very hard.

      @@Sanddollar1 So you want to try the "not a real Christian" and "not as religious as me" approach?
      Are you really more religious if you attend a church? And I guess it also has to be the "correct" church?
      And is "the West" values really based on Christian values?
      Do you have slaves? Do you let your women teach men? Do you kill persons having sex with the same gender? Would you slaughter an entire city because a voice in your head said so?
      The West has of course inherented something from Christianity, like the school system, but that does NOT mean we are Christian countries. The best countries to live in according to almost all statistics are NOT where the people are the most religious. USA is one of the most religious countries in the "West" and about 3 % of the population is in prison or on probation.

    • @notatheist
      @notatheist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alētheias - Those prison inmates may or may not have attended church regularly. You know who *DOES* frequent the halls of religion? Priests. Priests, and countless religious leaders and congregants whom have, are, and will continue to use the church as a staging grounds for the most depraved and horrific acts committed by humans.
      You are severely demented if you make excuses for a god that knows of the monstrous acts are occurring, watches every moment, has the ability to stop the act, but decides to stay out of it. The child grows up to hate anything related to religion, removing any possibility of believing in and worshipping a god who favors the acts of monsters within his own walls over protecting an innocent and helpless child. By your beliefs, the child will burn in hell and the priest will likely go to heaven.
      Sick and demented..

    I can't help but get teary eyed knowing there are people out there so dedicated to do good through the means of reason and critical thinking. Coming from a religious family (mexican catholic) and being the only atheist member of it, I do struggle to have a connection with my family on the subjects of religion and humanism which is unfortunate. I wish I could have a solid conversation with my family members without hurting their feelings but I know that's just pie in the sky.

      It will take a very long time before religion, superstition and the supernatural will be pulled out of central and South American cultures. I have noticed that the vast majority (if not all) of “possession” videos come from countries in those regions. It must be awful to suffer from a mental illness in those cultures because they will just claim you are possessed by the devil.

      This is a bit of a weakness of Dawkins. When people try to point out a nuance thats missing from his argument he gets pissed off and starts attacking all philosophers/philosophy in general as if the entire group is just an amorphous blob of haters. I personally think the more engaged parts of philosophy as a subject can be quite useful in this kind of thing. Dillahunty for example is best characterised as a man who payed REALLY CLOSE ATTENTION during epistemology 101. And its the reason hes one of the best around right now.

Feel free to stay stupid but move on. If you ever want to search for truth try it one day and set yourself free from your willful ignorance of reality as prophecfied by Christ before he created you. Any education, home schooled or Harvard graduates, you're all blinded by Satans covers.

Every emotion, the good food you'll eat today and the beds you all sleep in, you mock that and spit in the glorified God who gave you this life. Shame on you. A brief, 5-step summary of my mental journey from attachment (indecisiveness) to indifference (decisiveness):
    Start: 1. I am suffering, because I'm not living up to god's expectations. He isn't happy with me.
    2. I am suffering, because god is not living up to my own expectations. I am not happy with him.
    to 3. Perhaps god & I are passing the burden of our happiness onto each other, therefore none of us will ever be happy.
    4. I don't really know what makes god happy, but I sure as heck know what makes me happy.
    End: 5. Therefore, it's only reasonable that the burden of my happiness should unequivocally rest with me.
    That's when the constant riddle solving came to an end, and so did my indecisions. Now I am more decisive and much happier, and I can only assume with a detached indifference that so is god!

      is a religion because its based on the assumption of faith that 'there is no God' Whether or not you
      participate in sex or not you are still a sexual being. It doesnt change the factors involved in sexuality.
      It doesnt mean SEX DOESNT EXIST. I love how atheists love to think they are SO rational BUT every

      Post-truth is as culture in which debate is framed largely by appeals to emotion disconnected from observable reality, and by the repeated assertion of talking points to which factual rebuttals are ignored.

    • @xebek
      @xebek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      alley boulcrest It appears you copy-pasted that entire assertion, but can you provide any independently verified, falsifiable and peer-reviewed evidence for any of your claims? How have you determined that this being exists? If the bible is an accurate representation of its character, then Dawkins' analysis is spot on. Lastly, does the biblical god have perfect foresight? Did it know how reality would play out at the time of creation? If so, it created satan knowing it would rebel and fall, it would create hell to house satan and his compatriots, it would create man knowing man would fall, it knew it would send man to hell, it knew it would have to flood the world as a reset, which would fail, it knew it would have to sacrifice itself TO itself, which would fail for most people and it knew it would pass on the most important message ever in languages that would die out while giving us the ability to think critically yet base salvation on not using that ability at all. Odd plan. I won't even go into detail about its desire to play favorites with "chosen people" and allowing them to slaughter any infidels (it created those other tribes knowing they would end up slaughtered - and just for that express purpose?), the endorsements for slavery and murder and the idea of infinite torture for finite crimes. Yeah, super duper nice guy, that god appears to be. Also, believe or burn is hardly free will. Besides, he knows the future preemptively, right?

