I'm a Navy vet who was in the fleet when the news of all this broke. As a Gunner's Mate 3'rd class, I had mixed emotions. On one hand I was thinking that all the training and practice I'd like to know how well I'd be: on the other hand, I didn't want to be in a situation where I had to kill.
I do appreciate the historic bits you were adding. I especially liked the comment suggesting they ask the Japanese about our naval capabilities.

Im a retired NAVY guy, my first ever cruise was aboard the carrier U.S.S. YORKTOWN. On our NATO cruise a helo of HS3 a(helicopter squadron)3,at night . The pilots developed vertigo and crashed in the stormy north sea. All 3 died. Even at peace-time, our carrier squadrons average a death of at least 1 person per month. I was with an aviation group (anti-submarine trackers), I still think about these poor guys.........carrier-ops are truly dangerous!

My uncle was an aviation mechanic in the USN. He served 76-79 (ranking up to P02, if I remember correctly) maintaining/repairing sub hunters aboard the USS John F Kennedy. We are historically a US Army family, so he’s a bit of an outlier, getting the occasional ribbing from us, but he’s loved & respected for his service just the same as anyone else. He had some of the best stories he would tell us growing up, too. Some fun & light hearted, others not so much. Anyway, one service member to another, thank you for everything. The Iranian captains did their duty, no matter how suicidal that was.
The Iranian Frigates were built in the United Kingdom by Vosper Ltd and based on their Mark 5 design, at a time when British designed ships lacked CIWS systems and relied only on counter measures to defend against missiles.
This design philosophy changed after the hard learned lessons of the Falkland's war.
These ship displaced 1100 to 1530 tons (much less than half the size of the US Perry class frigates) and had the following arms & equipment:
    ASuW - 1 × quintuple Sea Killer Mk2 surface-to-surface missile
AAW - 1 × triple Sea Cat surface-to-air missile launcher
ASW - 1 × 3 barrelled Anti Submarine Mortar Mark 10 Limbo launcher
    Guns - 1 × Mark 8 Mod 0 4.5 inch general purpose & 1 × twin 35mm Oerlikon AA
Electronics - Plessey AWS 1 air surveillance radar with on-mounted IFF; 2 × Contraves Sea hunter systems (For use with Sea cat, Sea Killer & the 35mm mount); Decca RDL 1 passive direction finding equipment
They were refitted in the UK shortly before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, so this equipment was totally inadequate for the threats of 1988, when this ship was sunk.
Today the situation is much different, because of land based hypersonic missiles that make Carrier task groups vulnerable.
The Swedish Gotland-class submarine, using its advanced Stirling engine air-independent propulsion system, successfully "sank" the USS Ronald Reagan in a wargame exercise, but However, it was not the only case a US carrier was "sunk".
The Australians tricked a US carrier task force making them think that an Australian P-3C was a civilian aircraft and they got a simulated strike by 2 Harpoon missiles on the Carrier.
The US responded in vengeance for the fiasco by adding 200 miles on the GPS, making the Australians get lost in their own sea, while the US ships new about it and corrected the GPS signal.
Also a Greek Type 214 conventional submarine "sunk" twice a brand new British nuclear submarine during wargames in the Mediterranean sea, even surprising the Greek crew that commented: "OK the first time we caught them by surprise, but the second time they new we were there".

When he was talking about hitting the magazine on the Iranian ship and it exploding, the magazine is where the ship stores the ammuntion, so hitting that equals big boom. Like what happened to the Arizona at Pearl Harbor.

ON a warship the Magazine is where explosive contents are stored, such as powder charges. shells, or complete rounds of ammunition, missiles, etc. You might blow a hole in a ship with a torpedo or mine or bomb and it'll probably sink with enough hits. Hit a magazine and unless it is very well designed or the type of hit allows enough water in instantly to quench any fire or explosion in the initial stages, it will explode, likely destroying the ship, depending on the size.
As a comparison, the USS Arizona took numerous bomb hits and could have been salvaged like the other battleships at Pearl Harbor, but one bomb detonated in the black powder magazine, instantly exploding with enough energy to set off most of the smokeless powder magazine adjacent to it (smokeless powder is less volatile than black powder), and blowing the forward part of the ship apart with enough force that witnesses stated they saw the bow leap out of the water tens of feet before it crashed back down and the forward superstructure collapsed down onto it. This explosion broke the keel at that location, annihilated all the sections in that area, and caused massive fires elsewhere in the ship.
Magazine explosions are almost always 100% the near-instant death of a warship. There are a couple of exceptions, but those are extremely lucky and rare.

Magazine? Just like in a firearm, a ship's magazine is where the ammunition is stored prior to it going up the spout. Hitting a ship's magazine is an almost guaranteed ship kill, as the contents are usually measured in Tons, and they react poorly to being poked with explosive shells...
Interestingly, the common box magazine used in most military firearms derive their name from the naval magazine...

The Battle off Samar, mentioned in this video because of the Samuel B. Roberts, as part of the much larger Battle for Leyte Gulf, was one of the most stunning victories in naval warfare history (or maybe any warfare history).
It is like the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae, the Marines on Wake Island or the defenders at the Alamo….. except the horribly outnumbered defenders won the day.
Tiny destroyers and destroyer escorts charged into battleships (including the largest battleship ever built-Yamato) and cruisers.
Toss in small escort carriers who launched all of their small contingent of planes who were not equipped for anti-ship warfare.
The ferocity with which the small American ships attacked, turned a Japanese force where the battleship Yamato by itself outweighed the entire American task force.
For the surface battle, the Americans had 3 destroyers and 4 destroyer escorts which took on the Japanese fleet of 4 battleships, 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers and 11 destroyers.
Also were 6 escort carriers who were trying desperately to beyond range of the battleships and cruisers. Two of the carriers were sunk along with two destroyers and a destroyer escort (Samuel B. Roberts).
Salute to the sailors of the escort carriers:
    Fanshaw Bay
    St Lo (sunk)
    White Plains
    Kalinin Bay
    Kitkun Bay
    Gambier Bay (sunk)
    Destroyers:
    Hoel (sunk)
    Heermann
    Johnston (sunk)
    Destroyer escorts:
    Dennis
    John C. Butler
    Raymond
    Samuel B. Roberts (sunk)

      Battle off Samar Drachinifel
Drachinifel has some great naval history and does a great one on this battle.
I believe near the end, he said something like, almost certainly they all realized that they were about to die and were determined to inflict as much damage to the enemy as possible.
Captain Ernest Evans of the Johnston was last seen near the stern of the ship as it was sinking, still giving orders. He was never seen again. Evans was awarded the Medal of Honor.

And the reason gas prices are the way they are. Every time someone wants to blame an American politician for gas prices.
