CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray (Jamie Foxx) breaks the news to his management at Atlantic Records that he's been offered an amazing record deal elsewhere.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career; among the highlights of that career are 12 Grammy awards and 11 R&B chart-toppers, such as "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road, Jack," "Georgia," "Doin' the Mess Around," and "Hallelujah I Just Love Her So." Also among the cast are Larenz Tate as Quincy Jones, as well as Regina King, Kerry Washington, and Clifton Powell. Charles' son, Ray Charles Jr. helped produce the film.

I like when Ray asks, "Can you match it?" A part of him knows they can't, and another part of him wishes they could.
The way they showed it in the movie, i think he was just saying that to say he gave them a chance.
Not at all. He's saying it's time to move on but I will hear you out strictly out of respect
This showed Ahmed to be a true friend to Ray. Disappointed, but still supportive and impressed by his business acumen as he is his talent as a musician.
It’s Ahmet but I agree.
It’s his fault. He taught Ray to go for the big money.
Ahmet and Ray remained friends after Ray went to ABC
Can't hate on Ray for what he did. To be a black musician in 1959 and get a better music deal than Frank Sinatra? Nuff said.
I am proud
Damn right!!!
That was a DEAL of a DEAL.
Any sane person would go that deal.
It's business!!
Yep. What Ray did was pioneering. Not even Sam Cooke did that!
I agree. And the actor that played Ahmet was In risky business he had a small part is Tom Cruise’s best friend and you got to give the guy credit he’s a good character actor almost 30 years in the business
@@rogerb1031 also played Booger in Revenge Of The Nerds
I really admired Ahmet for looking at the bigger picture and encouraging Ray to take the better offer, that's what you call humble....
And a true friend.
Besides Ahmet survived gracefully as stated in the video it's the 60s, he would sign Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, and many others. I'm sure Ahmet was cool with Ray leaving financially
True friendship
Lol did he have a choice
@blackway643 he absolutely had a choice how he reacted to Ray leaving. He could’ve been bitter and hateful for years, instead of accepting it gracefully and being happy for Ray.
Nothing personal.
It was only business.
And in business, you go for the best deal possible.
I thought when it's not personal, only business, that's when you... murder all your enemies ruthlessly?
Yawg moth What business are you doing?
@yawgmoth6568 Capitalism means cut throat competition! Competition is the best driving force behind capitalism. I know greed and exploitation have given capitalism a bad name; but it is the best economic system there is. You can't cry about someone taking a better deal elsewhere if you can't offer it!
HE GOT A 75/25 SPLIT AND THE MASTER! G.O.A.T!!!!!
SIC WILL PRODUCTIONS LLC what’s a master?
Owning the music for future uses and pay
Sotirios Spanos the Physical Tape
The original recordings that are on a record label the artist is signed to. Owning your masters means that in the future, if you want to re-release an album, or unreleased songs, YOU have the power and will get paid for it, and so will your family for generations to come. (This is in ADDITION to mechanicals, publishing and royalties.) An artist that has been able to buy back their masters (recordings) is remarkable fam.
Ohhh thanks gents
i truly wonder if Ray and Ahmet stayed friends after Ray left Atlantic. the film makes it seem like they had a special bond, beyond just business partners. i'd like to believe they would stay friends.
Joseph SchianodiCola Yes they remained friends. They probably somewhere now cutting it up you know
Atlantic fucked Ray, Check out the lawsuit that's going on between his kids....crazy
Yeah they died an interview in the 2000's
He couldn't stay faithful to his wife, you think he can be friendship material?
@@rasoulnelson2214 In addition Ray actually returned to Atlantic for a period from 1977-1980, and he actually returned to Atlantic as a guest artist twice, once to perform "Shake a Tail Feather" on the "Blues Brothers" soundtrack, and once to sing guest vocals on INXS's song, "Please (You Got That...)" off their album "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts."