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way, from the bible alone, Satan is the lesser of 2 evils. He is only responsible for 10 deaths, including the sons of Job (killed with the explicit agreement of Jahveh). By contrast, God kills or orders the killing of between 2,500,000 to 25,000,000 people (estimations vary depending on the scholar). Including women and children (e.g Medianites).

      Not so great are they? If they cease to exist. So their whole purpose in life is to be fertiliser? Like all humans. Exactly what has Dawkins/Dillahunty done to contribute to the advancement of humanity? They aren't Telsa v2.0 are they? All Dawkins has done is to mock and ridicule religion. Not really advancing technology or humanity is it? While humans exists there will always be some form of religion.

      Jack - have you read any of Dawkins scientific books? To say he has done nothing suggests that you are not aware of the many things he has accomplished.

    • @veganath
      @veganath 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jack the reason Richard ridicules religion is that he recognizes that the sooner we get it out of the way the quicker we will advance science and resolve the pressing issues of the human condition, and these 'issues' are only technical in nature.

    • @tennis5126
      @tennis5126 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Veganath. One man or society can not stop religion, we are born religious believing in some form of god (yourself, a deity, money, theist, etc). Religion doesn't stop the advancement of technology, morals do Scientology would probably allow gene manipulation while Christians would be against it. Also if there is no religion in the future, what makes us human? If an highly intelligent AI that has a programmed consciousness and is migrate in a human body, then what differentiates us from them? Nothing. If you are religious it would be our spirit/soul and the thought of an afterlife/God. Also morals/ethics will be against humans in the future if there is no religion. Religion prevents us from the destruction of humanity from the secularist. Which is more ethical? For a baby consciousness to migrated to a machine or to leave it in its' biological body? The secularist would say machine because it has a better chance of survival. The Christians would say leave it in its' biological body. In the future there will be cast system the tanshumanists vs the biological humans. Secularism is about dividing and division.
      Kath and Gordon.
      I haven't read his books, I've listen to him in interviews, scientist panel, debates and other youtube videos and also read about him on wikipedia. How exactly are his books revolutionary? As I said he hasn't advanced technology or humanity as a whole. What he's done is made us less empathetic, more materialistic, more narcissistic, aggressive towards other world views that we don't agree/understand about. Logic beats speculation response is the perfect example of the demographic that listen to Dawkins. These people I avoid and so should you. He's an atheist but some of the things he says sound more nihilistic. I thought i'd get this backlash from the Dawkins supporters. You're the ones that are brain washed in his systematic so called biology/science. How do we know anything to be certain? I'm a sceptic to everything. Scientist are apart of the system of control.
      I'm in the Dawkins realm area and from past experiences, these conversations don't get anywhere. But please think about it, this is my final message. Bye.

      ok, so an old man ex mormon ex atheist born again christian talks for 30min about insulting nature of the internet (one site actually) and realises that we can't love without being loved by god first. He said he wasn't looking for god, wasn't praying, he was just struck by knowledge of love from god.
      conclusion: God waited for 60 or so years to reveal the truth to this man.
      My question: why doesn't god do that in the early stages of life for EVERY human so we don't spend our lives in delusion?
      By experience of this man, it is obvious it can happen even if you are not looking for god, not praying to him. So why doesn't it?
      Answer: because there is no god. Not one. Never was.
      He was deluded by mormon faith for 10 years because of something he ate which made him feel burning sensation in his chest while praying. I hope that chilli part was a joke.
      I would thought he would have learned something from that. Obviously he didn't.

    • @jordythebassist
      @jordythebassist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Cleo Fierro Your statement is so fractally flawed that it's garbage, but:
      1. Atheism is the rejection of theistic claims, not the assertion of anti-theistic claims
      2. Atheists have no need to prove anything to validify their position
      3. Your logic towards your god can be applied to any other claim like unicorns, leprechauns and the FSM and you are in the position where you need to believe all those claims of existence since nobody can't prove them wrong. Do you believe them?

My facebook wall is flooded daily with religious memes but as soon as I post anything mildly secular I end up in an argument. Some "friends" stopped talking to me as well. This can extremely frustrating when you slowly feel cut off from your family and community just because you don't share their views. I have been a fan of Professor Richard Dawkins for decades, and read all of his books, and had seen most I could find of his documents and lectures on both evolutionary biology, and Atheism since I was much younger. I have since through youtube and other media have been been turned on to others in both of those fields. Matt is one of my favorites. He has no degree's in any kind of science, but yet he holds himself equally with others like Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson, Dr. Lawrence Krauss, and others like that. To see this conversation with these two was very special for me to see. And I would have to think that Matt must of had to think to himself, would I have ever thought in my earlier years on the Atheist Experience on a podcast, would ever in his life being in a conversation with Richard Dawkins. And in truth, ... I am so glad that they did.
