I think people make the assumption that because Championship/League One>[insert crappy domestic league here], they assume the players will be better. What they fail to grasp is that the journeymen and fringe players in Greece or Czechia or wherever, generally play in the top teams in their league, and are used to at least trying to play good dominant football. Every Irish player seems to be scrapping for their lives to keep their place in teams that are scrapping for their lives.

Surely the ability to pass the ball and not cough up possession cheaply is the minimum standard for a professional player. Your average League one or even two player in England would be expected to demonstrate those basics on a consistent basis. Sure, I know this is international level and the opposition are better but so much of the Ireland's failures are self-inflicted. Many of the mistakes are not from opposition pressure but just rampant basic errors. These guys would not be playing professionally if they brought this casual approach into their clubs. Some of the performances have been so bad you would get the impression that the international games were being treated as a kind of break from the weekly professional demands of their clubs. My feeling is that many of the players don't feel they have to put in a shift. Is that a reflection on Stephen Kenny ?

No i disagree, kenny got the job because he promised that Ireland would go out and attack and hopefully play good football, Kenny hasn't really done that. Last nights match, Ireland passed the ball from side to side then back to the keeper. That is the managers fault, look at the French match, Ireland sat back and defended in their own box for most of the match until France scored then Ireland went out to attacked and played some good football and almost scored. Your not going to score goals defending in your own box. That is the fault of the manager. If we are going to loose, at least Ireland should do is try to play attacking football instead of boring defending

Very frustrating. Performances this nation in football couldn't win any game I wouldn't be surprised if Gibraltar won on Monday. We need a new manager that actually has good footballing experience and knows what he's doing not Stephen Kenny. He is out of his depth. It's time for him to go. They have no fight in football no ambition for Ireland's football team. I feel mostly sorry for the people who go to see them play. Shambolic performance by Ireland against Greece tonight it will be 12 years since European championship qualification it will be 24 years without world cup qualification. We need a change ASAP.

    • @RyAn-sj7ck
      @RyAn-sj7ck ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thing about Kenny is there's nothing wrong with how he wants the team to play but he hasn't been able to translate it well to the players. They've no understanding of each other out there. You see lads in loads of space and making good runs and nobody picks them out. And when we do make the passes most of our players lack quality to execute them or the lad on the receiving end gives a poor touch. The decision making is horrendous and the quality is poor. I've also had an issue with almost every line up Kenny has put out. If the FAI wants to continue this development they need a better and more experienced manager. Kenny's work doesn't have to go to waste but he doesn't seem to have it in him to get us to the next step either.
Also calling up Jamie McGrath who just finished BOTTOM of the Scottish Prem... yes that shite league his team finished last, is a joke and he's only in the squad because Kenny managed him at Dundalk. He had some lively performances when Kenny brought him in a couple years ago I'll give him credit but he hasn't developed since.
Few others in the squad as well who shouldn't be there. I know we haven't a lot of good options but there are some lads you could easily drop in the place of others
Anyway sorry for the long comment I just need to vent I'm so annoyed by this team

This country does not deserve football success for several reasons:
    1. We are not really interested in football. Soccer is less popular than Gaelic football, hurling and rugby as a spectator sport. Other countries don't have this opposition to contend with.
    2. There are two international football teams on this island. There should just be one, as in rugby. Fans of the Republic of Ireland don't want an all-Ireland team, which would have a far better chance of qualifying for the finals of tournaments.
    3. Many other countries are fanatical about football. Irish fans are not. They only travel to matches for the 'craic' as they call it. For them, a match is only a means of working up a thirst for the pub afterwards. They are not devastated when they lose. They'll party no matter what.

The Kenny IN supporters think thay if you disagree with Kenny being appointed as manger is somehow saying we go back to the old way of kicking up the pitch and hope for the best far from it. All the talk about possession football from Kenny was the panacea for a new era for Eire, now we see the results (the game is about results in the end nothing else matters) Kenny's complete lack of know how at this level is appalling, yes we play possession in our half boringly knocking it across back and forth while the opposition say let them have in their own half we wait and play a pass move game as Greece did very effectively, their is little or no product at the end of most of our movements. Stats show we depend on set pieces and defenders scoring, we do have good not great but good players of that there is no doubt, we just need some honesty from those in charge and admit Kenny never had the credentials to manage at international level apart from under 21s ( a different level and no comparison ).

