    *Keep in mind that most people on anti-anxiety medication don't have sudden suicidal or homicidal urges. Mass murderers are an incredibly small percentage of people. I mean INCREDIBLY small. There have to be a lot more things in place to lead a person to do something like that. If you're on anti-anxiety medication, take your proper dosage. And if you experience strange thoughts like wanting to self-harm, tell your doctor IMMEDIATELY! It could be the medication, and a dosage change or a switch over to another medication could fix that problem! Be smart!*

      Rob DykeIn my honest opinion is that it not only by medication but also the fact on genes and personal tolerance level. Even the way they think is important cause it tells a lot on person's character. Also society influence and the environment plays an vital role in this progression towards mass homicides. We have to be extremely cautious around if any guy shows these any traits of such potential catastrophe

      It's not always the medicine in my opinion, dealing with kids it's the children at the schools bullying the children everyday that starts the depression then at one point they just snap, implosive people are more serious than explosive people, implosive just holds there anger in over a period of time until it explodes. Explosive yells and such so watch out for those "shy" people they have feelings to.

      roslan bayu What do you mean? Of course it doesn’t look the same. In one case a plane crashed
      into an urban environment and in the other it was just mountain side. Most of
      the 911 wreckage was buried under debris from the buildings.

    It's sad that that many people had to die for us to realize that depression is a serious mental illness. I've lived with it all my life and everytime I would tell someone about it they would tell me to stop feeling sorry for myself. Only just recently have people started to actually realize just how bad my depression is...a

    I think mental health screenings need to be more of a priority. Many people with mental illness won't seek help before something potential fatal may happen, i think if we reach out more instead of pretending it doesn't exist, it would make it at least a bit better. Will there always be evil people, is my question...

      People love to say that mental health screenings are the answer to so many problems... serial killers, depressed pilots etc... while im not against screening, let me play devils advocate.
      Say we make a mental health screening part of a yearly physical. Who gets to dictate what and what isnt mentally healthy? Besides the obvious of couse. But then again the obviously mentally ill arent really the issue. How would a wide scale screening catch a serial killer for example, who are fantastic at hiding symptoms. Give an empathy test? But then what about those who are naturally less empathetic but arent killers. Medicate them? Not to mention the massive spike in people being dosed with psychotropic drugs akin to the mass prescription of anti depressants and adhd medicine.

    I am a man who has suffered from depression and anxiety all my life, I am also a Law Enforcement Officer working in the Department of Corrections and Owen firearms here in the U.S.A. the difference from me and these psychopaths is I never in my mind would consider harming another human being. I sought help when I felt I needed it and at low points in my life if I or my family and/or friends thought my firearms may come to the jeopardy of my own physical well being, I willingly relinquished then till everyone, including myself knew I was in stable sound peace of mind. I have also spoken with doctors and asked them their professional opinions of they would think a man in my situation should own, posses or operate firearms and none felt that I would or will ever become a safety hazard to myself or anyone else with the precautions we have set in place for the times I feel less than happy. I do believe as I deal with criminals on a daily basis know evil is out there, but also know there are ways to prevent these tragities we now hear about on almost a daily. If you know a family, friend or co-worker that seems to be on the brink of something like in the stories Rob has spoken about in this video, then speak up and reach out. Or if you think you may one day get to that point, know it's not needed, help is out there. I've personally felt helpless, hopeless and lost. But having the right structure and support changed all of that. Don't give up on yourself and feel that taking it out on the world is the answer.

    It's an interesting topic to consider. Medications are good for the mentally ill (like myself) but they do carry some horrible side effects. Anything that works to change your overall brain chemistry is going to have some unwarranted responses. Depending on the person and what they are being treated for. I am really glad you brought this video up, Rob. As it's an issue that doesn't always get thought about too much.

      Nate i wish it was easier to find good psychiatrists. i've had so many that gave me the wrong kind of meds without even reading the correct chart. no lies. i was incorrectly diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 13 and loaded up with heavy medication that made me so delusional that at one point i started thinking it was fake and overdosed so badly that i technically died and was in a coma for 3 days. thankfully i have been re-diagnosed properly now and surprise to no one that idiot had no idea what was going on before. i do rely on several medications to treat my psychosis and personality/anxiety disorders and depression but now i have a wonderful doctor who collaborates her efforts with my therapist for the most successful treatment i could have imagined. i don't know if you live in the US, but i have medicaid and as much as it is necessary, the majority of the care you can receive is of poor quality and you are treated like scum sadly. i am one of the lucky ones who have enough knowledge and experience with the system and my own mental functions that i can now mostly avoid the shittier situations, but that isn't the case for most. there should be a way for us to be heard and taken seriously instead of being written off as "crazy" or stupid for having a mental illness. however i am glad that i've never been allowed a gun, because there are times when i will admit that i could be so unaware during an episode that i am afraid of what would happen. so, i think both are very important, though the mental health screenings should be a priority if you ask me.

