It's DEFINITELY a nineties era series, but a good 'un. It manages to pace itself in a way that holds up as a series while building on the mythos of the movie story quite well, but for .... hm. Don't know how to say it. For *ME* it's absurdly wonderful, and anyone who is remotely a fan of the movie will likely enjoy the show, but the pacing might be the biggest issue for them. I'd like him to dive in with like, four or so episodes and if he still enjoys it then he'll be hooked.
Otherwise, it's perhaps the brevity of the movie, and how quickly it delves into the narrative alongside the characters. Am I babbling? I think I'm babbling. I'm sorry. *puts down her whiskey and goes to bed*

The original show is based on and comes after the movie with some minor changes to the aliens. It does have an ‘adventure of the week’ style but with major arcs that progress over the course of each season and build on each other, where everything the characters learn and developments that happen carry over to later episodes more so than other shows of it’s time.

It saddens me that older style of tv story-telling doesn't work well for today's audience. When even 6 to 10 episodes on streaming services they often find slow.

The series begins a year after the events of the movie and you see some of the characters from the movie, with different actors playing them. The alien lore changes a bit, but you do learn more about the aliens, the tech, and the series definitely expands the universe. The first season is pretty planet-of-the-week, and there are a couple of wobbly episodes,, but like most long running series, it does find it's feet

Looking forward to this, one of my favourite movies. As well as it’s tv series spin off… This is an example of a great idea that was made even better by expanding it through a TV series… for the most part. It has some ups and downs throughout the various seasons, and it’s spin offs, but they’re generally good. Mostly the one based off the movie SG1 and the first spin off Atlantis; all that to say I’m also putting forward with some others that you should also check out the series! It’s quite an under taking though, SG1 is ten seasons long and has its own movies!

SG1 is still one of my favorite all time shows. I binge watched most of the seasons at the time to catch up with what was airing on TV. All the questions you are asking can be answered by the show. The cast was great and you were right that the first season was mostly new planet adventures every week. But eventually it all connected into a big story with explanations about who made the first stargates etc. I would love to see you react to the show even if it is just a couple of seasons.

Awesome reaction as always. Probably the hardest to watch though cause all your questions are answered in the shows and my god is it hard not to talk about it lol Although, I'll say this : The shows has, imo, one of the best continuity on tv. They introduce seemingly unimportant pieces of lore, places and people and then expand on them seasons later. Just genuinely great stuff. Also to the questions in your review, yes, the show expand on Ra and his race.
Yes, Jack was contemplating and accepted the mission in hope that he wouldn't come back.
You know, it's funny to me that an entire team of scientist couldn't recognize the point of origin without the 2 little dudes. Even so, they had 6 symbols, the gate has 39 glyphs, they could've just tried until they hit the one lmao
To be fair to Daniel, he didn't say aliens build the pyramids, he just said it wasn't the Egyptians. (There has been theories of older civilizations completely wiped out during the Younger Dryas.
Ra's guards are actually supposed to be the other gods of the Egyptian pantheon, like Anubis. And I think the most common theory on how they can see is a HUD.

The show SG-1 is fantastic. When it was first made it was on Showtime, so they could get away with a little more adult language. But later it was moved to cable so it became more tame in a sense but got even better I think. A lot of Trekkies and sci-fi fans hold SG-1 in high regard. something like that is also a major plot point in Battlestar Galactica: _"the destination, Earth,"_ is "the place from where one can see the 12 colonies" as per the prophecy.
with all of that ending up meaning "the 12 colonies" as in "the constellations" and wherever you can see all of them, is Earth.

I watched all the series and straight to video movies. I'm not a big military guy, but this was good writing and my wife and I were fans. Seeing Kurt Russel and James Spader is always a trip down memory lane, because the shows came later. The series reconned a few things that improved the premise, chiefly that the master alien species is a race of sentient neural parasites, who see their natural place as feeding upon and taking over a host body. They even farm a race of willing and devoted warrior slaves. And they flush out the tech more, though it uses an entirely different basis than ours, so they stay light on that except as a plot device. The SG-1 Team even has a line of books, like Star Trek does. The last show, *Stargate: Universe* had a ton of potential, but the whole franchise lost direction and popularity, and that pulled down what might have been the best show on TV then.

