Great interview
I'm glad Sue did this interview, since a Rivian is her own daily driver. I can well imagine that the reservations are piling up for the R2, even though they have to wait two more years for deliveries to start.
RJ examples on the R2 rear glass re-architecting and the 4895 battery thermal gradient limitation illustrate a CEO who has a keen awareness of the details that matter which bodes well if they can navigate through the challenges of the next few years, and of course Sue is a gem, thoughful questions and a kean listener.
This is by far the best interview since R2 reveal I have seen. Great information in this video.

She acts like she is talking to her girlfriend and always giving her support by saying yea over and over. Does she say no if she disagrees or stays silent? Is she coaching the guy?
yes she is good but some healthy feedback is that you don't need to make 'yeah' and 'ahum sounds' whilst the interviewee is answering -- makes for a listener to the interview not great.

RJ is just a such easily likeable person, I love how he looks at things, his ambition and excitement. I really wish him and Rivian the best, especially as it really is a rough business and the current market doesn't make things easier.

Great interview! RJ and Rivian's R2/R3/X reveal was just spectacularly done. Props to everyone involved. All three vehicles look amazing, and I've never been so excited about a future vehicle as right now. I love everything about the designs -- inside and out. It's hard to wait, but I believe Rivian is doing everything they can to get to delivery.
RIVIAN has DEMAND problem, sells too FEW Vehicles, Current vehicles are TOO EXPENSIVE.
Modify your delivery van line and add an extended van body panels on it on the same chasis to make a diy cargo van.
Sell the edv chassis itself to rv upfitters to! 👍🏻😎
Sue is amazing! I do hope Rivian survive and can scale to mass production profitability.

This is why I was more than happy to pay a premium for my R1S. The CEO is an engineer that can communicate effectively at every level. Also pay attention what he says about diversity around 8:50. Very different messaging than that other CEO. Great interview Sue.
I've been thinking about this interview, and it was one of the few moments since the launch that I heard something new and compelling. RJ has a list of bullet points and in every interview up till now, he has fired off these bullets in a series of combative interviews.
But that moment when Sue put her pad down on the table the interview dynamic shifted down a gear and RJ seemed to be instantly disarmed and leaned back in his chair.
Masterfull interviewing technique. Sue should be interviewing leaders of countries and commerce. We might actually find out something new from them too :-)
Hope to see Rivians in Europe soon. R2 smaller size would be a great buy. Hope they can succeed. RJ is in production hell and seems drained but also excited he seems to be a great person.

What I really like is how genuine and open RJ is on his personal journey as a founder and CEO and the natural mistakes that happen on this learning path. I think we need to rally around and help shape and grow these American built companies. Made in the USA, designed in California and I’m a proud shareholder in this company and want to see them bring the challenge to Tesla and usher in the next generation of made in the USA.

Really think they need to move up the time line on R3 if at all possible, especially if they are thinking of selling it in other markets, I could see it having a large market share at the right price.

Great interview with Sue letting him answer. Many times Sandy tries to dominate the interview and impress the interviewee with is knowledge instead of letting the other person talk. Well done.

This is all fine, but WHEN it will be in hands of buyer is the most important element. If it doesn't get delivered until June 2026, as an example, that is a lot time from now.
I will check back late in 2025 to see if it is still coming out, and when the delivery date will be.

Nice job overall Sue and Munro team. A little bit of fan girling going on, but you really love your R1T, so I get it.
I do think the R2 will be successful, but it really needs to be coming out this year. I know that is impossible and I would not want them to rollout a half baked product, but the EV9 seems to be a home run, so the EV5 and probably the EV3 will be on the market by the time the R2 hits consumers hands. Then you have the Volvo offerings and other all coming to market as well. There is no doubt Rivian has carved out a certain feel that is attracting buyers. It will be interesting to see how the final production version of the R2 stacks up to what is on the market in 2026, which I am going to guess 2027 is more likely when it will come out. Nothing against Rivian, most builders do not nail their first project production date.
Those screaming Rivian has no hope of hitting the $45,000 retail price target I think are ignoring what CATL and BYD said earlier this year when they projected battery costs dropping by 50% this year. I think that can be a general industry guide that battery costs are falling for just about every battery builder and thus reducing costs for EV builders. We have seen EV tech and EV parts suppliers and evolve and grow a ton just in the past five years. That alone will be a huge help to Rivian reaching their price goal. RJ seems to be really pushing the simplify mindset that has driven the Tesla company culture for so many years. The nice thing is RJ is willing to moderate some areas so it does not feel so extreme. No matter how good Tesla vehicles might be, going from a traditional ICE vehicle to a Model Y can seem like a dramatic change. Rivian offers something less scary to those who are not ready to dump 98% of the buttons from the interior of their vehicle. Not to mention the Rivian style does not scream EV, it has more of a traditional style overall. Yes the very front is different, but better then the insane waterfall grill Lexus on put on the front of their ICE SUVs.
Good luck to the Rivian team. Hope they are able to survive the upcoming competition and truly lock down their place for the next few decades. Lucid feels like they are driving off a cliff, but Rivian really seems to building that strong foundation, but they really need to execute at a high level over the next few years to make it. Failure could mean no more Rivian as an independent builder, which would be sad. The brand will likely live on for a very long time. If Fisker keeps getting new life, Rivian will easily, but I hope it does not go under.

