We had an old Farmall M with the mounted picker. Spent many hours upon that tractor picking corn. Always had to watch corn chaff did not build up down near manifold - would catch fire very easily! Thanks for the video - some great memories!

A farmer from central Minnesota did a lot of custom picking in the 1960's and 1970's.He had (3) mounted John Deere pickers on (3) 2cyl John Deere tractors. He operated one unit, his wife operated one, and his brother one.He had a lot of customers in a 20 mile radius.

My uncle had an early 770 oliver narrow front with a 2 row mounted picker. I remember riding on it with my dad when i was little. (1989-1990) He then "upgraded" to a 701 new idea 3 row picker that he used up until he died in 2004.

My uncle still uses his International Harvester two row front mount corn picker on his M Farmall its a good setup he finds decent one's people think are old junk and makes use out of them. On another note I have never seen one that separated the grain from the cobs thats pretty neat obviously a step in the right direction.

One question: has the field of corn they're picking been standing for a year? Seems like an awfully thin yield if not.

How were those ears stored? And did they get the grain out of the ears ? Never seen something like that in Belgium , maybe not old enough ?
What was the last year your grandfather used such a machine ?

Here in Canada...the ears were stored mostly in corn cribs...they were large outdoors holding bins usually made of lumber and wire...it allowed the corn to dry naturally and the cob corn was either fed in full cobs to the livestock or processed through a grinder mill to make corn chop,...kind of like a flour to also feed to livestock...Google search Corn Cribs to see different varieties...hope this helps

Here in central Michigan, by the 1980's so many farmers had gone to field shelling corn that the Andersons in Maumee, Ohio would pay a premium for cob corn. Andersons had a market for the cob. The price for the cob was enough to pay for the 100 miles of trucking, and then some.

Must have cost a bunch back in the day to have all those guys standing buy to throw the corn into the cart as it went past.
