Here’s a proper Tempting AMG Power Wagon! Welcome back to RBR guys, and I’ve covered the #C43 of the new gen a few times recently, but today we’re looking at the variant that may be the most attractive… the C43 estate/wagon/t modell/touring/family hauler!! #MercedesAMG make some of the world’s best looking and fastest wagons, so I have high hopes for this car after driving the sedan version!
The is a very different set up to the V6 3.0 big turbo engine in the previous 205 series C43 - that engine was a conventional “off the line” Mercedes Benz engine, with some AMG software, so it was an engine you’d see used in a plethora of other Mercedes cars. It did sound great, and was potent at 362 BHP, with the Facelift giving 390bhp. However it was linked to a torque convertor gearbox, inspiring chassis set up and very safe looks.
With this new generation, some things like the 4Matic and the basic design similarity to the standard New C Class still exists. BUT huge changes come else where - especially with engine!! Most assume it’s a huge downgrade going to 4 cylinders, but in reality this is more of an AMG engine than the C43 has had before. Now it uses a variation of the engine found in the new A45, but longitudinally mounted PLUS the first use of an F1 derived “E TURBO”. It’s also a “one man one engine” unit meaning it was built by hadn’t rather than being machine made! This makes the C43 a proper AMG, sharing it’s engine with only the new SL43 and future C63S hybrid.
The engine is not massively powerful, at 408BHP, less torque at 500NM and a quoted 0-60 of 4.7 - but you’ll see me do it faster!
But impressive is the world's first electric exhaust gas turbocharger, paired to a combustion engine. This is a turbo straight out of the AMG ONE hyper car and the C63S to come. Thanks to a 4cm electric motor inside the turbocharger shaft, the turbos stay spooled and ready before the Exhaust gases reach the turbos thus giving a much more responsive feel which makes the engine feel more natural! A belt starter generator gives it an additional 14HP when required too.
As for the chassis it’s all C43 unique versus normal C Class, with the proper AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with Adaptive Damping, lightweight coil springs, stabiliser bars/struts and an aluminium sheer panel on the front all to help dynamics. It also gets the brilliant AMG variable ratio steering and rear axle steering as standard, up to 2.5 degrees.
The gearbox comes from E63, the wet clutch AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9 speed - the best box AMG makes in standard cars. 4matic is as before, with a 69 bias on the rear, and of course we have AMG’s own Braking system, and AMG Performance Exhaust system augmented by “AMG Real Performance Sound” with a microphone picking up actual engine sound and feeding it inside.
The wagon has a large boot with even more space hidden under flaps in the floor, as well as the ability to split fold 3 or 2 of the seats and act as a huge luggage hauler! Our car today has the Aerodynamic Package, which on the wagon adds the front splitter extension, larger from aero flicks, a more aggressive diffuser and an additional rear spoiler - all in gloss black.
A C63 wagon will also come with an additional hybrid system on the rear boosting this system’s power to 670BHP - but will it be too heavy? We will see.
Today I want to see how the C43 wagon does vs the sedan, as well as some key rivals like the m340i. Will it have enough emotion and dynamism to keep an AMG addict happy? Let’s find out!

I think you’d have to be a committed Mercedes C-Class fan to get one of these over the six-cylinder M340i.
I mean strictly performance sure. But other factors make it still a hard choice. Interior, styling, etc still matters when choosing a long term car.
sounds better but def not good. bmw made it sound like a vacuum cleaner. And besides the sound there are not many points where the m340i is objectively better than the c43
The perfect c43 was a 2019/2020/2021 Coupé. Extremely Loud exhaust, likely one of the loudest stock v6’s on the market, 4500 Idle Red line, and the look is incredible.
My thoughts are the new 2 liter 4 cyl c43’s will be a mega flop.
Agreed! 340i over this any day! 6 cylinders over 4 cylinders any day!
@@sapnupuas7271 Sound can be sorted with a performance aftermarket exhaust, 6 cylinders over the 4 apart from the sound is just way more refined!

The resale of the v8 c63 have just shot up. This is a great car but the point of any Amg/m/rs car isn’t just the numbers. It’s that roar and the way u feel. The jag f type isn’t great but the sound of that v8 is what makes it an amazing experience. I’m fine with downsizing but keep the amg division out of it.
I would like the digital dash and better gearbox in the pre-opf version of the C63. Also the C63 is way to stiff for daily use.