    • @chaoszonenate
      @chaoszonenate 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, sometimes finding a good doctor can be hard. They were a bit TOO medication happy when I was in inpatient. They asked me if I wanted an Ambien ontop of my other TWO sedatives and I declined, saying I would be comatose enough as it was. When ti comes to mental health we are still trying to fill in the blanks and patch up the cracks.

      yeah my old psychiatrist (rafael tatay by the way, avoid him at all costs if you want to keep your brain intact lol) had me on 800mg of seroquel per day which is the max legal dosage and he said he wanted to bump it up to 1,200mg, so i said fuck him and saw someone else. my new doctor was absolutely horrified when i told her what he would prescribe me. he should lose his fucking license.

    Your character for your "darkside" videos is great. You put off this "I've seen, learned and know too much worldy vibe". It's like your telling us things to try to give us understanding and knowledge... but there is a sarcastic dry almost corny "I'm telling you but you probably wont remember this to save your own life" flavor to it that just makes it wonderfully entertaining.

      +SonofSethoitae Idk about that. In many of the cases I've seen, the perpetrators have some SERIOUS issues. People like Seung Hui Cho, Jared Loughner, James Holmes, John Russell Houser, Dylan Klebold/Eric Harris, for instance, all had some SERIOUS issues, and there were PLENTY of signs prior to their kililng sprees which hinted toward their derangement and potential to do what they did. They didn't just flip out one day out of nowhere. They planned their attacks, and in many cases, they wrote manifestos or recorded video speaking their RIDICULOUSLY INSANE nonsense explaining their motivations.

      Anyone is capable of horrific acts. Everyone starts as a relatively innocent child. Your growing up years do have a great impact on who you become, but I know personally 13 out of 15 kids who came from a horrific background who are now doing excellently. The one really went off the deep end, and the other had a bad number of years but is doing very well. How bad things are handled also have a major part to play. Take Hitler for example. He blamed all his failures on the Jews and became who he was

    Thank you for talking about this in depth. Most of the time the media just portrays people with mental illnesses as crazy and dangerous and as someone who has been suffering from depression for 7 years this just makes me incredibly sad. I would never willingly hurt anyone and I don't condone any kind of violence. I'm grateful for the insight you gave us by mentioning all the other factors that lead to people commiting such horrendous crimes and not just blaming it on mental illnesses.

  • @StandAsYouAre
    @StandAsYouAre 9 ปีที่แล้ว +108

    I think both are important. But with mental health screenings there needs to be the support for people with mental illnesses. Otherwise it's just making a bad situation worse. And unfortunately we do live in a world where governments loves to cut corners and save nickels and dimes by cancelling programs which can help people get their lives back on track.

    • @zellybrat1462
      @zellybrat1462 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      People refuse to give support to those with mental health issues because they fear what they don't understand. That's why they cut funding. That's also another reason why a lot of times people with BPD can't get to the therapy designed to help them learn to cope with their disorder. Their insurance won't pay for it. It's a hard road for those with mental illness and until someone takes a stand, no one will get the help they deserve

      WhenTheSkyTurnsDark I'll be honest, I never thought much about this.But coming from my own perspective, I've had a traumatic brain injury that nearly costed my life.
      To say that gun restriction is needed is absurd to me. I think mental health screening is much more needed. Just because there are a few bad eggs in the basket doesn't mean you throw them all out.
      It sounds absurd, but there's been many occasions that law-abiding citizens do stop killings and thieves.
      I'm not saying everybody should be armed- but majority of these mass murders are in areas that are typically "safe" for the mass murderer to get away with it until the police arrive (which is typically 30 minutes.) The mass killers know the perfect locations to make their violent acts in- "gun-free" zones. They know that they are going to commit a terrible act and want it to go on without a hitch. So they choose for the easiest targets and best place to commit their crimes.

