My brother used to be an assistant wrestling coach at Sickles High School in Tampa from summer 2001-2005 and when he saw this he didn't see any wrongdoing by either wrestler. The ref must have seeing things that never happened.

No, they POORLY called hands to the face...when it was to the forehead...which is legal. This ref had some issue with that team or...IDK. Sloppy.

That is the ALL TIME WORST CALL I'VE EVER SEEN. The Ref wanted to Beat his chest and show that he was in charge when in fact his position is to try to help the kids. IF the kid was continually doing something wrong or illegal after being warned he should stop the match and tell the kids and COACHES. Then if it happened again take action... The kid obviously didn't know what was going on.

I think more to the point... the official doesn't recognize that it is a Technical Violation, and not an Illegal hold. That error leads one to wonder if he's therfore calling the 'Hands to the Face' (or 'raking the face) correctly... Seems like this is a bit of a stretch. But... He called it.

In my HS years I never had the intelligence or maturity to wrestle. I was the horror show that knew enough to quit before I was banned. I had reasonable skills but would lose my mind when being bested. Not a good trait. Perfect gentleman now
The match was ended because it was boring. This is why I liked watching the heavy weight matches. It was like being on a river boat in Africa watching the hippos slam their jiggly masses against each other to establish dominance.

I rewatched the video and did see one instance of hands to the face, but my question is this: why did the ref not assess the penalty the moment it happened? Why did he wait until the end of the period to assess the penalty and DQ the wrestler in the blue singlet? From my point of view, he was being the most aggressive wrestler, attempting several single leg takedowns, and his opponent did mostly countering the attacks. I believe this was a poor job of officiating.

There may have been earlier call before this clip, but the first pt shown on this clip was 1pt, so the one that ended the match should have been 2pts, not dq. Only way this should have resulted in a dq is if there was a previous unsportsmanlike call...then the shown roughness call, followed by the second unsportsmanlike call that ended it. Don’t know about HS, but NCAA has reclassified hands to the face from unnecessary roughness to illegal hold, so refs are no longer forced to initially take pts. They can blow it up and address either wrestler...basically intervene at their discretion like a potentially dangerous call. This ref may have also been calling him for the ear slap(which didn’t look to bad), but who knows what he did earlier to get to this point. Impossible to judge without seeing the whole match.
Hmm maybe the ref use to be the head coach. Happened to me once. Ref was a teacher from our school who use to be the head coach. I don’t recall exact details, but the next day at school I recall having words with the teacher/ref. He said something about our coach. Again I don’t recall what was said but it was clear he had an issue with the new coach. After we had words I was sent to the office. The teacher never called our matches again.

Too much defensive is not wrestling. It is avoidance. Neither wrestler was exhibiting high level moves. Kinda reminded me of H.S. wrestling of the 1970s and 1980s . Being bigger after cutting a lot of weight and in better physical condition won more matches than exhibiting wrestling moves.

I officiate and I don't know if it's because I'm young but I rarely call clubbing, or illegal slams (you have to not control the return I don't care if he's 10 ft in the air if it's controlled and you don't bring him down on his shoulder/head area....good to go.) I see so many older refs calling the dumbest shit....but maybe my perspective will change when I'm their age.
A slam is when either wrestler lifts their opponents feet off the mat and fails to return them safely or with unnecessary force... Their was no slam here ...I don't know what he called and neither does he or anyone else for that matter.....

Hands to the face is a technical violation by application (the moment it occurs). Especially after the ref warns you about it. NOT an illegal hold though as it was called here.

I'm sure the ref is no longer an active referee. Some of these refs just crave authority and this guy fits the bill perfectly. I would say that a lot of officials were college wrestlers. But that would be difficult as most of them become coaches instead of officials. Either way, this guy needs to chill out and let them take care of themselves on the mat. Nothing to see her.

Literally there was nothing illegal to Warren a disqualification. They were both in the neutral position and while both weren’t really doing that much they were still on occasions going for shots. There was no punches thrown no nothing. The only thing I could say is that they possibly both were stalling but in that sense in the neutral position it’s kind of hard to call that since neither one of them are really doing that much. But even with stalling it doesn’t warrant a disqualification it would just be you get a couple of points if you keep doing it. This has to be the worst officiating I’ve ever seen from a rough. And in my days of wrestling in high school I’ve seen some pretty terrible calls.

lol coach should file a grievance with the officiating body and have the ref suspended for failure to not only do his job but to know the rules or in this case any rules and not be reinstated till he goes through a certified USA ref clinic.

When you get ref like this the best thing to is to play defensive and not do the tap to the forehead like this guy although this was legal this ref called it. I had a ref like this at my tournament for hurricane classic and thought my cradle was locking hands so after the call I ran a normal half and kept him on his back for 12 seconds.

What more did he want to do... He tried three time to enter he ended up guillotined... His trainer thought he had to continue...train him better

lol coach should file a grievance with the officiating body and have the ref suspended for failure to not only do his job but to know the rules or in this case any rules and not be reinstated till he goes through a certified USA ref clinic.

I have absolutely no clue what the ref was calling there....like really. The ref just reminded me of John Dupont from Foxcatcher. That's all I thought the entire time after the first terrible call.

When you get ref like this the best thing to is to play defensive and not do the tap to the forehead like this guy although this was legal this ref called it. I had a ref like this at my tournament for hurricane classic and thought my cradle was locking hands so after the call I ran a normal half and kept him on his back for 12 seconds.
You got called for locked hands on a cradle? Even if we lose the arm they don’t call it locked hands
What? I dont get it. Did the rules change? I saw nothing that was in anyway against any rules I've ever know in wrestling, and I've been wrestling for 30yrs. #iowawrestling
