  • This video is all about making a delicious and authentic Burmese dish called balachaung. It's a shrimp powder-based dish that is super flavorful and easy to make. This video walks you through all the steps so you can make it at home. So check it out and learn how to make this amazing dish!
Burmese balachaung is a condiment made with dried shrimp, garlic and onion. There are many variations, but this is my take on it. You can make it with all dry ingredients, but it won’t be as tasty. This Balachaung is not only easy to make, you can also keep it for months in airtight container in the fridge.
A few things to keep in mind:
*Normally, you’ll want to fry the garlic longer, unlike this video.
*I avoided high heat and fried everything patiently.
*Some Red Pepper are hotter than others.
*Once you turn off the heat, transfer your Balachaung to another plate or container and don’t let it cool down on its own in the pan.
*Some chili powder are hot, but others are just for the colors like Paprika.
*I mixed Shrimp Power, Salt, MSG, Chili Powder, and Crushed Red Pepper together beforehand. You can add these ingredients one by one instead.

Note: Fish Sauce can be over-powering. You could just add some extra salt without the fish sauce.

You can certainly try. How about substituting with something else like dried fish? I also usually substitute fish sauce with just salt.

With rice mostly. I eat it with some vegetable like cucumber. Each bite will have some of this, a slice of cucumber in a handful of rice.

Paprika powder is not an ingredient that should be used!! Sorry! Wouldn’t make this recipe, it has to be chilli only!