  • @Lainehh
    @Lainehh 9 ปีที่แล้ว +238

    Hey, so I have a few things to add to the discussion;
    Firstly, in an American context, there's a never-ending debate over whether they should ban guns (it's not going to make the situation any better, if someone has decided they're going to murder other people they'll find a gun/weapon somewhere). I can not help but notice how frightening the American media is. I'm Irish and our national broadcaster is pretty banal, however American TV is scary. Take for example a news channel informing everyone that there is a flu outbreak. Now, if that were broadcasted in Ireland we'd be shown clips of a few people in bed with a few cringy transitions and slides of random information. But in America, whoah, it would be like watching some kind of sci-fi horror flick (I'm not hypothesizing here, I've seen this kind of stuff).
    What I'm trying to say is that from an outsiders perspective, the American media is very, very good at creating hysteria even in the smallest proportions. A great example is Bush's 'war on terrorism' when quite frankly, it is he who is the war criminal (I'm not in any way saying that what happened in New York on 9/11 wasn't awful, but seriously, look into it and see what America was up to in the middle east).
    Basically what I'm saying it is seems to me that the media has everyone on edge and scared shitless. Combine this with a lack of mental health care and you have a recipe for disaster. Of course there's other factors too however I don't think the debate should revolve around guns. Debate should revolve around mental health, education around mental health and media sensationalism taken too far.
    That's my two cents. Feel free to debate.

      You pretty much nailed it. That's exactly the reason why I don't watch the news (and many other reasons). When Ebola hit the scene, I was waiting for it to blow over. The first news thing I saw on it when browsing through channels was a chart showing how many people it would spread to in a span of 2 months and how many would die. I admit it scared me a little. I forgot about it after a few months after endless coverage of it and remembered it a few weeks ago on a video discussing 2014. There has been no coverage of Ebola since that scare. It just went away.
      I'm not really sure how I feel about American news. On one hand, things like Ebola, shootings, bombings, etc should be covered. I'm sure if they didn't make it sound like a big deal then people would freak out for not covering such atrocities, but can they cover the story without the full intent of scaring the shit out of the public? When the Virginia Tech shooter couldn't be found, my schools shut EVERYTHING down. I live in South Dakota and the media said he could literally be anywhere. We heard that my little brother's school was evacuated because they heard a gunshot. Our news station was suddenly covering the story of the VT shooter possibly being in one of our Elemenary Schools. They also covered a kid who went missing and said he was either dead or a hostage. The next day, we learned that the gunshot heard was a table collapsing over and the kid was hiding in a bush for hours because he thought he was in trouble. It was all my school could talk about for 3 days.

    This is very common actually, a lot of antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds have what is called a "black box warning". In other words, antidepressants meant to get rid of suicidal thoughts can cause you to become suicidal...

    • @KoshVader
      @KoshVader 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +The Phantom Safety Pin You can get so depressed that you're not motivated to commit suicide even if you have the thoughts. The meds give you back motivation which may drive you to suicide but after a while the thoughts may recede.

      @ThePhantomSafetyPin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +KoshVader The fortunate thing is that most people with clinical depression will, eventually, find a medicine that works or will seek another option. Depression is a difficult and tricky thing to deal with, as is any mental illness. For some (like me) becoming suicidal can be a wake-up call. For others, that feeling never goes away even with medicine.
      I will post this here for anyone who is dealing with suicidal thoughts, or perhaps having trouble with depression or anxiety. If you're suffering with these thoughts, please remember you are NOT alone. It might not feel like it now, but the agony you're feeling won't be forever. Please, reach out to someone and get help. Here is a suicide prevention hotline (not sure of the number in other countries, but here it is for the US): www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org

    When a mass murder or suicide or anything like this happens, people want to be able to blame one thing. They want to be able to say 'the medication made her do this, let's not use this medication' or 'Violet video games made him do this, let's ban/restrict violent video games.' It's just not as simple as this. While better regulations or banning some of the factors that lead to the crime may help, there will still be people who commit these crimes.
    Human behaviour is one of the hardest things to predict, yet we rely on doctors and psychs and teachers to predict it and get angry when they miss something or there wasn't anything there to begin with. Honestly, more accessible and cheaper mental health services are a good place to start. What about the people who are good at pretending and lying to psychs though? And what about the people who do these things without ever showing signs of mental illness?
    While I know that America isn't the only country with this kind of crime, it's definitely the place where it seems to happen the most. Easy access to guns is definitely a factor, and there's no denying that Australia's gun crime numbers have massively decreased since stricter gun laws were brought in after the Port Arthur Massacre. I feel like the culture around men and guns and violence needs to be looked at, as well as mental illness/genetics. I can't recall/find who said this, but I think it's fitting in a lot of these cases, "His genetics load the gun, his psychology aims it, and the environment pulls the trigger."

