Had an exact same issue with pump on one of these. The difference is I sold it and had someone coming to pick the thing up after it was sat for ages, went to start it - nothing. They were an hour into a 1.5 hour journey to fetch it. We pulled the pump - ran it forwards and backwards using a power probe on bench and hey presto it came back to life, banged it back in and it started just as the fella turned up!!
Being very tired after a 28 hour shift fixing heavy expensive crap for corporate types, I stuck 70 quid of petrol into my diesel mondeo on the way home. It duly shat itself right at the toll booth on the motorway. I then set the un-official record for "driving a diesel mondeo the furthest on just the starter motor because everyone behind is getting hugely moody at your car not driving.." It is a very useful Skill to have in your tool-box of tricks. :-)
@@martinwarner1178 Years ago a former colleague mistakenly filled up our Transit minibus (old generation N-reg) with petrol whilst on a week long job in Southern Ireland. His solution was to spend his entire day off on a 300 mile drive to get rid of all the dodgy mix! And no complaints from the Transit (apart from the 300 mile long smoke trail...)
Moving a vehicle on the starter is a good way of getting you out of harms way when the engine dies. I used to you this all the time in my early days. It's something the younger generation should learn to use ( only manual gearboxes of course)
I used to work for a company called not escorts we used to break mk1 2 and 3 golfs watching this feels like going back in time If I remember right that's the small manifold model that had 115 bhp the big manifold had 130 they weren't as good as the mk2 but still a good car and that's low mileage for one of those back when is was dealing with them was hard to find one with less than 200k up it I whach all the vids on your channel and love them good to see someone like minded to me Keep up the good work see you next time
That engine was also used in Audi 80 and A4, Passat, various seat and Skoda models as well. Brilliant engine based on the same family of engines going back to the 1500 Golf MK1.
Had one a few years ago. Mechanically brilliant (200K+) but a right rotter. Inner sills, floorpan, tailgate. And it had oxidised to traditional Royal Mail pink!
She started really easy !! A lot of them Mk3 Golf's succumbed to scrapagge - They were once a common sight but now well depleted - Thats a survivor and it will most certainly live on thanks to you ! Really enjoyed the video lad - The more you ask for it the better chance it will be bought by a sympathetic owner !! I'd love it myself but the Irish government would gladly relieve me of my left testicle !
I love a mk3 golf very under rated cars . I own a mk3 1.9d estate, I bought that for 150 6 years and 60k ago it's been a great car.Im hoping for another 6 years out of it. Before that I had mk3 1.8 , 8 v gl for 12 years. And that cost me £250. I enjoyed your video. Cars aren't cheap anymore 😢
I took one in px on a px that owned me nothing so I basically had the free est golf gti mk3 3dr going, it was that purple blue on a P reg and was actually tidy and original so I I didn’t even see it the owner just asked to chop it in so I said yeah . It had aircon which blew ice cold so I motd it and put a cambelt on and smoked it, then I decided the drivers seat was letting the otherwise mint interior down so I found a left hooker and ripped the material I needed out of a LHD drivers seat and gave it my trimmer and had a perfect interior . Basically them mk3’s other than rust were the best golfs, total reliability, comfortable, sporty no dodgy eml’s and other than window regulators etc they kept going . That’s why it’s good to see a relic like this brought back to life because actually these are good cars despite the owners neglect
I owned an 1995 N-reg 16V GTI. This has rounded tinted side indicators so is a later model. Mine had rectangular orange side indicator lights but same smaller front spoiler. The 8V was underpowered for the badge.
yes the 8v was the first and last GTI I drove, embarrassing to say the least, I did own a Sirocco 1.8 J-tronic injection great car quick good on fuel and with uprated adjustable suspension fabulous handling
I adore my MK3 GTi same spec as the one in the video but mines an R reg and black. Great cars bought it in 2015 still going strong. Worst thing about MK3s though is rot unfortunately a real pain in the arse but its worth the trouble in my opinion.
I had the same year, colour and 5 door as this. But mine had the 2.8 VR6. I have never been so disappointed in a cars performance before or since. Slow and drank like a fish. Rolling road showed in the 8 years since leaving Wolfsburg it had lost 3bhp. I kept it about 8 months.
Love my mk3 8v in tornado pinks 106k motor is strong as fun to drive just need to swap the gear box out for a shorter ratio one gives them a bit more zip
you really need to think about this car !!!! its a gti its the best of the mk3's !! these are really rare now !! well worth fixing up or storing away for another 10 years ...
Could you imagine how bad a brand new car would look after the amount of time parked? It's remarkable how little it's aged.. Bet the sides of it would wax up like new..
We have one of these Mk3 in dragon green, 90k miles and absolutely no rust! We are in southern Spain that’s why no rust. Lovely cars, well built and a bit of a collector car now. Not many about these days. Don’t know how Ultra Low emissions will affect us yet as ULEZ not being introduced yet even though EU say must start in 2023.
Had a hire van, but literally had no fuel to reach the first petrol station. Conked out 50 yards before it, put it in gear and cranked it to the pump. Does work, but don't do it too long though...
I got it off a mate in Yeovil, I've had 13 of them now! Just chucked it on a private plate! G3JVX now! I can tell you, she runs ever so sweet! Still sporting the lacquer peel!

