Just bought a PC Engine CD rom2 and was watching a few repair videos; then stumbled across this! Good to put a face to Bithead’s repair man! Good job! Sip-a-kawfee to you sir!!!
Congrats on getting the PC engine CD ROM. This was honestly the first time I've done any work for mr. Bit head. So any work he had had done prior was done by somebody else. Either way, I was happy to help out with this one.
Excellent! Luckily it was a simple fix. I watched his video when this broke, I thought Duo-Rs were the most reliable. Maybe it’s because he drags it out from the basement to the shed all the time? :)
@@BitHead1000 ah Shithead1000 himself! :) well I would say it wouldn’t break itself but old electronics have a habit of breaking for no good reason don’t they.. Massive fan btw, loved your recent biker episode, the raping....
The RGB mod is still in there. I also added the extra capacitors for the jail bar fix for him. I just temporarily moved it out of the way so I could see things on the board more clearly.
@@Chris-Courage Awesome! I know BitHead1000 doesn't own an RGB monitor, but does that DIN support HD-Retrovision Genesis 2 cables with the Duo adaptor? Or would he need a custom cable?
@@PabstOban unfortunately the pinout for a Genesis is different than a Duo. Technically I could wire it differently for him so a set of retrovision cables will work. However, with the way the wiring currently is, the best cheaper option would be to get a RAD 2X PC engine Duo HDMI cable .
@@Chris-Courage HD-Retrovision made a ton of adapters for the Genesis 2 cable. I sent Jesse one for his Neo Geo, and two others (maybe it was the Saturn and the Genesis 1 that I got as extras buying bundles when the cables were sold out). They recently made one that is supposed to work on the Genesis 2 cable (you plug the 3 inch cable and it adjusts the DIN size, each is different).| The Duo one covers the Duo/R/RX and the Super Grafx. I'm guessing in that dongle they do some wire adjustment... just wasn't sure if it would do the trick with his particular RGB mod.
New sub here by way of kidshoryuken. Job well done on that duo-r. Question have you ever seen one of these where the cd drive spun ok for a while then a day later cd stopped spinning all together. You think it would be a similar fix? I know these questions are a pain but if you could point me in the area of the board i should be looking at it would be a big help. Thank you kind genius.
For a white duo-r? That issue could be a couple things. One of the lens adjustments could be just barely out of wack, one of the lens wires could have a short, or the lens has gone bad. Also, make sure the lens motor isn't stuck. This can happen when they wear out.
@@guysafari My guess is the plastic making process wasn't quality controlled the best. Although I will say from experience, it could be dirt build up as generally a mrclean magic eraser can make the eject/open button match the color of the rest of the console again.
Question for you. I just did a full clean and recap of a black duo. Works fine but the laser seems loud when it seeks. I lubed it all up. Is this a normal noise? Seems like it makes this noise when the laser has to move from the outer edge to the inner edge.
Are you talking about a noise that duo makes when the lens moves back and forth? Does it sound kind of like a rumbling or grinding noise? that sound is actually kind of normal. That's just something those DC motors do. some of those motors won't do it quite as much as others but it's not necessarily a sign that the motor is going bad. Some are just much louder than others. Now if you are talking about a whining sound of sorts, that would be a sign that the lens could need adjustment or that you are possibly using a brand of CD-r media that the lens isn't too keen on trying to read.
@@Chris-Courage definitely the first one you described. It's the sound of the motor pulling or pushing the lens along its full length of travel. I've got 2 more duos to compare when some more capacitors come in. It didn't sound horrible to me just louder than anything I've heard before. I thought the dreamcast was loud.
@@user-wj9xq7ig2v yeah, definitely don't worry about the sound that the motor makes. I've been around some that are twice as loud as others but still work just as good as the more quiet ones. When the motors start to fail, they will start simply getting stuck and won't move the gear as they should.
Are you missing screws or have some of the screw holes stripped out? it's not uncommon for the screw holes to strip out and need a slightly larger screw to then be used instead. I use a #4 standard wood screw type to replace the screws when the holes are stripped.

Apparently I did notice your channel earlier than I thought and glad it was a relatively easy fix for ole BitHead.
A nice little repair for the greatest videogame program in the history of human civilization? I'm INNNN!
And just like that, we repaired a game console.
Sippa coffee for that audio fix
I get that reference
Bithead is the TH-cam Don.
That he is
Great video. Loved the outro too 😆

It's really hard to say what would cause it. Everything else on the motherboard looked absolutely perfect with no sign of corrosion whatsoever.
Hey guy... I don’t drag it through mud puddles on my way out to the shed.

I'm very grateful you were able to get BitHead1000's DuoRX back up and running.
Was the RGB mod removed from his unit? I don't see it in the video.

What is with these consoles always being slightly differently colored? This one's open button almost looks grey

damn dude if I ever need PCE repairs I'll send it off to you haha. good stuff
Do you repair any other cd based systems like Sega cd? lmk (from the bithead1000 xmas video)
Sure, depending on the exact issue the drive is having, I can generally repair most issues with Sega CD drives as well.
@@Chris-Courage whats a email or something I can get in touch with and discuss further.
