so true and i bet quite a lot of guys who needed a new bike or who are on the point of getting their first bike are now searching for oneof those 2 bikes. It is just so much more relatable than guys riding 40k bikes on some racetrack in spain, while the rest of Europe is having a miserable winter
ninja postman I looked into buying a new R1 ... or one under 1k miles and I just can't justify the fricken insurance! 3k! 3! It's most likely because I've had my full bike licence for 1 year but still haha
Aside from the obvious depreciation an liklihood of dropping, it's the third reason I always recommend newbies get used bikes. Sure you can take your bike to the shop for every little thing, but the reality is that bikes are so easy to work on, it just makes sense to do a lot of the work yourself. So I recommend newbies get cheap smaller bikes and just learn to do as much as they can bit by bit. I staeted on a 13 year old 125 and had that thing to bits all the time. By doing that you just get a really good foundation. My second bike was a 2 year old ZX6R - no way I'd wanted to have learnt even basic maintenance on that lol
@@eberbacher007 lol..as a matter of fact. ...im lookihg at a zx-7 right now..actually several of them in different states of disrepair..but im gonna have one
When I was in high school in the early 90’s that green Ninja was one of my favorite jizz machines. And jizzing back then was a much bigger deal than the standard daily routine it is now.
really enjoying this series, I would 100% replace that radiator though, it looks like its been through a lot, and considering how africa could be, I think its worth the extra investment.
Pretty sure I've got a new Renthal front sprocket hanging around if you want one. Also, beat me to it with the ride height. I also put my forks through the yoke by 10mm which helped being 6ft4 too. A v+h advancer just nips up throttle response if you can find one; I need to see what I've got still, might have that too. Cosmstically, you can take the middle part of the rear indicators stem from each side and install it behind the reg plate. It just looks nicer and less lancaster bomber from behind. Might be a possible weight save option available too. Good work Chris. #teamninja
It's probably the cheapest and best option to get the seat reupholstered with some memory foam and gel inserts and extra padding to give you more leg room.
My kitten, Willow, sat on my lap and watched the entire thing with seemingly genuine interest then, at the end, touched the Team Ninja logo! Square on, no ambiguity! Little Willow is Team Ninja!
Rather than splash out for an after market shock, why don’t you have the stock shock and forks serviced? Oh and the fork pitting at the bottom of the stancions may cause you some big problems later on bad roads/ pot holes. It will damage the seals and cause the fork oil to leak onto the brakes and tyres. And whilst you’re in there, lube up the swingarm/linkage bearings. They could even be the cause of the harsh ride.
Shaolinfist83 yer I never thought of that until you mentioned it.... pretty much the same story with the 99 cbr 600’s too if I remember correctly? I’m Loving this series but I think barons choices to put the bike on a diet rather than making it mechanically sound may come back to haunt him.
That's a great point - I had a SRAD 750 (sorry Chris), Allbike Engineering in Greenwich serviced the shock and forks for £250 made a big difference for not much money
You can clean up your fork stanchions with some 2k and 3k sandpaper. You don’t need to flatten out the scratches, just round off any sharp edges you can feel with your fingernail
This isn't a good idea as you will wear down the thin layer of chrome which is going to cause even more issues for your fork seals as the diameter of the metal is changing.
i want to thank you guys for doing this budget bike battle, i currently own a zx6r 2001 in ROI its blue but i love this green zx7r good to know the oldies are still relevant in terms of power :)
Fantastic bikes. Sold mine last year. Heavy bikes but so stable and planted. I had a zx7r poster on my bedroom wall as a teenager. I managed buy the exact one as in my poster (green/purple) a few of years ago... They say you should never meet your hero's but the ZX7R didn't disappoint.
I had a 7R twenty years ago...R827 AAY where are you now! I had it for 2 years & loved it, kinda “cut my teeth” on that bike & learnt a lot. Definitely raise the ride height, transformed the handling (from a fuzzy memory), it was easy enough to do & I got the settings from an article in a Performance Bikes (Gus & Ronnie....my fookin hero’s back then!). Did my 1st trackday, foreign trip & knee down on that bike. Traded it for a 4XV R1, that was bloody epic too....7R’s still look great to me too. Great vids 👍
Nice one, ironically I've got a ZX7R and 4XV R1. Done a trackday on my 7R and it was great, front end was solid and still had enough grunt. The R1 feels like a 600 compared, front end lifts under throttle all the time but there both awesome in their own right.