Best biopic ever! Glad Jamie Foxx won that Oscar. RIP Ray
Astro no doubt the best music biopic so far in the 2000's I agree.
So true.
Definitely
*Walk The Line
But Ray is very good too
I own this movie and imo it’s the best biopic ever. Walk the Line is a close second tho.
Ahmet stayed loyal to everyone he ever saw anything in. Read Eric Clapton’s autobiography for further proof. For some reason, he saw a singer and artist in the guitar player. He was like this all the time.
The way Ray looks up at Ahmed and asked “Can you match it?”.....Man. Jamie Fox is genus
Ahmet has the unfortunate conundrum of being happy for his good friend and the grief of losing the best act he ever had. If he handled it in person like the actor did, than he really was a MAN.
True
Graham Nash said that the thing that set Ahmet apart from the other moguls was that besides being a great business man he was an actual music lover. He gave a lot of artists chances that other labels wouldn't because he liked what they did and believed in them. Crosby, Stills, and Nash auditioned at Columbia through Paul Simon and Apple in front of George Harrison and were turned down by both. Atlantic picked them up because Ahmet really liked them even though he wasn't sure they would sell. Many artists were fiercely loyal to him because of this.
spicy321 Seems like one of the few straight shooters in music history.
He Had Zep so..... Dont cry for him
This showed the true genius of Ray. Not personal, just business and only a damn fool would turn down a helluva deal like that out of misguided loyalty to a company that can't or won't match it to keep their most successful talent. Can you imagine how seemingly impossible it was for a black musician getting a better deal than Sinatra in the late fifties\early sixties? Ahmet was a real friend too because he knew that Ray would've been an idiot to turn that down. It's good to be loyal but never at the cost of your own well being or your family's well being.
When Booger says “I’m very proud of you” to Ray. That’s cinematic history.
He's a very underrated actor. Deserves more credit other than his old nerd character. Haha
Ahmed aint gaf about the money, he cared about Ray as a person. Thats why he’s a goat as well.
best portrayal by any actor of a musician in a movie ever...hands down
Taron Eagerton playing Elton John and especially Rami Malek playing Freddie Mercury were pretty damn good but Jamie Foxx KILLS it in this film
Leon playing David Ruffin.
It’s up there, for sure. Perhaps only equaled by Forest Whittaker’s portrayal of Charlie Parker in “Bird”.
I may be about 14 years late but I just realized the man playing Ahmet was Booger from Revenge of the Nerds.
I was wondering where i saw this guy, he looks good cleaned up
I never realized that, but since you mentioned it, I hear it in his voice. Learn something new everyday. Lol
Haha, I just figured this out too!
Atlantic got Zeppelin, so Ahmet managed ok. :-P
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Cream
Genesis
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Yeah they did well
Terry Stafford too.
Curtis is excellent on screen.
Juliana Brown In a big way!
They got Aretha in 1967.
One of my all time greatest movies.... so well done.
This is one great movie!
Love actor playing Ray!
I've A:LWAYS loved Ray's music since I was a lad. This really was an incredible movie about an incredible musician... I felt like I was there, every step of the way...
and a VERY well deserved Oscar for Jamie and the sound mixing... Should have been more.
Ray is an American Icon.
Thanks for all you left us Ray
You have to love Ahmet Ertegun's attitude here.....it's beautiful.....
One of my all time favorite films.... great movie.
Yeah this scene was sad for me because I liked these guys and was happy they gave ray a chance and ray made them alot of money as well
Atlantic records ended up doing great, signing Led Zeppelin and many other acts after this
They also got the stones, csny, and yes they did just fine
Miles davis and check corea
Ertegun was one of the best record execs ever; no surprise he lasted on top for better then 4 decades.
This movie was magical
Ray was a businessman doing business
Atlantic after this, come to real the frase that Ray said ‘you guys always find the best’ and it was. They find Led Zepellin, and the golden era of rock.
CAN YA MATCH IT????
