The movie that spawned one of the most enjoyable sci-fi shows of my childhood. Always love me some Stargate. As good as Kurt Russel is, Richard Dean Anderson took the character to such a lovable, charming level it's impossible to not adore him.
Edit: You should check out SG-1, it's infinitely more fun than the movie, they get up to so much good stuff it's a blast. As for fav character in the movie, has to be little Scaara, the kid O'Neill (Two L's!) gave his lighter to.

Good movie that launched one of the best Sci Fi franchises. Stargate Sg-1 is a great series, that is pretty unique for being set in modern times. Though apart from the cast and crew who are all amazing and the chemistry between the cast is phenomenal, what really sets it apart is the attention to real world science and mathematics, which is very impressive for a show dealing with entirely theoretical physics. Also, the humor cannot be over emphasized, it's perfect! With just the right blend of nods to other series and shows, wit, the self aware and self deprecating humor, the sarcasm and sass all mixed just right.

    • @michaelbreidenbach2834

And, unlike other series, the characters don't forget their experiences from week to week. So if they encounter a similar situation or scientific problem in a new episode, they reference what they did in an earlier episode and explain why it won't work like that this time. Probably the best sci-fi show outside of Star Trek of the 1990's.

"What is it with Egyptians and cats? Why cats?"
In Egyptian mythology cats are the guardians of underworld who keep the dead from coming back to life - its why we don't have to worry about zombie outbreaks anymore. More practically for a people who preserved their dead, and believed the spirit could return to its corpse to check in on loved ones, cats kill rodents who would eat the preserved bodies.

To honor these treasured pets, wealthy families dressed them in jewels and fed them treats fit for royalty. When the cats died, they were mummified. There is also evidences that cat farms existed jut to breed and kill cat so members of high society could be buried with them.

Also, the first couple of seasons of SG-1 (about 5 seasons I think) were produced for Showtime, so they have a decent effects budget, while still reusing assets form the film. Stargate is my favorite "star" franchise, and like with all other reactions, I like when people like what I also like, so we can all like it together. Doesn't even matter if you'd watch the series for the channel or just in private.
If you choose to though, I feel like I need to point out that the show was still trying to find its "voice" for the first half of the first season.

Charlie _was_ the focus or a significant plot point or reference in several episodes (Cold Lazarus, The Devil You Know, Window of Opportunity, Unnatural Selection...), as well as Stargate: Continuum, and Jack O'Neill (two ls) was shown in other episodes to be clearly still heavily influenced by his son's death, though by that point the trauma wasn't as recent as Jack O'Neil (one l)'s in this film, and he'd mostly gotten over his suicidal tendencies...

You will love SG1 picks up a year after the film, the actors are recast but they play their parts really well and the show really expands on the universe. There are subtle retcons though but well explained.
Ra's previous host belonged a race called the Asgard who are enemies of the Goa'uld (Ra's parasitic race). You saw his Asgardian Host in this film. Ra is a serpent symbiote that attaches onto the brainstem and fully controls the host's body. The reason Ra took a human host is because the Asgard race were a dying ancient race which were clones.. copies of copies of copies.

The TV show is enormous fun & very entertaining. Like old Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea in the 60's, the two movie leads of O'Neil & Jackson were recast and other new characters brought in for the TV adaptation.

SG-1 was an incredible series the first 8 years. Richard Dean Anderson as Colonel O'Neill was a perfect casting choice. It kinda went a bit hokey the last two. I think it had to do with the villains of the show at that point. There were also several tv movies based on SG-1. Atlantis was a good series. It picked up momentum from season 2 on. For me it was based on introducing a certain character. Universe was ok but lacked momentum to really get started considering it was the THIRD series. The production should have taken off from episode 1 since they already had TWO successful series under their belts. SG-1 and Atlantis are must see series.

SG-1 was great. It had the old Star Trek feel in the beginning where every episode was a new planet and a new adventure. Later the over arching stories were fun too. SG: Atlantis was a bit of a disappointment. In the first episode they describe Atlantis as a city the size of Manhattan so I imagined episodes where they would explore the city and uncover mysteries. But unfortunately they just copied the formula from SG-1 and only very rarely did we see a room other than the 3 the show typically took place in. SG: Universe was train wreck. Good idea but it was so poorly executed it was as if every episode was written by a different person who didn't know any of the characters and didn't know anything about the show. And whomever thought up the idea of the "sex" stones should be psychoanalyzed. Basically, a person on the ship and a person on Earth would touch a set of stones and swap consciences. Then the person now on Earth would take that body and go have sex with it often gay sex with a straight person or vise versa. And nobody every once questioned how creepy that was. There would just be these scenes where some strange person would knock on some woman's door and say, "I'm your ex-husband Tom. I'm on a spaceship thousands of light-years away. I only have 24 hours to use this man's body to have sex with you so let's get busy." And there was never any consequences or pay off for this. It was just creepy for now reason.

    • @10thdoctor15

Atlantis is my favourite, definitely not a disappointment. The reason they didn't explore the city very often was power and time (and because they couldn't get too powerful too soon for the story). Most of the show was written by the same half a dozen people.
