  • Four months into quarantine and I’ve been watching a LOT of medical shows. Most of them have actually done an episode surrounding how their hospital handles a viral outbreak. Today I’m diving into Scrubs Season 4 Episode 16, appropriately titled “My Quarantine”, to see how JD and the team handle a rumored outbreak of SARS.
    I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

      Not terribly long ago there was an article about cabin crew asking for a dr on a flight. One passenger stood up, she is an OB/GYN (from Houston? Can't recall the departure/arrival of the flight) and a black woman. They told her that they needed an actual dr, then there was something about her providing ID proving she's a dr. Then when a white guy offers his service (he works in the medical field but is NOT an MD) the crew never asked for proof from him, and he's who the crew chose to assist the passenger.

    That is so amazing to hear about your chief of medicine. Having worked in the medical field there are a lot of egos out there and sometimes docs can get too big from the britches as much dad would say. I respect all doctors for what they do without them our healthcare system would collapse but, there are docs out there who let it go to their head and it can really be off putting for patients. When docs are humble and don’t just give orders to the people below them allows patients to connect with their docs and be more receptive to treatment plans. I’m so glad he is teaching doctors which is even better because he is helping create more docs like him which is what we need.
    Love you Dr. Mike! Please connect with Jessica Kent and/or Christina Randle to discuss medical care in the prison system, I would love to see your take on it, especially for pregnant women and how they are treated throughout their pregnancy and delivery.

    I always assumed this episode was set during the SARS outbreaks, so that’s why it would be immediately on their mind. Same thing with people now and covid... if you have a fever, you’re immediately quarantined.

      Alex, great response, you are exactly right. At my hospital, if you have body aches you get covid isolation. SARS was a hot topic at the time, so to call what JD does in this scene ridiculous and what we are doing now as normal precautions is pretty arrogant.

    • @caitie226
      @caitie226 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would still be a little odd as the show is set in the US. He asked the patient if he had been to Hong Kong, where there was a lot of SARS, but never waited for the answer. Good to be cautious but not exactly comparable with COVID which is incredibly prevalent across the globe, particularly the US.
      I think you're right that that's where the show was coming from though, not to mention it's not actually meant to be taken very seriously!

    The show gets sillier as they move along, Some info about this episode:
    The girl with him is a girl that he was trying to impress
    The caging scene is a daydream which is common in the show. Also this was filmed when the first SARS was still being studied and the sudden diagnosis was done to move along the story. Great reaction video, I hope you keep watching the show

      Yeah this episode aired in early 2005 and was probably filmed during mid 2004, about a year after the initial SARS pandemic was brought under control. There was another, smaller, outbreak in China in 2004 though so it could be referencing that but I think it was them trying to be a little topical in the writing room without realizing that it would be months (at least) between the episode being written and the episode actually airing

    This thing about treats in hospitals is also true in the UK. The NHS runs on cake, no joke. I was maintenance and you could go into almost any ward, look behind desks and in cupboards, all over the nurses station, wherever. Just box after tub after bag after giant box of cakes and sweets. Sometimes you couldn't even go through a department without being force fed cakes by the staff.
