It plays into the Egyptian ideas of a second life after death, mummies, burial chambers with stuff to take with them, etc. It's not expressly mentioned in the movie, but it is a very clever touch that shows someone put real thought into the worldbuilding of the story.
It's almost as the old Egyptian pharaohs, after Ra was driven out, tried to copy the concept but did not understand it to make the sarcophagus work again. The show based on this is pretty good. They established that Ra was just one of a pantheon, the Stargates were a network, and that not all the soldiers working for the gods were there by choice. Just the idea of the Stargate network allowed for dozens of possible stories as you could just make up a new planet and plant a Stargate there.

17:53 - There are 38 symbols on the stargate. In the movie cannon if you just needed to put the symbols in alignment you really only need to try 38 times. And odds are it would not take 38 attempts, especially if 6 of them cannot be used again. I know that would be tough to do with an enemy occupying the position, but it's not technically impossible.
Yeah, George. We all agree that you and Simone should react to the tv show. STARGATE. 😂😂 George, you said you were going to possibly do THE X-FILES also. So, start throwing in some episodes of both shows in-between movie reactions.
The show is great. Longest running sci fi show and mostly filmed in Vancouver. Michael Shanks plays Dr.Jackson in the show and he does the character so well.
The TV show develops the mythology and and history really well. It has it's flaws but the quality (and likability) of the main characters together with the world-building really works.
French Stewert I believe is the guy from Third Rock. Great 80s sitcom that also starred John Lithgow as the alien in charge. He was hilarious! And the kid alien is a big name now even though I can't myself remember it! He was in "The Dark Night Returns" as the young good cop "Robin" standing in the batcave at the end and he was also in "Looper" with Bruce Willis.
Since you enjoyed the film so much, it would be cool to see ye react to the pilot for the TV show as well. It does a pretty good job following on from this, and laying the groundwork for a show that would run for 10 seasons. And once they get a few episodes in, there's good chemistry among the main cast. Like any of the network tv shows of that time, there are some ropey episodes, but overall its pretty solid, and there are some really great episodes (and some very good sci-fi ideas explored along the way). Edit - having looked at the episode list for season 1, it has a rough start after the first 2 episodes (3,4,5 are bad, 6 is decent). But then really picks up big time from episode 7 on.
I remember the pilot having some full frontal nudity (almost dropped my chewing gum as a kid watching the series after the movie), but that stopped right after that.😅
@@Vohaul86 It seems weird now that it was originally aired on Showtime (which explains them allowing the nudity in the pilot) before moving to the Sci-Fi channel. I don't associate Stargate with showtime at all even though they each broadcast 5 seasons of it.
I love all the "aliens gifted this to us" talk in the beginning 😆. Stargate is my favorite Sci-Fi universe. This movie is criminally underappreciated. SG-1 is PEAK Sci-fi, a mixture of STTOS and DS9. The world and concept is great and the characters are fantastic. Should at least react to the pilot, Children of the Gods, it's basically a movie.
The Stargate series are my guilty pleasure. Anytime I need something for background noise, I put on SG-1 or Atlantic. Grew up on them airing on Sci-Fi before it was Syfy. Absolute classics.
I saw this movie in theaters a couple of time back in 94. The "going through the gate" sequences were amazing on the big screen. As much as I enjoyed the movie I didn't think much about it afterwards. It wasn't until years later that I found SG-1. It was one of the few series available back in the very early days of Hulu (when it was still free) and I binged my way through season after season, then spinoff after spinoff. I might be one of the few who wishes SG-U got a longer run.