had the ZX7RRP1 back in 1996. sold it off with great regrets bcos my license was suspended :( It was a rock solid bike, gave me great confidence even when going down on the highway hitting redline in 6th gear (>280kmh)!
Change your fluids? Seems like and easy, unexpensive mod that is going to provide you with some garantees, if not some enhancement. I'm thinking radiator and fork fluids especially. You might as well want to bleed your brakes, along these lines. That might even be a problem solver.
Man I have a pic of me siting on this exact bike in 1996, as a 17 year old kid it was my dream bike! A green zx7r next to a purple gsxr600 I was hooked, I tub bought a brand new 1997 Yamaha yzf600r the step up from the fzr with a factory seatcowl cover lol. Hooked ever since! Now 11 bikes later owning a new 2017 FZ10 yamaha (mt10) the addiction continues with the most fun bike ive ever owned! U guys are awesome! Hello from the states!
I've done a similar thing for weight loss with my 96 CBR600. Including a lithium battery, I've dropped an easy 8.6KG. This does include a full system with CF end can. Something to consider, a full ally bolt kit for the fairing from Probolt. Cheap, and light :) . Also, keep the bike!!! You know you can use the crank from an earlier ZXR750. Drops right in, and strokes the capacity. Do a big bore, and I think it goes to 880cc relatively cheaply.
Cleaning the cloudy windshield would be a good little diy job. No toothpaste needed..there’s a sand paper method I’ve seen which cleans up car headlights. You might be able to see out of it then and even add value ;)
Have you looked at riser plates for your rearsets? You can use them to drop the peg height as well as rise. Should be no more than £30 on eBay. Not used them myself, but they make sense, will have to fiddle with the shift rod though. If you prefab an aluminium hanger for the pipe you can also get rid of pillion pegs - easy 1.5 kg.
I had a 2000 ZX7 a few years ago. came to me with some damage and a busted overflow bottle. Only place I could find a good one was in UK... Cradley if i remember correctly. only issue i ever had was heat from headers melted the wiring harness above and in front of the engine.
Chris: "This time, I'm not going to bling it. And I do mean it. This time." Come on man! I know it's the wrong year, but Scott Russell replica for the Africa trip! Mind you, you've only got to trundle there. As any fule no, all the blue SRADs have been thrashed like they're on punishtube. 2nd gear pinion or output shaft main bearing, or any one of a thousand stupid electrical bollix - sidestand cutout switch, if it's still on there, would be my fave. One of them's bound to happen.
I think the older zx7r has these green tubes if I remember correctly they went from gas tank to front end somewhere? I thought it looked so cool. Born 81 seen a lot of cool bikes growing up 😂
Jack up the ride height, if you havent allready. For the seat, take of the oem seat cover and buy a bit harder and thicker foam. It works, i have tested and doesnt cost much at all... The stock seat cover can be stretched over to an 10mm taller and harder foam!
This BBB series has to be the best real world review about both these bikes. Loving them but frustrating maintenance issues appear. After updating the maintenance, loving them again. Hi guys I like this videos that you're doing about the zx7r it's absolutely gorgeous looking bike. I hope you do more videos on this bike there's not many videos on TH-cam. Keep up the good work guys
Gbmoto and danmoto do adjustable rear sets for £190 on ebay. Not sure it'll make a huge difference though tbh. I'm 5'8 and my zxr750 is painfully uncomfortable on longer rides even with the pegs moved.

If you raise the seat pad you effectivly lower the bars, which will be tough on your back over long distances.
And his wrists. He'll need those in the future.

Andre Chiesa great tip thanks👍
No problem! Look up a video before you do it because there’s a way to rotate the stanchion to make sure you don’t sand the tube flat
This isn't a good idea as you will wear down the thin layer of chrome which is going to cause even more issues for your fork seals as the diameter of the metal is changing.

Steady on Baron! Only needs to make it there. Technically speed limits limit you both to the same speed. Don’t get too crazy with weight savings.
Probably worth looking at the radiator more than a 0.5kg here or there.
For your rear sets try 'Harris' I got a set for my 2004 zx10r about a year ago.
AHH THAT EXPLAINS THE NEW BIKE BATTLE VIDEO AS YOU WERE BOTH WRECKED 👏🏼✌🏻

Even if you use an AirHawk for you're seat, comfy and it jack you up a bit
Still one of the best looking bikes ever made

Awesome thanks man !
Nice trip!

that air filter seems to be in backwards. also the zx9r E1/2 have height adjustable shocks too

Ps... double bloody decker ☺️.......ps AGAIN.....you haven’t said it in like.....ages 🤪😂
This needs a ZX9R (b model) engine.
