Relaxing Winter Camping in a Windstorm

- This week's video, I'm bringing you to Greer Lake Campground in the Crow Wing State Forest. It is near Crosslake, Minnesota. I got off work Friday and saw the weather forecast was not looking good for outdoor activities. Saturday was calling for 30 mph winds with gusts up to 40. There had been multiple guesses of snow totals. I think by Saturday night, we picked up 3 inches of heavy, wet, sticky snow. Staying warm in the camper is not an issue as long as I have propane. Saturday night, I was awoke by the sound of my refrigerator beeping. Once again, I ran out of fuel in my primary tank. Thankfully, I have a 20-pounder on reserve in the fuel cabinet. It's about that time of year when I will be carrying a 3rd tank as well.
Ice fishing on Sunday was uneventful. I'm going to have to spend a full day on the ice and visit a lake that I'm familiar with. One of the big problems with fishing on the channel is dedicating enough time to fishing and not worrying about camera angles and content. I will pull fish through the ice this season. I promise that! I'm still considering putting out my ice shack near the house.
Some people have been asking for snowstorm videos. I can guarantee I'll be in the camper during this winter's storms.... as long as it lands on a Saturday or Sunday.

The funeral hotdish recipe:
2lbs ground beef
1 diced onion
1 green pepper
1 can whole kernel corn
1 large can stewed tomatoes
1 can tomato soup
2 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
a few cloves of garlic , I didn't have any so I used garlic powder.
a squirt of ketchup to taste and/or
a few tablespoons of tomato paste
a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste.

Im sorry my regular closing is missing from this weeks video. For some reason I received a copyright claim against the closing song thats been used in every single video.
I provided the proper documentation showing I have the licensing rights to the song. But the company continued to dispute the claim. My last option was to see legal counsel or trim out the last 20 seconds. So I'll say it here.

I agree!! That company took about 300 bucks out of my pocket! All because of the last 20 seconds of the video. After 2.5 years, the videos are coming close to paying for the weekend....now it's gone. There is nothing I can do about it. Epidemic Sound provided me with someone to contact right away if it happens again. But that doesn't help this time. I completely understand why 99.9% of TH-camrs have sponcered videos. It's almost impossible to count on advertising revenue alone.

I know you’re concerned about losing those who helped get you this. However, I think I’ve said it before…you’re true followers/fans/YT friends will stay by your side and support you!

The "No Agenda" podcast does a value for value model. They put their effort into the show and if listeners find value in what they produce then they can contribute time, talent or treasure back. Set up a Patreon account. People already send cards to you and so forth. I think a lot of people would love to chip in a few bucks to say thank you for the value you bring to them every Tuesday. It would help you be less reliant on TH-cams harsh judgements and I doubt a single one of your regular viewers would begrudge you for having an easy way for them to say thanks for all you do. Everybody knows you're not begging or demanding anything from us.

I 100% agree with the quality of sleep in the camper. I sleep like a baby when I'm out in mine, and always wake up more refreshed than at home.

@Kenny of All Trades, what drone do you use? That grub made me hungry.
I use the DJI Mini 2. Walmart had it on a rollback a few months back for 249 dollars. The current model is the Dji Mini 4. That looks like an impressive drone. The Mini 2 is a great basic drone.
Nothing I enjoy more than wrapping up in a fuzzy blanket in front of a warm fireplace watching you brave the wind and cold! I never have much luck I’ve fishing! That funeral hot dish looks amazing, definitely going to try it next week! Thanks for taking us along on your adventures!

It’s Tuesday…another Kenny video to watch. A couple of things I really enjoy…you love all kinds of weather and watching you make your simple hearty meals. When most “campers” look at the forecast and cancel their plans if it looks iffy, you tend to thrive in the solitude and peace that adverse weather brings. Thanks for what you do…us couch potatoes live vicariously through your weekly adventures. Have a nice Christmas with the family and we’ll see you when you’re back in the woods….
P.s. while ice fishing, instead of jigging, have you used “tip-ups” and fished a bunch of holes at once or is that not allowed in your State?
Great question! In Minnesota, we are only allowed two lines in the water. If I get the house up I'll jig inside and put a sucker minnow on a tip up. I'd love to pickle a northern.

As Kenny walks out of the camper, says it's dark outside. 'Let's go check out the the lake". I literally was shaking my head and saying "Noooooooooo", outloud. I thought, this it what it means when they say women live longer. Pitch black. Walking in 22° windy weather towards a lake covered in snow. Then "Let's go check out the ice". All I thought about was that poor food in the oven will not get eaten because Kenny broke through the ice, in the dark, with no life saving equipment for the "just in case".
I hope to stay here for a long time making these videos. I really appreciate your concerns. I will try to keep safe!

I've been close a couple of times, but I've always made it home. I had a break down a few winter back. I was stuck in a campground 100 miles from home. It was -25 outside. I was able to limp the truck into a campsite. It took a few hours of working on it, but I got the truck up and running. That was an experience.
I had a breakdown on the road a few years back. I was ice fishing in that video too. I had to get a flatbed to pick up the camper and get me home.

Awesome effort on fishing ! I fished a couple days ago with a cool front headed our way. Figured the fish might be biting , they were ! Sand bass were tearing it up ! Can't tell you how many times I go out and catch nothing but the wonderful feel of being at the waters edge . It truly is my solace from the troubles of this world . . . . Merry Christmas ! The last time i went ice fishing, 1972, the group of us caught 120 trout, bluegill and crappies. The sun came out and we were in short sleeves, also got a good sunburn that day. Thanks for the ride along. Always enjoy it.