I like Rivian, and like most Tesla investors I’m rooting for them. They make decent products and are so much more impressive and exciting than the old guard manufacturers. But their finances are a disaster, and not yet looking like improving.
@@edwardhackett-jones8126 100% agree. The Rivian is a great truck, but Rivian has not provided enough insight on how they can reduce their cost with more that 60% and deliver a R2 that are close to the R1.

I wish he would have answered her 2nd to last question. It was a great question. He just threw out lots of words like a politician. He was fortunate she didn’t follow up on his non answer. I like RJ. I have a very early R1T that I love, it’s amazing. But he needs to start selling a lot of cars and at a profit. Soon. I wish him well.
Oh and if the Illinois plant can handle demand for Vans, R1T, R1S and R2. You don’t have much demand. Sadly. Really rooting for Rivian.

Did he confirm R1 can support AC home backup? Was clear that R2 will.
I took away that both R2 and R1 *will* have bidirectional AC charging.
He didn’t say the same for existing R1s. He has however said R1s are “capable“ of DC bidirectional, whatever that means. I know of nobody that is bidirectional charging their rivian.
I’m sensing they are going all in on AC bidirectional and walking away from the more complicated DC bidirectional charging.
One question for RJ: how many Wh/mile are you targeting for R2/3? This will give us an idea of battery pack sizes to achieve stated range.

Really excited for the R3 and R3X much more than any other Rivian product and more than other EVs. I hope they make it especially long enough to get those into production. The R2 will help but they got to get going on production and deliveries. A great product that never makes it to market is unfortunate.
At current cash burn rates they need another 8bill or so for that to happen. I think they get absorbed or bought at in mid 2025 when cash is down to under 2billion left. 👍🏻

R2 was the first EV that I knew I wanted to daily at first sight.
Rivian is my other favourite company. Let Tesla do the R&D and copy the best out there. I like their direction and will watch with interest.

I have had zero interest in an EV until I saw the R3x. Please try to make the available in late 2025!
Think why it's 2026 for R2 is because of retooling of the plant in Normal and the delay of the plant in GA to save $2.2B. No launch window exists for R3/X
I'd love to consider an EV like Rivian but I can't until a viable national infrastructure is in place (for charging). At the condo where I live there would be no way to charge it at home.
Is it possible Rivian eventually is unable to raise any more money? I've never seen a company raise so much money in such a short period of time with no profit forecast. In '21, Rivian raised $12 bill via IPO. In '23, Rivian issued $3.2 bill via convertible notes. Rivian's debt now stands at $4.4 bill. Rivian's '23 GAAP loss was $5.4 bill. Given these massive losses, on top of the need to raise billions more to bring out the R2, on top of 963 mill shares already outstanding, I just don't see how Rivian raises any more money before declaring bankruptcy
What's the big deal about the rear vented windows? That sort of thing as been done for decades and decades. Is it cool because it's automated now?? Not sure if I understand the hype.

Why charge port on the opposite side of Tesla???
I read somewhere else that this allows for curbside charging like when you are parallel parked along a street. If port is on driver side of door, this sticks out into traffic.

So am I hearing that R2 will be 800 Volt architecture and share this with R1 series vehicles? RJ doesn't quite come out and say it but then Sue follows up and says 800 Volt. This is great if it is can this be confirmed?
If you're going to interview someone don't constantly agree and shake head yes. If you know the answers. You should be interviewed.