Not just a show spawned from it, a 10 season show, with a 5 season spinoff show, and a lesser watched 2nd spinoff with 1-2 seasons as well. Its the lesser known science fiction Star franchise after Wars and Trek. I was a massive fan of the show, I have all of SG-1 and Atlantis on dvd and dust em off every couple years
Honestly he's gonna fucking hate it here. I could give a pass on the lack of every modern service and technology because he's such a dweeb maybe he doesn't care about any of that, but the thing he's most dweeby about is writing of ancient cultures and THERE'S ONLY ONE CULTURE HERE AND THEY OUTLAWED WRITING FOR 2000 YEARS! I guess he can make up for the variety and depth of research possibilities he would've gotten on Earth with sex, community organizing, and dying at a ripe old age of like 48 or something :P
You mentioned the Ancient Aliens theory stuff. This was directly lifted from those stories and "theories". If you watch the DVD extras for this movie, you can find the guy Erich von Däniken who started it all with the book Chariots of The Gods in 1968. It even has the famous "Aliens" meme guy "Not saying its aliens, but its aliens" in the extras too. You can find the clip from the extras here on YT if you search for it.
And a pretty singing voice as well. Someone had a lot of good fairies around their crib when they were born. Oh yes... Hang on, does crib still mean the same thing? Perhaps that devastating shot about 3rd Rock being a really old comedy thing was well-deserved. Gloom.
"It's from a really old sitcom, called Third Rock from the Sun…" ouch Simone, way to make us early millennials feel ancient 😂 Really channeled Peter Parker "really old movie called Alien" there
Did you notice ? Daniel is called "Jackson" by O'Neil the entire movie, but at the very last second, right before stepping back into the Stargate, O'Neil calls him "Doctor Jackson", showing how Daniel earned the man's respect through the adventure.
Don't worry guys. The kid with the Earth Helmet didn't die. In the book, the helmet came flying off his head and rolled down the ramp but the kid himself just got knocked to the left and landed in the sand with the ramp offering full cover. 😎 26:15
Most of Roland Emmerich's films start with a conspiracy theory and then he reverse engineers a plot around it. For example, Area 51 and alien abductions feature in the movie Independence Day, this film revolves around the idea that humans worshipped aliens as gods and aliens built the pyramids, and 2012 was about how the world was supposed to end in 2012.
One of my favorites. Super happy to see yall watch it. ive seen the shows and its not for everyone but if you enjoy the characters it can really be a fun journey.
Love that you two checked out this movie! I really think you'd enjoy the SG-1 series, and not a lot of reactors have gotten to the series, I think it would go down very popular. They made some slight changes here and there, and really flushed out the lore, and personally one of my favourite things about the series is seeing how far humanity ends up going by the end of it (which directly leads into Stargate Atlantis), along with the enemies (familiar and new) and allies made along the way. A lot of very interconnected episodes that reference and build off each other, like a good book.
Stargate SG-1(10 seasons), Stargate Atlantis (5 seasons), and Stargate Universe (unfortunately only got 1 season but was an excellent show), all spawned from this movie. The Stargate universe is really good and you guys should watch it, whether you react to it or not.
Now you guys have to do the series cause it's so good I know you'd love it. Yes, its long, but it didn't last that long for nothing. Heck, to this day we (at least me) fans are still hoping for a comeback.
There is so much more to the "stargate universe" lore that this movie doesnt even begin to dive into . You two should really watch SG1 and Atlantis ..... its alot but im here for it
You need to watch the season premiere of the series which is two parts which now is in movie format on line that continues the story back to that planet and Daniel return
Happy Birthday Stargate. Turns 30 this year. This movie was meant to part 1 of a trilogy but the sequels were unfortunately canned due to studio politics. The TV show got made instead and Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich got shafted during it's creation. Devlin in particular has been pretty bitter about it for a long time, and I can't say I blame him. I wouldn't like to have my creation ripped away from me and watch it being handed to others either. The music by David Arnold is BEAUTIFUL! David Arnold's best work is literally everything he did with Roland Emmerich. Stargate, Independence Day and Godzilla. Chef's kiss.
Stargate SG-1 and especially Atlantis are great. Universe and Origins not so much. If you enjoy Star Trek, you'll like the first two Stargate TV series.
