    This is the clearest explanation of giving/receiving that I've heard so far ^^ Thanks! I had no idea "social distance" was so wrapped up into the grammar.

      How to say "Mr. Abe gave flowers to YOU" or "Did You give Mr. Abe flowers"? This Video didn't explain!

    • @nihongomainichi7010
      @nihongomainichi7010 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think japanese culture doesn't talk about speaking in 3rd person perspective that's why these rules are not given here

    • @Rhovanion85
      @Rhovanion85 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chouken84 When you say "Mr Abe gave flowers to you", you are feeling relative to that person so you'd say あべさんははなをくれました and from context they will know くれる does not mean you but them but in the same group (うち) If you talk to s stranger and want to say "mr abe gave flowers to you" You will always say "You received flowers from Mr Abe" because otherwise it would be too direct. You COULD theoretically say あなたにあべさんははなをあげました, but it is very very very rude and I strongly recommend avoiding it. That is perhaps why the video does not explain it.
      Maybe another way would be to use the passive form: あべさんにはなをあげられました but that kind of sounds as if you are annoyed by it because you "received" the action of him giving it "upon you".
      "Did you give Mr Abe flowers" -> あべさんにはなをあげましたか?

    Interesting. I haven't noticed such rule even exists in my mother tongue 😅.
    In my sense, あげる seems kind of neutral 'to give' and くれる is for whatever benefits the speaker directly or indirectly through speaker's social group acknowledging the contribution of the subject person.

    • @LL-bl8hd
      @LL-bl8hd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So interesting! I'm curious, do you ever use くれる when both the giver and receiver are outside your family/circle?

    • @ryotakus.1560
      @ryotakus.1560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LL-bl8hd I think no. Usage of くれる is really subjective. It shows the appreciation and credit on the giver not just the fact 'to give'. So that's weird, if both do not share any interest with you. But yes, if I'm telling someone's story and so absorbed in his/her feeling, I would confuse it.

    social distance doesnt sound like that foreign of a cultural concept, I find most cultural differences between countries tend to be seemingly negligible in practice. As human beings, we tend to get used to culture we emerse ourselves in without realizing it's any different from our own background.

      I can communicate with basic words on what I want to say, but oftentimes my speech still comes off as strange to Japanese people. They still get the idea of what I'm trying to say though. I'm able to communicate what I want, basically, but I still have a long way to go.

      Wow, you made so much progress in a few months! Just 2 things, with the verb NARU, you have to modify the ending of i-adjectives (嬉しくなって), and you need the casual form before TO OMOU, so with a NA-adjective, that would be 便利だと思います ;-)

    • @hadi2397
      @hadi2397 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, thank you! Hearing that makes me feel quite motivated. I didn't expect you to notice. Just one thing though, why do I have to say da to omoimasu instead of to omoimasu?

    • @KANJILink
      @KANJILink  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember that a few months ago you were still learning conjugations, and now you make long sentences, so yeah, obviously you made a lot of progress! As for your question, 便利 is a NA-adjective, so that means that it "needs" the verb "to be". It's actually the same as English, you cannot say "I think convenient", you have to say "I think IT IS convenient". But it is true that a lot of people tend to shorten it and take out the だ. Hope this helps :-)