I agree and you can also do this to drive away a car with no clutch
agreed
Indeed.. your battery won’t thank you tho… you can also use the clutch for more control. (Crank and use the clutch as normal)
I think you should show this to the salvage rebuilds uk guys Rob and Chris. Be good to see it get the right treatment and make raffle off to a viewer.
Great videos far better than what's on TV these days.

a tip for when doing these type of intank pumps, when you remove the pump put the locking ring

Luckily here in Germany there are many old vw in use. I have got a 26 years old vw vento 1.8 glx and I am really happy with it 😊
I have a GLS in El Salvador, good cars but hard to find mechanics for VW here though plenty of parts available.

That brings back memories. I had an N reg golf GTi in black. Not a bad car.
this is my dream first car... i have loved them my whole life!!
Great vid, brings back memories of my mk3 now they're so expensive, already classicish status
Nice, there was a 2.0 16v version of the mk3 gti and these 2.0 8v engines were also available in the VW Golf avantgarde convertibles.
was it the agg in the convertables? thought it was a different 2.0 8v
in them

Had a mk3 8v, 16v and VR6. Blew VR6 engine at 140mph and rhe others died of rust. Id have the 16v back in a heartbeat it was great!

that is a very beautiful Golf 3
I still think the MK3 looks fresh a really good looking car
Hi mate, love your channel 👍👍 how much would you be looking for, for the GTI? Thanks mate
I got a vr6 that i have had nearly 16 years, love them motors

I love the mk3 golf am just obsessed with them I want one as my first car in the same style as yours 😄
Proper old school mechanic .
Brilliant quite enjoyed that, being a mk3 it will be absolutely riddled with rust
Always wanted a Golf GTI I’m interested .👏👍🏻

Never seen a car drive on the power of the starter motor before. Definitely surprised me, that.
Had a hire van, but literally had no fuel to reach the first petrol station. Conked out 50 yards before it, put it in gear and cranked it to the pump. Does work, but don't do it too long though...
Not meaning to be cheeky or anything but I thought everyone knew you can move the car with the starter, unless battery failure
@@game4alaughman never seen it.

Good watch as always.

Good cars not as fun as the mk1, 2 or 4 but absolutely solid cars back in the day.
Did it ever sell?
Yes long gone 👍
15 quid? Where do i find cars for that price anywhere 😮
I made a good profit on a 2.0 8 valve Gti tornado red r32 wheels looked fabulous but 30 mpg and as slow as a snail
What's the VW part number for that cambelt cover stick mate ?? Could do with one of those .
@6D is there a way i could buy and own one too. I'm a fan of VW cars