That's the plan! I'm thinking about putting my ice shack on the lake. It hasn't been out in a few years. Before the channel, I would spend a lot of time in that shanty. Maybe I can incorporate that into a camping video.

I'm still using the same camera and editing software, but the recording process is finally getting easier for me. It's taken a while, but I'm able to imagine what my final video will look like as I'm recording. I've still got so much to learn.

I was coyote hunting on Sunday and it was a beautiful morning.
My goto for attire for winter hunting is long underwear, no pants and my coveralls. Super warm and comfortable all day.
Any day of fishing is better than a day at work.

My brother told me in order to stay warm at night in the camper, sleep in your underwear. 👙 (closest thing to underwear). I did and it works.

I have heard of “funeral potatoes “, but never “funeral hotdish”. Funeral potatoes are a Utah thing.
I kinda felt bad for you sitting out on the lake eating a cold sausage, (with NO gloves on!) until you reassured us that was better than a good day of work.
The red night was pretty freaky, but kinda cool too.

I wish the camera could have captured how odd and creepy that red landscape felt. It was still windy, and I was working on supper, or I would have went out side. I'm sure it would have been a beautiful sunset if the sky's were clear. But it felt like Mars had frozen over.

I think you are in too deep of water. Crappie may be at 15’ to 20’ around cover. That’s what I would be looking for. Your bass, pike and muskys may 30+ ft deep. Great video though. The funeral hot dish looked pretty tasty.

Hello Kenny... From another Minnesotan... your hot dish looks good..I have one for you to try..it's been in my family of hunter's for 55 years.. Hunters sloppy joes.
I challenge you to make it.. it tastes even better the next day
Best sloppy joes..ever !!
1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 yellow onion diced and sauteed
Brown the hamburger..and drain excess fat out of the pan
Add .
1 heaping cup of ketchup
1 heaping tablespoon of yellow mustard
1 tablespoon of Worcestershire
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
1 heaping tablespoon of brown sugar..
Let's simmer on the stove until it becomes consistent of sloppy joes you may want to add a little water and just let it cook for a while it tastes ungodly gorgeous beautiful and taste even better the next day being in the fridge overnight

Hey Kenny! Sorry to bug you... started my day with your videos as usual and I saw where you worked the sugar beet harvest..... I'm semi- retired and I work a few different jobs each year. What do you like about the sugar beet job and would you recommend it for a 63 year old truck driver? I still love to work and even more, I love to try new adventures so I'm curious what you think about it.

The job was fine. It was an experience I always tried to try. I had a break between jobs. I left the PD and was starting a new position with the state. I'm glad I did it.
Anyone can do the job as long as you can stand for 12 hours straight. It's easy work. I was offered a position maintaining the piling machines. It was right up my alley. As the days went on, I was able to step into all the positions and help give people their breaks.
With driving experience, you would be hired by any of the farmers in the area hauling beets from the field to the piling station.. They drive long shifts but make better money and they stay out of the elements.
If you are able to keep pushing a broom in cold rainy weather for 15 to 20 days, you will make money. I think our long stretch lasted 18 days.
Multiple young people walked off the job within the first 10 dsys. All the folks in the age range between 40 to 65 realized the job was temporary, and staying to the end gets you a nice little bonus check at Christmas time.

Please be careful on that ice when all alone! That makes me nervous just watching! Don’t you worry about pouring boiling water down your pipes when it’s that cold. I would think it would cause a crack in one of your lines. But you know better than me!!
Thanks for the comment. You are right about pouring water down the lines. I have a septic tank I drain the gray water into when I get home. I fill the trap with RV antifreeze before I head back home. Otherwise, like you said, I could break a line.

I use an Allpowers power station. I have 3500 watt hours of power. It's enough to last all weekend running the furnace, coffee pot, and computer. I also carry a generator just in case I need it. In the summer, running out of power is not a big deal. But when it gets super cold, it can be dangerous. Thanks for watching.

Crosslake is where my good friends have a cabin. His grandfather actually built it. The stone fireplace is so beautiful. Beautiful area, even in the winter.

@@KennyOfAllTrades how does the truck camper do in below zero weather? Is it easy to heat and does it keep the heat in?
@rudycarlson8245 It stays warm in really cold temps. I've had a few videos last winter where I was out in -25 degree temps. I'm able to keep it at 65 - 70 degrees inside. It will go through a 20-pound tank in 2 days in those temperatures. The floor stays cold. You need to keep socks on. A fan would help to circulate the air. I don't have water in the tanks in the winter. The basement of the camper is insulated. There is a factory fan to keep that area warm, so a person can keep water in the tanks. I've done it before, but the cost of fuel and constant power to keep the basement fan running is substantial. It is a challenge and takes constant supervision. There is a big difference between a "four seasons" rated truck camper and a standard model. But just because a camper says it's four seasons rated doesn't mean it can handle -20 to -40 without modifications. I did a video showing my modifications 2 years ago. You can tell I was new to TH-cam, but it's still has great info.

Lol. That's true in more then one way! This video got a copyright strike against it for the same song I've played in all of my 130 videos. So now I won't make my fuel costs back on this video. This is why I still work 45 hours a week and keep TH-cam as a hobby. Nothing is guaranteed in life....especially TH-cam and fishing!

On those buddy heater you've got to keep the gas bottle warm if not the gas will freeze up shove the bottle in a wool sock to keep it warm
