Fire Truck Goes Down While Fighting A 10,000 Acre Wildfire!

  • This type 4 wild land fire engine was working on the Crazy Creek Fire in the Ochoco National Forest, which as of editing this video is 15,000 acres and 0% contained, when it went into limp mode due to an emissions derate. Luckily the crew was able to drive it away from the active fire and down to base camp where they sent me to go pick it up, but this just goes to show how dangerous this emissions equipment is on these emergency vehicles. There is absolutely nothing physically wrong with the truck that should stop it from functioning as normal and continuing to do its job. But due to some sensor or computer glitch, the truck was brought down in a dangerous situation with a crew of fire fighters out on the line. Now on top of that, the truck has to be towed to a dealership where it will be out of commission for who knows how long during a time when we are already stretched WAY too thin on fire fighting resources.

Update: This fire is now over 60,000 acres.
Also, the truck is too tall to go on the deck, no you can’t just put the transfer case in neutral, and leaving it idle to keep transmission fluid pumping would be a $25k gamble that a truck that’s already in derate wouldn’t shut itself off if left idling for an hour and a half.

Why couldn't you just put the the transfer case in neutral since almost all 4x4 vehicles can be flat towed by placing the transfer case in neutral. Starting in the 1980s most transfer cases have self contained lubrication pumps driven from the rear output shaft.

We had a 1982 Ford that had limp mode before limp mode was even a thing! It would just suddenly die or the lights would just shut off It was always hit or miss until that fateful day it actually got hit. I unfortunately was driving it at the time and ended up leaving me with a neck injury and two crushed disc's in my neck that have bothered me ever since.

Emissions systems, on a wildland fire appliance? You have to be kidding. US military vehicles don't have any, and neither do cop cars, what the hell do fire trucks? While ours do here in Australia it's a one-button override for as long as needed.
I cut fire trails with a 1938 D6, 8 litres, 3 cylinders, no electrics at all apart from the magneto on the pony. No way would I be on a fireground on a dozer with emissions gear, it's already dangerous enough. As long as my girl has fuel and air, she'll run.

Your government actually has a brain between them. Probably took 1 person to raise the question during a committee meeting. What happens if the computer detects an emissions problem during a fire?...6seconds later... Well shit we can't have that then. How about a switch to tell the computer it's ok to ignore it? Excellent solution, all in favor? Eye. Motion carried, what's for lunch.

@@tomviolette7053 My guess is you have to pull axle shafts. It might depend on the truck I think all the trucks that have two drive axles have a rear axle with a clutch disconnect for the motor. Theoretically you would have to make sure the clutch is disconnected and then you can tow it like normal.

For future reference if the trick has a split shaft transfer case to drive the fire pump you don’t have to pull the drive shaft to tow by engaging the pump which disconnects the rear axle from the transmission. It is in a case full of gear oil and will lubricate the bearing in the pump transmission.

I’m in a fire department in Montana and our fire truck certified mechanic told me that def/DPFs or whatever emissions systems aren’t required on fire apparatus. Also when I was in the military they deleted all of our vehicles that had diesel emissions. I'm a former FF/EMT chauffer. Depends on the state. However the way the law reads its on the engine type vs chassis type. That what I was told by our mechanic. The fire service as a whole has to push back to get that exemption changed. But since many government agencies follow "California Emissions" California will never change the standards. And since the new Electeic fire engines cost $1.85 million a piece.... yeah... we are in trouble in the volunteer service.

The thing that gets me is that I'm pretty sure emergency apparatus, while they are required to have the emissions aftertreatment system, are *NO LONGER* (as of like 2013) required by the EPA to derate in fault conditions. Christmas tree of warning lights, yes, potentially belching incredibly toxic partially-treated exhaust, but it should maintain full power specifically for these life safety reasons. You just have to contact the engine manufacturer with your bona fides to get that ECU programming (and, of course, the engine manufacturer needs to have programming for it. Pro tip for the iPhone calculator users, looking at you Casey. If you miss-input a number, or miss a number, you can swipe across the screen to delete and retry without clearing the rest of your previous calculation.
So you could have left the 5100+35700+4 (swipe across to delete it), correct to 14350 and still hit =. Now you don't have to remember the previous numbers!

I understand the disaproval of Def because of its high fail rate. And esspecially first aid equipment should be reliable at all times. But? is it the Def system or bad Def causing it? Here in europe there are not that many failures. It seems more reliable. Different engines/systems?
Note to myself? #1 inspect truck before leaving and blame the new employee if things are missing😂.
#2 check the truck i want to tow if i pul it forward or backyard before turning it around. But then we would not have had this content.

Those wood blocks are the key tool for any work truck 😂, I had to pick up a trailer once solo and found out the jack on it was broken and it sat a few inches under the hitch. No air bags no hydraulics so I pulled forward and placed some wood blocks for the front tires to reverse over to lower my fixed hitch in rear and then another piece of cribbing to pry with to pop it into place. Maybe two buff guys could of lifted the tongue but it was a Reel trailer so all the weight is on tongue jack with not any real leverage to teeder the rear of the trailer.

I'm a retired firefighter, currently enjoying your newest video about towing the fire engine. A couple of points - fire engines with tanks are usually shipped with about. Quarter tank of water. When they're empty, the tank can bounce in its frame, causing wear. Also, not sure about that forestry rig, but our structural trucks had a bypass for the regen so it wouldn't do anything unexpected while pumping or something.

    • @gregoetker1389
      @gregoetker1389 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Depending on how rough the roads are, an empty tank is better than a partial full due to the water sloshing back and forth, which could break the internal baffle walls since most tanks are made out of plastic and the plastic welds can break. It's a no-win situation. I've had to put my Tanker truck in the shop. My coverage area didn't have a lot of hydrants.

Nice to have the air tanker center so close at RDM airport. it was quite the air show for a while with 3 tankers, 2 helicopters and an air boss plane. Big DC-10 tanker brought up from Sacramento. At one point 10,000 Pacific Power customers lost power in 103° heat, Fortunately our neighborhood is on a different provider. They had it under control in a few hours; those firefighters and all those that assist them are great.