First of all I apologize if this gets too rambley or long winded, so I'll try to stick to the main points.
Being a child of the 70's, I grew up on the wave of the King Tut tour in pop culture. I loved Egyptology from there. And when this movie came out when I was like 23 it influenced my first tattoo, (my name in a cartouche). And the writings on the wall were actual hieroglyphs. So the production team did their research for sure. The two masks of the guards represented Anubis (the jackal god) and Horus (the bird god). In Egyptian mythology Horus plucked out the eye of his brother Ra. Which is where the eye symbol on the pendant and the stone slap sign in the village came from.
At a convention here in WA state they had on display the Horus mask and armor. It was so well designed and detailed up close. And I later got to talk to famed Egyptologist/Archeologist Kara Cooney about her opinions on the film. She said she thought it was a fun popcorn movie. And was glad that it got lots folks interested in Egyptian history.
The film ended up making more money than expected, and got enough backing to do the mammoth beast "Independence Day". Which sadly Emmerich followed with "Godzilla". Unfortunately, Roland Emmerich personal life has marred his work. Author Brent Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero & American Psycho) said associates of his had been invited to a party cohosted with Bryan Singer that included underage folks at Emmerich's home. And even though he is an out Gay man, Emmerich admits to owning Hitler memorabilia.
But thank you for all your hard work on your channel. And as a new viewer, I'll be following the rest of video's.

The show answers all your questions. I'm a big Star Trek fan, but I found Stargate SG-1 (the direct successor to this movie) to be the most entertaining TV sci-fi series I've ever seen. A lot of that had to do with judicious recasting. In the movie, Colonel O'Neil was a somber self-absorbed character. The TV series brought in Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver), who did the series with the proviso that he could make O'Neill more relatable and funny. (Dean Anderson wasn't blossoming in MacGyver...he did in this series.) The recasting of Daniel was a good choice too. One big improvement was changing out the flat General West with another general, who had an authoritative but close and caring relationship with the team. (The SG-1 stands for team one.) Extremely entertaining. A couple members not in the movie were added, which made the series quite enjoyable to watch. Highly recommended.

I can never get over how Disney pretty much - intentionally or not - took Stargate's plot and turned it into Atlantis: The Lost Empire years later. I like that movie too, but the similarities are way too much to ignore. Nerdy scientist guy starts out giving a lecture about an ancient civilization but everyone thinks he's a crackpot. Then a wealthy benefactor shows up and offers him a spot on a dangerous expedition that can prove his theories true. The specifics of the adventure do differ, but there are a lot of shared elements, and the two leads even wind up making the same choice at the end.

    Anyway, 13:23.
I imagine the gate opens a unidirectional wormhole from the origin gate to the destination gate. So the current, if you will, flows only one way. The traveler (or anything) that enters the gate will ride that current and be ejected through the destination gate.
Anyone who tries to enter through the destination gate will also be ejected back out of it, so trying to go through the opposite direction will be futile.
No one can run fast enough to climb up this down escalator. 😉

So, yeah, watch the show! It’s got brilliant 90s Vancouver studio tv show vibes, story threads to follow, but usually POTW Planet of the week episodes but great character development, expansion on every question you’ve asked. RDA is a treasure as Jack O‘Neill (two Ls iykyk) but when is he not? The Daniel Jackson actor has been somehow genetically engineered to look like James Spader in the first season and sometimes it’s eerie…new characters you’ll enjoy…just…check out the first few episodes…it’s a commitment with 10 seasons but just start slow. It still holds up when it comes to modern PC sensibilities. So, not too much to be worried about there… the lore expands and expands…so judging from your final thoughts I think you might enjoy it.

In the TV show, the gate is one-way. In an early draft script for this movie, they can't turn the gate on from Earth because after the team leaves, they evacuate the underground facility for unclear but planned reasons, so there's simply no one left to turn it on.

That incredibly famous tunnel is the entrance to NORAD, just a few miles southwest of Colorado Springs, and due west (walking distance) of the Army base of Fort Carson.
And by 'walking distance' I mean under an hour after obtaining your equipment.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so I'll throw in a fun fact: there was a sequel planned for this movie, and it was going to involve aliens traveling to Earth in large ships to get revenge for the death of Ra. When it was cancelled, the idea was used as a separate movie..
Also, another vote for SG1 and Atlantis. They do retcon a few things to allow for more stories (Ra wasn't the last of his kind, he was a parasitic alien rather than a Grey, O'Neil's name becomes O'Neill due to there being a real Colonel O'Neil in the Air Force, the planet they went to was actually relatively close to Earth and not at the far end of the universe), but the majority of changes are improvements.