A bit disappointed that is slower than my w205 c43. Wasn't expecting that. I've pulled 4.0 seconds flat.
This car is set-up in KPH 0-100 = 0-62. Still would not be 4 flat in the wagon - but I haven't seen anyone crack 4.2 in a stock w205 either.
@@AlexA-bx8jr what do you mean? Even CarandDriver magazine testing they were pulling 4.1 all day. Their article on the 2019 c43 talks about it. My best pull was 4 flat via dragy device. Getting 4.2 was easily replicated.
@@AlexA-bx8jr I’ve seen 3.9 on my 2020 c43 Coupé. The new 2 liter 4cyl c43 is a complete failure.
@@themercedestraveler9566 He got 4.2 0-62 in the sedan (in the wet). The performance is nearly the same for that singular metric. Car and driver doesn't count the first foot in their testing. Good to hear people are breaking 4 in their w205 - I just don't really see that on the forums in stock form. 4.2 seems like the common area where they fall.
@@AlexA-bx8jr 4.2 is definitely the common number that is produced. But with all factors in place you can roll a stock 4 secs flat.
As AMG fan, the fake sounds that you are being fed with through speakers is just disappointing

If that’s similar to the engine Lewis & George are driving to (2 consecutive) DOUBLE podiums, then I think the tamed street version will be good enough for me. Yeah, the sound isn’t quite what one desires but, living in a built up area, at least it’s both (1) audibly present & (2) respectful of the neighbours. But why the f**k isn’t it available in the USA?!?!? The wagon’s/estate’s lines are FAR SUPERIOR to the C43 sedan’s AND it bridges the gap between the utility of the SUV and the drivability of the sedan. I’d just LOVE to toss that thing into some twisties to test the seat bolstering! We haven’t seen anything in the US detailing the specs of the AMG GLC43 Coupe yet for 2023 (and trying to find the right spec 2022 AMG GLC43 Coupe is like trying to mine for Unobtainium). Now having seen the interior cabin of the 2023 C43 wagon, I’d be REALLY tempted to buy one of those instead of the AMG GLC43 Coupe. Just keep making both of them in (something similar to) Brilliant Blue!

+1 .. Informative review! .. Go figure; Canada imports the C-Klass Kombi and the E Klass Kombi... The States only brings in the E-Klass Kombi in All Terrain trim.. It kind of sucks. .. Our ordered MY23 E-450 All Terrain has its build this month August. ..

Serious question, had a test drive yesterday and the auto and manual gear change when driving around town were jerky. Do you remember experiencing this?
But you can't spec those seats on the U.K, tell mercedes to give the U.K same options list as the rest of the E.U, oh no brits you can't have sports seats but the Irish can, why ?

My inherited (deceased uncle) '94 E-Class E320 coupe (C124) is built like a tank...The 3.2l inline 6 cyl twin cam snarls after 3,5K RPM... Its Inline 6cyl is silky smooth, the Euro 3.6l version even better. .. The coupes mint condition defies its age. . Cheers, M/S

The biggest problem with the C Klasse Estate is that most people will just assume it is a C220D taxi….of course it is not remotely like the base car but it does look so and silver paint does not help. It needs bespoke and unique colours…that rendering of a gaudily liveried C63S actually gave the car some life. It will be good…the M340i might have a smoother engine but then it has 15 year old looks so I would possible choose this…but what colour and what risk???….hmmm…good but I’m not sure. 🧐 the sound….really??….a parpy, crackly, engineered, false sound….horrible to my ears…good luck with that one but not for me.

To much "blurry reving sound" from the 4 cylinder engine though. Love the look of the car and new interiour but the C43 that i own now is killing this one soundwise..🤔 One more thing, stop being so shocked broo..it's 'n amg.. 🙃

still prefer the C63s.....old school V8 with the soundtrack to match
im not a huge fan of the interior or exterior changes... loses too much character with the flat tablet for digital cluster, large tesla like console tablet. headlights and tail lights look worse too. only thing im okay with is the steering wheel change but even then if I had to pick between the 2020 refresh and this one, i'd still take the 2020. worst change is losing the great v6/v8 feel and sound.
Be honest, your ‘lovely’ review is only because you enjoy your personal relationship with Mercedes. And it’s obvious.

Not just Canada; its the whole of North America! They are seriously missing out on sales. Now that damn near ALL North Americans have been so "socialised" to SUVs (and, God help us, minivans), we've begun to understand and appreciate the wagon/estate family hauler. I'd love the "problem" of deciding if I want this or the AMG GLC 43 Coupe (which is also just about impossible to find).

Are these TH-camrs getting payed to big up the sound. I get it's a 4 cylinder but for Christ sake this is a far cry from a grumbling AMG engine. Sounds like a tin full of nails. Lord help us when the 63 gets released!