They only had to make a couple of tiny retcons to transition this setting from movie to tv series (mostly the nature of the "evil" aliens), but it was very much a launching point for the "modern tech society suddenly thrust into sci-fi surroundings" trope - you could always keep the truly game-changing technology hard to re-engineer or fabricate while allowing your protagonists to still get around and explore alien worlds - and as long as whatever was discovered happened away from Earth or was classified by Earth governments, it could all be happening present day within reason. And they definitely ran with the "ancient humans venerated aliens as gods" idea.
I would say the biggest retcon is that the movie seems to imply that Ra is like an energy or incorporeal lifeform, whereas the Go'aud are physical parasites.
You guys!! So thrilled you watched this, and really encouraging you to dive into the series (the main series). Its fantastic. This movie gave birth the the series (10 seasons) and the series then birth several other series/spin offs and a few more movies.

Just the idea of the Stargate network allowed for dozens of possible stories as you could just make up a new planet and plant a Stargate there.
And every person on every planet they visit speaks perfect English. And the show doesn't even give two shits to try and explain it. Which is awesome.
@@RonJomero I always assumed that was because the stargate has like an auto translator built in every time you step through the gate.
And most planets they visit looks like somewhere in British Columbia. :P
@@Rincenso that would make sense if the ancient aliens teraformed the various planets using the same matrix. Then populated them with various ancient civilizations.
@@RonJomero well, they started not understanding each other, but that was too clunky to really do every episode, so ditched it, which was the best thing they could do really.
The show did a great job picking up from the movie too
Stargate !!Lets Gooooo!!!
Man I’d love to see you react to the TV Show xD
Indeed!
@@_Curanes_Rex kree!
SG-1 is must watch!!! George would definitely love it.
"He's from this really old sitcom, 3rd Rock ..." ... boy oh boy, for me it´s a relatively young show.
I'm surprised she recognized him so quickly. I think it took me 2-3 watches before I realized that was French Stewart (the voice gave it away before I recognized his face, lol).
Taken together, this is the weirdest timeline of 90s sci-fi revisit. I don't think I could handle the nostalgia
Joseph Gordan-Levitt. I absolutely Hated him on the attempted reboot of Dark Shadows, but he's pretty good in almost anything else! lol
@@gearoidosullivan356 start with stargate atlantis s1 and then go back to sg1 s1
I remember the pilot having some full frontal nudity (almost dropped my chewing gum as a kid watching the series after the movie), but that stopped right after that.😅
Watch the updated one.
@@Vohaul86 It seems weird now that it was originally aired on Showtime (which explains them allowing the nudity in the pilot) before moving to the Sci-Fi channel. I don't associate Stargate with showtime at all even though they each broadcast 5 seasons of it.
The biggest problem I found with the series for awhile was the music soundtrack being overly loud.
The audience has spoken. The first season of Stargate: SG1 awaits.
As soon as I heard them say that, all I thought was, "Ooh, this is gonna be fun to watch."
"Maybe they lifted us up" - The opposite, and that's why the earth gate was buried.
@@ThePixel1983 they lifted us up up and away! Lol
Stargate SG-1 is one of the best science fiction shows ever. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
Stargate SG1 is one of my all time favourite shows!
Okay, these guys need to watch the TV show. They're guaranteed to love it.
The Stargate series are my guilty pleasure. Anytime I need something for background noise, I put on SG-1 or Atlantic. Grew up on them airing on Sci-Fi before it was Syfy. Absolute classics.
Yes the show came after, however a couple of movies came from the show as well.
SG-1! SG-1! SG-1!
There has been a lot of talk about a new series lately.
Farscape (1999 - 2003) ❤❤❤
Lexx (1997 - 2002) ❤❤❤
Oh, man. I'd kill to watch them react to Farscape & Lexx.
Lexx had a ship shaped like a &&&&& didn't they ???