U if fbk Ttg 😂😂
They could.
They just wouldn’t. Smh
@@MOBROOKS no they couldn't.
@@MOBROOKS Dont know anything about the money and business.
I know more about the music business than you ever will.
Do have any clue have many points.....
pardon me, I forgot I was responding to novices.
Do have any clue what percentage the average artist makes on each album sold?
I’m quite sure you don’t.
rip ray
This was sad, but he did what he had to
Richard Schiff is TOTALLY unrecognizable without the beard....
But you close your eyes and it's Toby!
I hadn’t seen this movie in so long and I couldn’t remember what happened to Ahmet. I’m glad they came to a close like this instead of how other musicians fell out with their old studios.
Richard Schiff is a damn good actor. The Lost World, I am Sam, The West Wing. Great talent.
"its a high hide"
@@agoodamerican614 does it work better than your satellite phone? Lol.
forget how great this screenplay is
To think, half the decade passes, and a young black girl ending her contract with CBS Records grabs Ahmet's attention. You could say he won her over by showing her some....RESPECT! 🇵🇷🇺🇸🤣😎
Ray Charles was an astute businessman. Many record labels will try to swindle artists out of their royalties, etc. Besides "reading the fine print and understanding it," it is a wise musician/singer that fully familiarizes themself with the music industry--how it works and how it can and will try to capitalize off of YOU. Example? Artists that died BROKE. What a shame.
was ray the only one in business to own his own masters??
I believe Elvis did too, but he was certainly not earning 75 cts out of a dollar on sales, that's the crazy stuff here. Even by today standards.
sasha tt Motley Crue got theirs back from Elektra
sasha tt Metallica and Drake
Sam Cooke as well
He was the first
"You guys always do find the best" yup, rays right. Led Zeppelin was with them during there early days
I can understand loyalty to a business and people that you work with but that only gets you so far because sometimes a person’s loyalty has to be to the dollar and whatever else that can get you get the most of it as long as you leave on the best of terms then I feel that there is nothing wrong with accepting something better Especially if the place you’re at currently can’t do more for you
I agree..when I was younger I naively believed that loyalty to the company will be rewarded but now I realize it's just business and your employer will let you go or screw you over in the name of business so in the end, you need to look out for yourself.
littlesongbird1 EXACTLY!
Business, never personal.
When i see this movie i dont see jamie i see ray gahdamn
Can you match it.
Cmon son. It’s business. Don’t be mad
EXACTLY!!! If someone gets a better deal and you can't at least match it, so be it! Congratulate that person and move on!
Always business never personal!
It’s not personal. It’s strictly business
Booger was hurt. 😟
Revenge of the nerds nice joke
Jamie was not playing Ray Charles in this movie. He WAS Ray Charles.
TREY's Signature> you have TREY TREY SONGZ signature. < I'm TREY> Atlantic RECORDS
Before Aretha Franklin & the Spinners, Donny Hathaway.
Atlantic's biggest acts were the black ones in the beginning the white acts came later on in the late 60s
Before the Jim STewart & Estelle AXton merge!
They always want to talk loyalty until it's time to get paid or until you're not making them money anymore.
Gift To You
Must be Toby Ziegler's dad
Charles DeMar 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its lester!!!
I especially like it when I see how sad Ray/Jaimie is when the guy's so mad at him.
This is not a pleasant thing to do, but Business IS business . .
He struggled and realized
Büyük adamsın Ahmet Ertegün
Ahmet's beard looks like he painted it on with a marker
Ray Charles sunglasses
Can you match it was the coldest 🥶
This is such an incredible deal that I am surprised it was offered. Not only Sinatra, but this was a better deal than what Michael Jackson and The Beatles had!!!
1. 🦄 2. 🐐 3. TREY
Cash on Delivery. He was cash. And they got delivery.
