You see, drive and GTA both were huge. Where driver offered great graphics but unfinished game, GTA San Andreas offered a great finished game but with fairly outdated graphics.
I really appreciate how you go into the background of all of the game franchises in addition to going in-depth with the graphical differences. Additional points for pronouncing Driv3r correctly as "Driv-three-R" at the beginning :)
All these years later, I am STILL stuck on this game. The mission "The Chase" which I know is near the end, is just too hard for me. One day I'll prevail.

I think i played the chase for 2-3 weeks and gave up. My friend had the game too and he beat it on the 30th something try. It's the hardest level I've ever played in any game.

Lack of shadows in the Siege gives that away. But again. I've learned about this difference just by accident when I started digging into this. There was no way for me really knowing about shadows on PC.

@@SAOin-np1npYou are kidding about dreamcast. Sure, early ports of dreamcast games looked better on dreamcast, but later games looked much better on PS2.
They could have pushed the Xbox much further. Most developers just built the ps2 version and ported it to Xbox with quick changes, like in this instance, better edges or anti aliasing. But when they really had time, it stretched far beyond PS2 and Gamecube. There were a group of developers on Beyond3D that talked about this years ago about how powerful the Xbox was by comparison.
I think PlayStation 2 is the best because it has 16 car colors, while the Xbox and PC have only 8 colors. Also just so you know, Driver 2 is not on PC, It’s only on PlayStation and Game Boy I think. A comparison of Driver Parallel Lines would be interesting.
The thing that brings down most PS2 games, is its lack of normal maps to achieve bumpy surfaces like bricks, every texture always looks flat without depth. Also loved that Don't Be a Menace clip, need to watch that movie again xD.

Are the PS2 and XBox consoles themselves using composite or RGB cables? PS2 looks like you're using composite while the XBox looks like it's using RGB or VGA, which alone makes a massive difference.
Is not a glitch in your capture software. You can clearly see screen tearing on the ps2 1:58 which means is running with unlocked frame rate so sometimes goes to 35-40

Ps2 version has framerate drops. Currently playing it. Its on the mission in Nice where you have to escape while shooting from back of van. Its noticeable drops but it shoots back back up. Also since they give you grenade launcher you dont actually see the grenade when shooting from distance but see the explosion. Also controls are stiff when shooting in consoles. Still though the game is amazing thats its even on ps2 playable from start to finish.
@@masterlee1988 The frame rate will dip massively, but usually only when there are load of cops and explosions happening at once. It's fine - usually that only happens in survival mode and at that point it just adds to the fun craziness.

PCSX2 is really annoying as an emulator, because if it's not a weeb game or a top 5 bestseller then it's broken. Driv3r is unplayable in PCSX2 currently, as it is not either.
Ok. So I remember having this game back when I was just 10 years old. I cannot believe what I'm seeing. I could have sworn that the graphics looked way better than what I am seeing now for the PS2 version. (I had a PS2 back then) I am just at a loss for words now lol.
Its more interesting if you compare Driv3r EU/US PS2 release to the Japanese PS2 release, as for some reason, the Japanese release has higher res textures.
Sadly, that’s never going to happen. Microsoft is only allowing original Xbox games that are backwards compatible with Xbox 360. Driver 3 is not backwards compatible with 360. So any game that is not backwards compatible with 360, will unfortunately never be backwards compatible with newer consoles. This is a shame because this means that some of my favorite original Xbox games will never be playable on the Series S/X and will forever be only playable on original Xbox. Some good games include: Crimson Sea, Dead to Rights II, Def Jam: Fight for NY, Destroy All Humans! 2, MechAssault, Midtown Madness 3, RalliSport Challenge 2, Shrek 2, Shrek Super Slam, TimeSplitters 2, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, etc will sadly never make it.

PC version is more buggy and it has many graphical issues, some broken lighting effects and cars use lower res textures than the console versions. XBOX has far too many pop up and rendering issues. I'd choose PS2 because it's the most "polished" of them all.
The PS2 is far glitchier than the PC version in my experience. I went back to it recently and was surprised at the difference. Just as an example, on my PS2 copy, cop cars will sometimes spawn on top of my car as I'm driving - that has never happened to me in the PC version.
We all loved this game BEFORE we played the GTA series, this was my first rated-M game at 5 years old or so. Parallel Lines was SO much better looking back, but even GTA 3 with its outdated controls STILL blows Driv3r away 🤣🤣
The PC port is last, but they for some reason used the pre-compressed PS2 textures instead of the source of said textures. The order is probably PS2-Xbox-PC (but the pc version is based on the Xbox version but with PS2 textures).
@@masterlee1988 I played both the PS2 and the PC version and seriously, the PS2 version is much better. The PC one is basically a crappy Xbox port with more bugs than the console versions. The PC controls, especially the mouse is terrible. Idk if the guy who made the video really played the game on PC at all, the mouse sensitivity is wayyyyy too high and changing it in the settings doesn't work for some reason. Also the city lightning effects at night are almost entirely absent on PC for some reason, when I played the PS2 one I thought I was looking at GTA 5. Also cars have more colors and YES, it is really noticeable as the PC version pretty much only has the bland ones. The PC version is by far the crappiest to play, too many graphical bugs that weren't in the console version (I mean just look at 4:15, that's your hair for the entire length of the game), the only good thing about it is that you can bump the resolution up. But hey this is still Driver 3 we're talking about, a game which had some HUGE potential but whose developers focused on useless stuff like swimming too much, then didn't have the time to properly polish it before Atari kicked it out the door. Good times are not guaranteed but it's still a Driver game.

After downloading Dtiver 3 I made a folder name it Games & put this in in another folder I got AetherSX2 on Android How to set it to Low Graphics settings. My game is lagging Time 2:02
My favourite version is the Game Boy Advance one. Why ? Because is a full 3D game with two BIG and dethailed cities that runs on a 2D machine here is why. Ok, the game isn't perfect ... but after a bit of prctice it become a playable, funny and impressive little game. P.S. And the developers have find the way to put such a big and complex game in just 8MB of space 😲

I‘m honestly always surprised about how much the OG Xbox was ahead of its time. Both in performance and as a console itself.

I'm curious to see how this looks on PCSX2 now. Running it on there at 3x it's native resolution can probably fix all of the jagged edges issues.
when you increase the resolution on PCSX2, framerate drops significantly in some games. it's not a good platform for comparison most times

I would think the differences are caused by them being different builds of the game. Hard to say which is the earlier build.

The cutscenes of the game look like a early ps3 game if only the cutscenes look like that in the gameplay

The PS2 version seems to run at a lower resolution. I think 512 x384 (or similar) was quite common on PS2 games

My favourite version is the Game Boy Advance one.
Why ?
Because is a full 3D game with two BIG and dethailed cities that runs on a 2D machine here is why.
Ok, the game isn't perfect ... but after a bit of prctice it become a playable, funny and impressive little game.
P.S. And the developers have find the way to put such a big and complex game in just 8MB of space 😲