      Mikayla Mackenzie Australias gun violence didnt go down BECAUSE of the ban after Port Arthur...... i hate that people dont look closer at the issues. It was going down already BEFORE Port Arthur....... SAME as the United States. Which has gone down consistently since 1991 WITHOUT a gun ban........gun control is not proven to correlate to crime control. It went down in America and Australia. Starting at around 90, 91. One had a gun ban and one didnt.
      Also look at Mexico and Brazil..... very restrictive gun control..... blew their crime numbers way up. To the point Brazil is considering repealing all gun control and adding a 2nd amendment right type amendment.
      And look at the UK who love to talk about US and guns, missing the irony of that. Their overall violent crimes and homicides went UP after gun ban. It spiked and eventually started coming down, but is still couple percentage points above where it was when ban was enacted. In other words no years have had lower homicide rates than the year Ban was enacted.
      Yet US has halved their Homicide Rate since 1991. ........ but please tell us more how a country with half the worlds guns.......... is ironically the one that has halved its homicide rate without any ban.....is the crazy country

      Something people seem to think silly, but choose to ignore is that Australia is an island. A very very big island. However, it’s separated from places that would bring weapons illegally into the country. The largest sources of illegal drugs and weapons in this country come from Mexico. If guns were completed banned in the United States, it wouldn’t stop the violence

    Having depression and anxiety myself, I still think mental health screenings would be more beneficial than gun control. As is commonly said, it's not the gun doing the killing, it's the person holding it. Considering I've experienced the extremities of both depression and anxiety as well as minor bouts of mania, I think I can say how debilitating it really can be. And how much it can alter the mind to think or do things it normally wouldn't.
    I believe there are genuinely bad people out there, but I'm not sure all killers = bad dudes. Keep in mind, though, that I'm not saying killing people is an acceptable action and can be forgiven.

    Rob, I'm glad that you decided to do this video, not enough people talk about mental illness and want to act like it doesn't exist even when they have relatives that suffer from it. Only when something tragic happens to them that they want to start to talk about it and try to change the system. I'm not talking about everyone, just those select people that choose to turn a blind eye, depression is a real disease I have know that since I was a child. At one point in time I suffered from it and was able to get past it, but each individual is different, I hope that as a society we will start to talk openly about it more. And something can be done to help people get the proper care they need, and one more thing, people need to stop. Making people feel ashamed of suffering from depression and other mental illnesses that is one way to get started with helping people.

    Anyone can take up a weapon, but only a mentally unbalanced person (or someone with a psychological disorder) would take up that weapon and use it to injure or kill another human being. Especially another human being that they have no connection with or someone they have a deeper connection with, such as a spouse or parent.

That is the point of our 2nd Amendment. It may be a shame that occasional crazies hurt people but I am one of millions of armed citizens, Ill defend myself. There is no perfect world, either you have citizens who are the last firewall againat tyranny or you have suicidal murderers who use fire, or planes or cars to kill people but also a government with absolute power that can be infiltrated with nut jobs and citizens are helpless to do anything about it.

    I personally think Andreas didn't even consider the other people on the plane, and here's why. I've suffered from depression in the past, and, at times I've wanted to kill myself. So trust me when I say, it's hard not to, and I was not a teenager when I dealt with it, not having any real problems. But back to my point, I don't think he even thought about the fact that 150 people would die with him, he probably just thought he had nothing left to live for, and killed himself, so I don't even think he should be considered a mass murderer, maybe a manslaughterer

    • @BjornV1994
      @BjornV1994 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      KaPowSplat Althought a case could be made for manslaughter by suicide, the way he planned everything and how anything played out seem to imply mass murder for notorioty ("If you are a nobody in life, maybe in death people will start to notice you...")-He knew it would only be a matter of time before Lufthansa and Germanwings learned of his condition, ending his career. He could have killed himself in his home, and nobody else would been hurt. Yet he decided to fly the plane.
      -He took over the plane when his colleague went to the toilet, he locked the pilot out and kept ignoring him as he screamed at him and tried to break open the door with an ax. This would imply Andreas knew every well what he was doing, and was aware that he was about to kill 150 people.
      -One theory about Andreas (I don't know if it has been proven or it can be proven) is the suggestion that he might have put some laxative medication in the drink of the other pilot, so he would to go to the toilet during mid-flight, an essential part of the plan to crash the plane.
      Not every depressed person will simply commit suicide, some want to inform the world of what they have done to that person, namely by taking dozens of people with them in their fall...

      First off I'm glad you got through your hard times. I also have suffered clinical depression and have unfortunately had a botched attempt at taking my life. I think there is a definite distinction here between an otherwise sane minded person being so depressed they want to die and a person who is clearly sociopathic becoming suicidal and not only not caring how many people go with them but wanting to take as many as possible.