We need to get real about Irish football. We're the only country in Europe that doesnt have a proper league. We used go get away with it when english premier league clubs only had players from UK and Ireland so we'd get a few playing in the prem. Thats never going to happen again because the premier league is so global now. We need to put a 10-15 year plan in place and become a proper footballing nation with a proper league. Where not as small as we make out either. Same pob as Denmark, Norway, Scotland all with decent leagues.

Greece could have had 4 or 5. It was a very poor Irish performance. Sadly we just don't have the players. Eavan Ferguson might become a top player but the passing from the midfield was shocking. Kenny is not really up to international management. Can't remember Irish football being this bad.

All of these players are professional footballers, so why do they not work on their technical abilities. It looked like they were afraid when they had the ball, and they invariably gave it back to the Greeks. Am i naive to think that an Irish player can have the same technical abilities as other countries? Is there something in the genetics of an Irish footballer that prevents him to feel comfortable when in possession?

Folks. We've been punching above our weight now for 20 years. 2002 was the last EXCELLENT Irish team. Euro 2012 was a shambles. 2016 papered over cracks to a point. We don't have the quality. We've barely any top level players, who play in top divisions - week in, week out.
This result is no surprise. I wouldn't go bashing the manager. He's trying to change our way if playing. It has worked in some games. But we have absolutely no skill, and quality in midfield. It's just not gonna happen until at LEAST.....2028.

Not sure the manager should catch all the blame. We do not have players who play in top teams or even regularly. The skill level is relatively low. We all knew that this campaign is too big and a big task. But ok,it’s good to go to training camp and all of the things you would like to do,so questions will be asked about why it was necessary to go to training camp, what roles were they, what were they trying to do?. I just think we need to understand what roles are the players suppose to do,why did they do differently?.Where’s the passion?.Where’s our tackle?.How did we play slow?.Why didn’t we substitute for earlier?.We’re underdogs,we’re not going to be Brazil,
at the end of the day,it’s a result business, and you’ll be judged by your performance and not winning games,so this is where Stephen is at the moment, he’s out of his depth,I just don’t like watching his interviews and press conferences, he seems to me bored and tried,he’s a league of Ireland manager at his best,I thought when he decided to become the new manager of Ireland,he’ll be good,Slovakia was an opportunity to go to the euros,we didn’t win because of penalties, we should have won, same as Portugal,I gave Stephen a chance to prove he could be good but the problem is he thought we’re going to win,a historic, well, I think Stephen is wrong and we need a manager who needs to look at the midfield, midfield is still a problem,we all know that, we all gave Molumby and Cullen praised for their performance but last night showed everything and Stephen should be a manager of under-21,he was fantastic, the game against Italy was a moment to never forget,it’s evident, some of performances were brilliantly and enjoyable but tonight’s game was a reflection on not only how bad we played, but the reality was we didn’t learn our lesson to tackle, the pressure, give the ball away so many times so this is why Greece were confident, the crowd knew it’ll be win and Greece had got spaces, where Doherty and Smallboune were, easy to the left-back of Greece they were brilliant from start to finish,it’s evident to me,the players who the manager selected,it tells you everything about hardly playing their clubs, they have to play and move on,let’s face it,club managers see different ways and stick with.

@@jackmurphy6864 I look it at it like this, whatever you think about Ireland not having a decent team is all well and good. But with a squad of similar standard of players, McCarthy left Kenny with a very good shot of getting to the last Euros. There was only Slovakia and Northern Ireland he had to beat. The FAI have done everything to get the public onside with this man but I just don't think he is able to cut it. Who have we beaten under him. The best was probably Scotland in a Nations League game, other than that it's been the Gibraltar's and Azerbaijan's of this world. And in many of those games, we've struggled at times to put them away as well. That is down to coaching too so while it may not be entirely his fault, every good manager knows that he has to take responsibility, no matter the circumstances.
In fact I remember Azerbaijan coming to Dublin and teaching us a lesson in how to play, a team consisting of players that are no better than the Turkish 2nd Division giving us a lesson? That's why I don't get the focus on possession football when we can't even outplay teams we on paper should be beating comfortably.
