Hi-Lo gearboxes are pretty common in the 4x4 world, but they never really took off in the motorcycle world. We split open a vintage Suzuki with a dual ratio gearbox to understand why.

nobody will ever find this comment buried 7 pages down the list but maybe someone at FortNine reads all these things and will find this little tidbit interesting: that spider encrusted in dirt ... well that is exactly what it is. There is a family (genus?) of wasps out there that hunt and paralyze spiders which they then encase in little crypts made of mud and lay their eggs inside of them. The spiders stay fresh so that when the eggs finally hatch the young wasps have something to feed upon.

Don't forget that the original Honda CT series, starting in 67, all had two range gearboxes. When they brought out the new 125 recently, us traditionalists were giving Big H raspberries because the new bike didn't have it (and needed it).

Also need to point out that all these Honda bikes were four stroke. The hi lo gear box was by no means a product of two cycle technology. It was due to underpowered small bore sales making Japanese so much money. They were the only one in the game. I mean Harley small bore stuff was a joke.

I had a Suzuki TS250 in 1975. It was a 2 stroke but apparently had enough torque that it didn't need the HI/LO gear selector. The TS250 was a dual sport that was trying to be a 4 stroke. It had separate tanks for the gas and oil and it mixed them automatically. If you want the experience of the RV125 or TS90 in a 4 stroke, try the Honda CT90 or CT110. There are versions with the HI/LO gearbox. If you want to try slow back road and off road ultralight moto camping, many people use them for that, or the newer Trail125.

Was waiting for this comment. My one and only custom bike. ‘82 CB900C. Had it for nearly one season but it wasn’t for me. Thought I’d plate it as a collector bike (95$/year) to save some $ living in QC. But I found the hi-lo gears great. Sold it to a guy that used to have one so it went to a good home.

My first bike was a Suzuki 125 four stroke with this dual range tranny. The crawling feature was pretty cool back then, though I was jealous of the massive power of a friend’s 185cc Honda.
I’d love to have that bike again now 40-odd years later.

I'm sorry, but 46 is definitely off the FortNine basketball team. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn WITH the broad side of a barn!
I love the simplicity of the system. Sometimes creativity really kicks in when your options are limited. There's nothing inherently stupid about a high/low dual ratio gearbox. It was a practical solution to the limitations of the little Suzuki 2-cycle that just worked. That's not such a bad thing, especially in a world where "right to repair" is rapidly becoming as rare as a vintage British motorcycle that DOESN'T leak oil everywhere.

The biggest issue with these (or at least with the CT90s) is that you're running an air-cooled engine twice as hard but not going as fast, so you risk cooking the engine. Good for a short stint to get out of trouble, but not for extended trails where the terrain is tough.

My first "real" bike was a 1972 TC 125. Bought it from a friend of my dad for 400 bucks in 1978. Low was too slow and high was too weak. Upgraded to a 1979 PE250 in 1980 that I got from a dealer return. That was a hell of a bike for a kid.

Great video! Everybody was mad Honda didn't include a dual-range subtranny on the Trail 125 like they did on its predecessor, the Trail 90. I'm not sure it would have been worth the extra cost, but it would be an extremely cool feature.
I think I prefer Suzuki's shift-on-the-fly subtranny over Honda's, which worked quite differently, though no doubt Honda's was more durable. Thanks for showing the tear-down.

I know that the ATC125M cane with a reverse gear which occupies the same place as the range gears. I guess it was a toss up and reverse won, on the ATC's anyway.

The local moto-cafe uses the old Honda Trail with the low range gears to tow motorcycles that aren't running, they also used it to tow an air cooled VW Beetle back to their shop.

Only commented about this the other day on your short looking at the internal carb. Lovely to hear more about it as loved my 1971 TC90. They never made it to the UK as we only had the TS I believe, so when my dad imported it along with a load of Yam XS's it was an interesting rebuild for sure. So lots of people including myself found it fascinating and many accidently wheelies when I forgot it was left in Low lol.

Last November I purchased a Honda XRM 125 in the Philippines for $1,900 CDN new. Now over 6,000 KM. Amazing bike for here. Love it so much. 65 km/litre. 90 kph easy. Go anywhere. I owned bikes in Canada for years. The XRM is slower but just as much fun.

  • @fixedG

With electronics, riding modes and switchable rider assists being what they are now, it'd be neat if manufacturers offered something akin to an impossible-to-stall mechanical crawler gear below first gear, only somehow electronically restricted so you couldn't accidentally drop into it on the street. It'd be a solution to a niche problem, sure, but it wouldn't have the compromise of going down a tooth on your front sprocket. 4-strokes have gotten more powerful but bikes and riders have also gotten heavier.

You were right the first time. The orange bike was a TC90. It had the high/ Low transmission 4/4. The TS was a 5 speed without the high/ low. They both had the internal carburetors. I sure hope the TC90 had something wrong with it, that made it beyond economical repair. For a kid, they were great bikes.

Yamaha also sold the AG100 here in Australia with hi/lo, was a 2 stoke with a separate oil tank so you didn't have to premix. Marketed mainly for farm use. It has big metal bars around the handgrips, clutch and brake levers in case you dropped it