They set ray up
TREY
A younger co-worker said Ray Charles sucks. Then told me he likes tech9. I let him know that without Ray, Chuck, Bo, Richard and other great artists who fought 2 get their music 2 a broader audience u may have never heard of tech9
@ddjdd wfgggb I have 2 say I was proud that a couple of co-workers in the twenty something range help me defend Ray
Ray didn’t suck what wrong with your co worker lol. Forgot some young kids don’t like music like in the 60s but I 29 love ray charles music in Lil Richard in love tech 9 music idc only you make good music matter it rap are R&b in rock in even pop it good I will listen too it
Running To University
Is it a better deal????🤔🤔🤔
It's your deal...
cool
I'm still shopping around for a deal weighing my options. That Brittany deal is looking like the best deal...😂😂😂
He said Sinatra! Wowwwwwwww
Men don't chase they observe
Another Atlantic city NJ song Trey
The name TREY without SONGZ looks strong ...go see TREY
New music from TREY
Hunger
Can you match it?
It was because of that deal ray Charles was able to give each 1 of his twelve kids 1 million dollars at the time of his death, instead of Atlantic records sending their kids grand greatgrand kid s to college have trust funds ect of his royalties and masters
COIN
I am curious about how much Sinatra did get
Probably 50/50 but not Own the masters
How about we can do this the Ray way for Jamie to become the black African actor in the world has ever known! 😁
I’m not brightest man when it comes to number so can anybody give me an ideal of what 75/25% deal would look like today?
Take 1 dollar. Ray got .75 cents while the record company got the remaining.25 cents. So in other words Ray makes three times as much as the record company on record sales.
Mister Miggs only if you stupid
If his records sell for 5 million dollars, ray gets 3,750,000 and the record company gets the remaining 25 percent. Insanely great deal for ray.
No idea dude is pissed you were a smaller company before Ray came along and even stated did very well. So tells me yes it hurt Ray left however can and would find others.
A blind man making historiv deals thats amazing
*_*historic_**
Owning the name TREY; how? You can keep them recordings....
So what's the difference between Earl Hines and Art Tatum?
I turn captions off every video thenthe next video they are back on and take up the whole stupid phone screen. Wtf youtube
And about 8 years later, Atlantic sold out to Warner Bros.
Anybody know what type off hair cut ray had?
Not TREY SONGZ. Not TREY mclaughlin...just TREY
If you don't let me go as; TREY. I don't go at all. Lol Idk...let's try your other names; CLAUDE. No I don't want that one used..that way .m ...
25c better than nothing
Pretty sure Jamie Foxx kept his eyes closed the whole movie.
They actually surgically removed them for this film. Foxx has been blind ever since.
They had a special type of makeup for Jamie's eye lids to be closed shut the whole time while filming each scene.
He didn't actually they made a special mask to put over his eyes so he didn't have to close them the whole time and could look as blind as Ray
Why couldn’t they match the deal?
Streetsmart1984 didn’t have the money to honor his success
Also ABC Records offered Ray the rights to any recordings He did for them. When Ray left ABC in 1973, he took those master tapes with him.
Atlantic was an independent label staying in business by consistently delivering hits. ABC was a huge corporation with much more money at their disposal. They basically made little to no money in that contract for the prestige of having Ray Charles on their label.
Ray was a million times better than Sinatra
Your opinion.... and different music styles... so how was he "better" than Sinatra? Your comment proves you really don't know much about MUSIC.
Gtfo
Obviously they didn't really want him. Else they would have matched the deal.
Capcoor yes and no.
They were a small company competing against a giant. They simply did not have the money.
I'm almost shocked i have to actually tell you this.
They couldn't that was huge chunck.

What's wild but, cut from the movie. Was Ray went on to become the worst sniper in history. He kept making hit music but, not once did he complete a "hit".
Let's face it, Ray Charles only ever cared about Ray Charles.
The music business has always been known for f*cking over the artist. Especially back then, so was he to let the best record deal that any artist in history ever had, just pass him by?
