    In 1999 I bought a used first-generation Elantra, stick shift, when stationed in South Korea. I drove that car to all four corners of the country. It was comfortable and completely reliable. Made some great memories behind the wheel of that car.

    Loved this video. Have followed Hyundai all the way through from the mid 90's when my parents bought a 95 Hyundai Scoupe with the 1.5 Alpha. Thought it was such a great car as a kid and wanted nothing but a Hyundai for my first car.
    In 2005 I bought a brand new Elantra XD 2.0 Beta CVVT manual in the top Elite trim in Australia. Absolutely loved that car. I loved the styling and kept it for 10 years, I still think Hyundai's best engines were the Alpha and Beta motors. I remember changing the oil and it was always still golden and clean. Sold it to a lovely person who is still driving it to this day.
    Have to agree the HD was a real disappointing model. Watching the reveal of the HD I knew that the XD was staying around for a while.
    The MD was a massive step in the right direction, the new engine wasnt really a big step forward, but did the job.
    The AD Elantra series 1 would have to be the nicest looking model and reminded me of my XD Elantra. The 1.6 turbo is a fantastic engine. Noteworthy of being up there with Hyundai's Alpha and Beta.
    AD series 2... Oh my gosh. No words. Another disappointment like the HD.
    The CN7 Elantra is edgy and has really turned the sedan body into a desirable model. Love the CN7.
    I'm on to my 8th Hyundai. Really enjoying Palisade Diesel.

    The 6th gen was a great looking car and when the Sport version was introduced, I wanted it to have more power. It was larger inside than a 3 series and I felt it looked a bit sporty, so the sport version should have been better than it was. I was hoping when the G70 was coming out, it would be that size since BMW and Audi was making their 3 Series and A4 a bit larger, the G70 should compete in a way the Koreans did, by giving their car a larger interior, now that they launched their luxury line. The lack of interior space is one of the reasons I went with the Stinger GT2 instead of the G70.
    I had a chance to check out the 7th gen but didn’t care for it, the N Line seems like it was a great upgrade in the performance space but the normal car just felt cheap and tinny, unlike the Forte. The Forte has more presence than the new Elantra to me, I would go with the Forte over the Elantra. It nice that they have improved it over the years but there was a time when it seemed like every year they were giving it a new look to keep relevant. Liked the video, you should also do similar ones about the Forte and other Korean cars from both Hyundai and KIA. Thanks as always Charlie!

    FYI: The Elantra in its first two generations were named as "Lantra" for the European/British and Australian/New Zealand markets, whilst the only time the Elantra name appeared in those aforementioned markets was with the third-generation - before it was replaced by the i30 in 2007.
    On the other hand, I would deeply love to wish Hyundai Motor Group to acquire and thus gain from the Ford Motor Company, especially with the latter having a limited presence in South Korea then Ford would gain from Hyundai (since SK is its home market) and in turn a Hyundai takeover of Ford (aka Blue Oval) would affect everything but the Elantra.
    Interestingly, both Hyundai and Kia had links with Ford in the past, with the first one (Hyundai) licencing Euro/Brit Ford cars until the early 1980s while the second one (Kia) merged with Ford between 1986 until 1998 - the latter was the year Hyundai bought Kia from Ford (to which the Mustang and Ranger manufacturer has a profoundly strong auto racing heritage that has been for years long even before and after World War II and the Korean War).

      @@AsianPetrolhead Yes, mate. That is what I wonder if Hyundai (Motor Group) would buy Ford, to which it not only have both strong heritages in motorsport and as well agriculture, but also what I believe is the Elantra/i30 would be a spiritual yet distant relative to the Cortina/Taunus and Sierra that were successes for the Blue Oval in Europe/Britain and elsewhere abroad, e.g. Argentina, Chile, since these two were front-engined, rear-wheel driven (Ford in fact still makes the Mustang while the Mach E is based on a modified FWD Focus platform).
      Also, in Mexico, Hyundai/Kia is honestly a new brand as Toyota whilst the former (plus the latter) lags behind Ford in that market - as Ford deeply maintains a strong presence in the Mexican market just as they do in Argentine territory. Ford has factories in both countries with the Mexican one located in Hermosillo and Cuautitlan whereas the one in Argentina is situated in General Pacheco, in which the latter only assembles the Ranger pickup/ute/bakkie as of today.
      And moreover, what drives an idea of Hyundai buying Ford is that the first one is South Korean and the second one is a multinational American carmaker that will celebrate its 120th anniversary next year, especially with Ford already gone in Japan, Indonesia and India means for HMG taking over the legendary Blue Oval label would be considered safe and beneficial since the latter (Ford) isn't Japanese either - as far as I know before that a myriad SK companies, e.g. Samsung, would refuse to work or buy Japanese corporations since South Korea still have such ice with Japan... :)

    I have owned quite a few vehicles as for Elantra's. my 1st was a stick 1997 GLS Red with the factory trunk spoil.. i pushed it hard with over 154,000 miles my 1.8L was still making 125hp to the wheels good power for back then considering a 7A 1.8 Corolla was under a 100whp.. my 2nd was a 2011 just loved it but traded it for a 2015 Red with the 2.0 GDi more powerful and more refined.. 3rd i have now is a 2018 Elantra Sport Turbo which i think is the best looking out of these modern versions.. Hyundai still have kept the shape around for 2 more years and just refined it or added more features.. some countries got that sweet fastback elantra (i30) I'm so jealous.. the rest got that ugly 2019 update 🙄😑 Hyundai never Surrey's their loyal customers what we truly want..

CN7 looks great too but quite a shame it is behind the Japanese now with most of them having multilink rear suspension while Elantra is stucked with torsion beam, also too many hard plastic panels around the dashboard compared to Civic and Mazda3.

  • @OlJackBurton
    @OlJackBurton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No mention of the Elantra GT that was sold briefly in the US? I don't know if South Korea ever had that model. It's the closest thing to the i30 that the US has had. Also, Hyundai really needs to learn a thing or two about facelifts/refreshes. Sure, they add a lot more new features and improvements in their refreshes than most other manufacturers do, but how do you go from the most "handsome" Elantra to "Venom" in the same generation? They also did a similar thing with the previous generation Sonata. It went from nice looking but a bit boring, to "Predator" in the same generation. Worse than the current catfish. Even the current refreshed Santa Fe looks strange in the front and i don't consider it a visual improvement. Hyundai just gives answers to questions nobody ever asked. Kia doesn't do this even when they need to fix the face (last generation Sportage)...

    • @AsianPetrolhead
      @AsianPetrolhead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh forgot to mention that one. We didn't get the Elantra GT and we don't have i30N here in Korea, it's not so fair!... Thank you Jack for enjoying our everything about Hyundai Elantra.
