    this was amazing. He directly addressed the issue of calling it memory and how confusing it is.

    Your video is one of the best I have seen about storage versus memory. I am a retired teacher, and I know that the more senses a person engages, the better the lesson. Comparing computers to woodworking was brilliant!

    Thank you for the analogy. What I know about computers fits just outside of a thimble, but I need to work on computers with clients who have sustained brain injuries. This helps us both to understand it better so we can move onto the next thing ....we don't understand. Lol, seriously appreciated and I will save this video to demonstrate since visuals like you provided are so helpful in our situation. 🙂

    Thanks man! I'm a little out of the loop between storage and memory, and how we went from hard drives to SSD, but your explenation simplified it to where I feel confident in how I should chose a new laptop.
    Now, can anyone tell me how much storage is good? My current has 237 gb and most of what I see online searching has been around 512 or higher. Heard 1 TB is best if you can get it.

    Thank you so much, I was always so confused. My Mac only has 8 GB of memory, and 500 GB of Storage, and when I’m editing (I use Adobe after effects) it always ends up using around 6-7 GB of of Memory, and then it freezes and I’m forced to restart it. This helps me understand what’s happening, I pretty much am trying to fit a really big tool on a smallish bench, the tool can easily fit on the shelf, but the bench is too small. Also I’ve been thinking of getting a PC at some point, would you say it’d be more beneficial to buy/build a PC that has a good amount of RAM, or just buy more RAM for my Mac… because I’ve also used 490 GB out of my 500 GB storage 😂 I have a 5 TB hard drive that I’ve started using, but overall it feels like my Mac is just struggling with what I’m trying to use it for

    • @nerdyneighbor
      @nerdyneighbor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooo! I don't play the Sims personally, but I know people who do. If you play with lots of mods, you'll want lots of RAM and lots of storage. At least 1TB of storage, and I would say at minimum 16GB of RAM. Probably more, if you can afford it.

    ahh so I only really need to upgrade my ram! No need for the ssd since i have about 1tb hard drive? This is for work btw , the computer scan said i didnt have enough ram! Thanks

    • @nerdyneighbor
      @nerdyneighbor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, well, it depends! Sorry I didn't get to this sooner. If you're running Windows 10 or 11 and the computer is feeling slow, two things could be the issue. It could be your RAM (if you only have 4gb, you'll want 8 or 16 instead), or it could be the hard drive. Old hard drives (HDD or "mechanical" drives) are SUPER slow. Upgrading to an SSD would make a massive difference. So I would just make sure you check both the drive and the RAM.

  • @That-FedEx-DC10
    @That-FedEx-DC10 ปีที่แล้ว

    When the RAM is cleared without saving its wiped out and if saved then it’s sent to the Hard Drive/SSD?

    • @nerdyneighbor
      @nerdyneighbor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Theoretically, yeah. However, most apps have an "auto-save" feature in which changes are written to the SSD so frequently, that it's not nearly as common to lose data that way as it used to be.