@@kerry-j4m Yes )
@@КиануДепп I remember that about this series, watched a few episodes too.
one of my absolute favourites. it really doesn't get the love it deserves
Not just a show spawned from it, a 10 season show, with a 5 season spinoff show, and a lesser watched 2nd spinoff with 1-2 seasons as well. Its the lesser known science fiction Star franchise after Wars and Trek. I was a massive fan of the show, I have all of SG-1 and Atlantis on dvd and dust em off every couple years
The comments are all on point, a reaction to at least a season of SG1 would be amazing
"He's gonna be fine, look at her!" George, George, you sneaky little.... :D :D
You two should totally work your way through SG-1. I’ll be here for every episode!
"Its like a really old sitcom..." I'll just go rot of old age now. 🤣
Stargate series is awesome, loved SG1 and Atlantis~!
There are serveral tv shows of Stargate. The ones I've watched, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis are pretty good
You mentioned the Ancient Aliens theory stuff.
Singing the DUNE song got me pretty good. It was kinda accurate.
And a pretty singing voice as well. Someone had a lot of good fairies around their crib when they were born. Oh yes...
Hang on, does crib still mean the same thing? Perhaps that devastating shot about 3rd Rock being a really old comedy thing was well-deserved. Gloom.
"It's from a really old sitcom, called Third Rock from the Sun…" ouch Simone, way to make us early millennials feel ancient 😂 Really channeled Peter Parker "really old movie called Alien" there
I turned to dust when I heard that line.
Gif of Matt Damon in Saving Private Ryan as an old man visiting the graveyard, but in reverse.
Yeah, that cut was deep.
Late Gen Xer here that was equally offended by her comment. 🤣
The last Roland Emmerich film I found to be enjoyable was The Patriot (2000) starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger.
Only thing that could make this film better would be Bill Paxton.
Game over man,game over !!!
@@kerry-j4m 30 seconds into the mission: "Yeah I don't see the hieroglyph we need to get back actually."
Did you notice ? Daniel is called "Jackson" by O'Neil the entire movie, but at the very last second, right before stepping back into the Stargate, O'Neil calls him "Doctor Jackson", showing how Daniel earned the man's respect through the adventure.
The Stargate shows were some great sci Fi TV
"A really old sitcom called Third Rock from the Sun" - Continuing to make me feel old LOL
The music really was a treat. 🎵🎻🎶
I would enjoy watching you two reacting to Stargate: SG1, and Stargate: Atlantis. Stargate: SG1 is 10 seasons, and is worth watching.
Stargate and Doctor Who, the only Shows i would definitely consider watching on Patreon 😆
You must now react to all of Stargate... It's a requirement. SG-1 here we come!
I dropped what I was doing to watch this to boost the algo. Please do the tv show.
I love watching people discover this movie so far after its release and love it. It’s a true classic.
There is so much more to the "stargate universe" lore that this movie doesnt even begin to dive into . You two should really watch SG1 and Atlantis ..... its alot but im here for it
3rd Rock From the Sun is a really old sitcom. I watched it in college. 😭
Must stink seeing someone else take your thing and make their own thing out of it, huh, Dean?
-Signed, a bitter Godzilla fan
Just after 12:00 - Simone, you were correct. Those were horses in costumes.
If yall enjoy Star Trek, and this film, I really think you're the right audience for the Stargate TV show(s).
Yeah, the tv show really feels like Star Trek. Especially TOS and TNG.
Indeed.
Plus, The TV show is half Canadian
Amanda Tapping! 🤤
@@neptunusrex5195 Not surprised some dude fell in love with her every season.
You guys would would love Stargate Universe.
I have to agree! The TV series is FANTASTIC! SG-1 and Atlantis! SG-1 vs System Lords and more! Odin!
Please start SG-1. It's my favorite show ever.
The Stargate SG-1 TV series & the spin off shows are really great. Well worth exploring, even if you don't have time to edit reactions to them.