Great analysis. 👍 thank you. Such a unique sci fi film. The way it mixes history with sci fi is pretty original.

Richard Dean Anderson (coming off his strength as the star of "MacGyver" 5 years previously) was asked to play the Kurt Russel character while the TV series was still in development. Originally it was meant to be a 2-year contract, with 44 episodes ordered for that first year, but then they ordered another 44 episodes. Eventually, Anderson became the show's executive producer. After 10 years in the role, Anderson left to spend more time with his daughter, who was growing up fast.
The intent was to hold to the original movie as much as possible. Even Anderson wanted that.
As far as the aliens' attitude to humans, I think it was more along the lines of our own attitude to animals, in that we butcher animals to use them medically to preserve human life. For example, heart valves and skin used for burn victims' skin grafts are harvested from pigs. So long as humans remain 'domesticated' for alien use, all is well; it's the feral ones that become a problem.
Consider, too, the vast gulf between current human technology and the ancient alien race. It's on a level with humans and apes. If brown-/black-skinned human beings can be considered 'livestock' in the 18th and 19th centuries, the aliens can easily see humans as a useful resource. It's not lording it over humans that appeals to Ra, it's the need to maintain dominance and appear god-like. In the TV series, even the alien soldiers' loyalty is based on believing Ra and his race are actual gods. The TV series has numerous storylines of soldiers who have quit believing trying to convince faithful soldiers to see the aliens are NOT gods.

I know it's probably been said a billion times, but as interested in knowing more, I would wholeheartedly recommend the series. It's REALLY amazing. You absolutely learn more about the race that created all this technology while also doing a lot of 'planet o the week' world hopping. It's a freaking fantastic show.

I love the tv show. It actually moves forward from the movie rather than ignoring the movie wver existed. I alsways thought that was cool. Judging from what you have expressed interest in knowing more about, you would probably get a lot out of the show. Highly recommend it. Love this movie.... but to me the show is way better.

The series "Stargate SG:1" is amazing. It is like a beautiful combination of the original movie, some star trek, some star wars, even some really cool weird stuff that feels similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, while still bringing it's own unique spin on everything. There's a little Galaxy Quest influence later on too. It's brilliant. You'll love it. It took the movie, which was pretty good, and improved on it with deep lore and sci-fi mixed with action and humor. I wish more nerds watched it because it really is incredible. The first season is the worst, but it's still got a lot of really incredible episodes.

This movie supplanted Jurassic Park as the best movie ever made in my middle school mind. I love the movie, and loved the TV series. I think you’d like it, and I’m definitely in for the ride if you start watching it on the channel!
As others said, SG-1 answers all the questions you had at the end of the film. The show earned several awards throughout its run, including awards for special effects in a television show.
Just thinking back on the series… dang, it would be fun to watch anew through your eyes!

The TV Series Stargate Sg-1 is a direct sequel to this movie starring original characters Jack and Daniel. The show is a masterclass of world building and every question that you mentioned in this video is talked about and answered in the series. The show is great and had a few TV movies to make sure the series ended and finished all its storylines. It even spun off two other series Stargate Atlantis (starring Jason Momoa) and Stargate Universe which are also high quality and worth watching.

To answer your question the ancient alien trope really first gains widespread popularity with the 1968 book "Chariots of the Gods" by Erich Von Daniken. Certainly it predated that book, but that book decidedly popularized it to the point that it could expand iinto the public consciousness more.

Seriously, everyone else has already said it but please at least give SG-1 a shot. It's got Christopher Judge (the voice of Kratos) as Teal'c and he's a library of one-liners. You might have to get a few episodes in to it to really like it but it's so good once it gets going. All of your questions will be answered and more. It's just pure fun.

Stargate is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi show. It ended in 2007 and I've been watching the reruns since then. The show is a bit different from the movies, but it does answer many of your questions especially about Ra's people, who built the Stargate and more. You liked this movie you'll love the series. It had 3 spinoffs and 2 movies (I think). Atlantis is also my fave.

This is one of the best Sci-Fi franchises in existence. You abso-freakin-lutely need to check out the pilot of the show, and check out the series. Its an undertaking for sure, but you will be so very happy you did.
One of the major retconned bits of information is that, the gates aren't taking you to the other side of the universe, but rather the other side of the galaxy.
lastly, without giving any spoilers, the lore expands so much more than you can imagine, in so many amazing ways. Its such a well thought out, well put together show.
