Learning How To Use A New Baitcaster - Beginner Baitcaster Tips

  • Since I'm learning how to use a new baitcaster, its time to share some beginner baitcaster tips. This is my first time fishing with the Lews American Hero Left Hand Retrieve baitcast reel! I have been fishing with right hand retrieve reels for over 25 years. So this is like learning how to use a baitcaster all over again. The two most important tips for a beginner involve the tension and the magnetic brake. Using these beginner baitcaster tips, I am able to use the new reel without getting any backlashes. I also catch a few bass while I learn! I hope learning how to use a new baitcaster is a little easier with these beginner baitcaster tips.

Right on Alex!! You are always challenging yourself and that's why I like your channel so much!! Left hand retrieval is like bouncing a basketball you have to get use to it with practice!! Great job and wow that lipless craw color was working quite well!!

Thanks BRO. Can you believe some idiot said I was a groupie for trying something new like Left Hand Retrieve? Of course that dumb shit got banned. #nobullshit

Outstanding!! Its all in preference not whether or not you are a groupie...hilarious!! I can fish both right and left but prefer left handed its just easier for me. Well I am glad you tried something new and like I said thats what makes the channel so interesting to watch plus #nobullshit lol

You did a lot better casting left handed than I did. I bird nested that joker! Maybe some day I will try it again.

I'm right-handed and growing up using spinning gear the handle always seemed to be on the left side. That's what I was used to so when I made the jump to baitcasters, I opted for the left-handed retrieve. I don't have to switch hands after casting so no wasted motion. Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I do most of my fishing from the bank also. Keep up the good work and keep reeling them in!

    • @RealisticFishing
      @RealisticFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Kevin. When distance casting with my right hand retrieve, the switch over happens while the lure is in the air. However, I pitch with my left arm so no crossover is needed. 👍

I switched to all left hand. My son too. After using spinning reels for years, it just felt more natural.

My son in law convinced me last year to switch all (spinning and baitcasters) to left retrieve. Reaction time is significantly better since no time wasted switching hands...you are ready for that bite immediately when bait hits the water. Nice job showing set up, too👍

Great tips on dialing in a BC. Great job using a left handed reel. The advantage of a right handed person using a left handed BC is you don’t have to switch the rod to your other hand after the cast.

once you go with a left handed reel you'll never go back, so much more convenient to not have to swap hands, especially when they're biting in the drop!! Keep it up brother!

Today I used my left handed mach 1 lews baitcaster for the first time. I bought it 2 months ago but didn't know how to use it. Today I threw a rattle trap 1/4 oz. Lipless on it and I caught a 2.34 lbs bass. I tightened it up like you said and I caught a fish on my 8th cast. On my 11th cast I loosened up the break and got a birds nest. But it's awesome to learn and it's so much fun to cast. Thanks for the tutorial. I fished the rattle trap just like you showed

This is exactly how I learned to use a bait caster reel. I got a black max about five months ago and because of your videos I got one of those premier tournament whatever-the-f**cks for thirty bucks on Amazon and I absolutely love it. Now I'm casting with no breaks and just my thumb and I can pitch really accurately. Never thought I'd get this good at bait casters but practice really pays off. Also great job on getting that fish released. Bloody fish gotta get in the water asap to have any chance at survival and it looks like you got him off and then promptly got him in the water. He lost some blood which isn't great but your quick thinking probably raised his chance of survival by about 60%. It sucks I've actually killed fish before when I was younger and I didn't know what I was doing but you're an A+ fish doctor. Keep on slaying brother sorry this is a long comment but forgot to mention those were some SOWBELLY BASS :)

I started saltwater surf casting when I was very young. My Dad swore by Penn reels so I learned to cast with my right hand and retrieve with my left. It was awkward to use a reel with a right-hand retrieve. I had to cast with my right, then hand off the rod to my left hand and crank with my right. I guess I got used to doing it the first way. Good job on the fishing. Learning to use a bait caster from a spinning reel was fun also.

Thanks for the video. You're wearing those fish out with that Rattle Trap. Baitcasters are a real pleasure to fish with, the first time I tried to fish with one I was snapping it like you would when casting a Spinning Reel and didn't know how to properly set one up.......so you can imagine how that turned out. I did get good at picking backlashes out.

I retrieve my open faced spinning reel left handed all the time but I have never tried a casting reel left handed. My excuse has always been that when I cast right handed I use the right hand to hold the rod then I switch the rod to my left hand to retrieve right handed. On a long day switching the rod from one and to the other keeps one hand from getting tired. I know that when I use my spinning reel in the same hand all day it really gets tired. But this is a great idea you have. Great video and I may try it. Thanks as always, Jerry.

This is a pretty cool video... I've been doing a left hand retrieve with my spinning gear my whole life, it just feels natural. The first time I picked up a baitcaster I had to switch over to a right hand retrieve, that felt much more natural, for whatever reason. Watching your video though makes me want to try the left hand retrieve on a baitcaster.

A lot of right hand experience counts for something. I know how the baitcaster works, I just need to practice the movements 👍

It's so messed up, but I'm a leftie, and I can't fish left-handed.It just doesn't feel right for some reason. Kudos to you Mr. Realistic Fisherman!

Another great video man. I’d love to fish with you one day. Your style will help the new generation of anglers find confidence in themselves and feel that that they don’t need drones and high end equipment to enjoy fishing. Tight lines and cold beer brother.

Nicely done Sir. I use left handed reel as I have always reeled my spinning reels with my left hand. I can throw and use the right handed reels if I need to. I have some nice reels in both retrieves so it is good to be ambidextrous that's for sure. I find when you don't have to switch over to reel righty you have more ability to catch those quick biting fish. Also looks like that lipless crank bait is killing it for you. Thanks for the video.

I only fish left handed. Being right handed my right arm is stronger and more dexterous. It gives me a more solid grip on the rod and more control on the spool. I also don't have to worry about missing a fish because I was passing the rod to the other hand.

Being right handed has little to do with your arm being stronger. In fact many right handed people have a stronger left arm and consider themselves right handed because of accuracy with small things like a pencil. I also dont worry about missing fish while passing the the rod because it can happen before the lure even hits the water.

I love the Amazon link you have where it shows what you fish with. I may grab some of that pro cure scent. Give that bluegill slime a try!

Funny that most open faced reels are left handed retrieve but it still feels awkward to me to use a baitcaster that way. But you did it man, I'd say those bass were a real nice way to break in a new one and left handed no less! Nice! You always get such good results with those lipless cranks. Gonna get a cheap little baitcaster as a sort of beater rod soon, so the tips are gonna come in handy!

Because of a wrist injury, I have to now use lefty gear. I bought a Abu Garcia blackmax & a kastking whitemax. The whitemax seems easier to use, but I caught 2 on the Abu Garcia yesterday...jig with a craw trailer & a ribbed worm with a small spinner trailer. The transition was easier than I thought