    • @tobyOwenby
      @tobyOwenby 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +MaPowSplat, that's your opinion, I respect that....but in my opinion it doesn't hold water....first, his doctor wrote him a note saying he was "unfit" to work that day, he didn't just ignore it, as if he forgot, he took the time to tear it up and disregard! Second...he had planned this entire event, acting all normal with the other pilot for the first part of the flight, just waiting on the pilot to leave the cockpit, and the second he does leave...he gets up and locks the door, on the recordings you could hear he was still alive and listening to the pilot and other trying to get back in but he never said a word.
      So in my opinion, every soul on that plane was on his mind, and he figured if he couldn't live happy then neither should they, and that's murder, it's extremely sad but very true. Depression effects everyone different and there are different levels, I am in a deep depression myself, I'm not suicidal, but there have been times I wish I was dead. Suicide is against my beliefs and I know I could never do it, I just can't imagine how someone could think innocent people are responsible and deserve to die just because there life is in a rut?
      Again, this is only my opinion.

I don't want to see more gun restrictions, however, I didn't have a lot of knowledge about mental health screening and how that could help especially since most of the mass-murders seem kinda random. They want attention, they grab the first gun they see whether a shotgun, rifle, or pistol and start shooting with the shock value as they main goal. This gave me a lot more insight on how mental health can have more involvement than just putting tighter gun restrictions. Great video.

    Yes! Thank you for bringing up this subject. It MUST be talked about. A lot of people like myself, have several severe mental illnesses. For instance, someone could have chronic complex PTSD, panic disorder, bipolar and agoraphobia. No studies have been done on the specific interactions between most, if not all, of the medicines needed for that persons drug cocktail. We dont know the long term side effects of this mutant drug. That scared the crap out of me.

  • @Hells_Chance

    I suffer from depression/anxiety and refuse to take any anti-depressants because of the side affects. I prefer to sit back smoke some medicinal cannabis and just chill. Doctors hand out anti depressants like candy, yet we don't know the long term side affects. If one doesn't work, you're put on another one instead and sometimes combinations. When you start combining a drug with many disturbing side affects with another one of it's kind, you may as well be playing russian roulette.

      GPS know when you shouldn't mix two medications together (for the most part). I take 60mg of prozac and have been taking prozac since I was 10 years old, and honestly, it probably saved my life. Sure there are different side effects according to the persons brain chemistry, and I'd much rather be tired then depressed, no doubt. I would go on prescribed weed if I could, but that's simply illegal here. You just have to go with the best option, despite the best option not being all that great.

    • @Hells_Chance
      @Hells_Chance 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gene Blake Yeah I agree, they work for some, but if you have spend a long period of time finding the 'right' anti depressant for you, the odds are all of the other anti depressants have messed with your brain chemistry in some sort of way. Also, sometimes switching between medicines causes a combination of both if you take before the first is out of your system. Like cymbalta to effexor, that's a horrible switch that can lead to a coma or death. Just do your research if switching and you should be fine.. but I feel safer not taking them and having to take them for the rest, if not a good portion of my life.

A lot of people who are depressed use common law instead of guns or weapons. They are the ones the police are afraid of.

    Most times, when people on medication for anxiety/depression, it isn't really the medicine that causes them to have violent or suicidal thoughts. They already have them. The medication is to help motivate them, normally to get over the anxiety/depression, but if not in the correct dosage, it can motivate someone just enough for them to go through with something they were thinking. In the case of depression, it makes you not want to do anything, yet still want to die. As soon as you get motivation, yet still want to die, you'll actually have the 'energy' to go through with it.

    I feel like gun ownership should be limited to hunting rifles/shotguns and manual 9mm pistols. All automatic and semi-automatic weapons should be illegal for civilians to own. In addition, a background check before purchase should be mandatory, even at gun shows. The background check should cover both criminal activities and mental illness. These restrictions won't prevent all gun violence, but I feel like they would decrease shootings.

    • @122killerkid
      @122killerkid 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      wolfiecommander
      1) Limiting the ownership of firearms of Americans who legally own their firearms to just hunting rifles, shotguns, and 9mm handguns is absurd. Just because you pass a law that makes it so Americans ( who legally own their firearms ) can only own those guns criminals will still get them. They are already breaking laws so illegally obtaining a gun will be no different to them. You will be hurting everyone but criminals/potential criminals with such a thing.
      2) Automatic weapons in the United States requires a machine gun license ( which in most states is near impossible to get ) and you typically go through a long process with the federal government. On top of that you have to register all of your firearms and pay annually to keep your ability to own such firearms.
      3) Semi-Automatic sporting rifles should remain legal for civilians to own. The most common firearms in these mass-shootings is handguns and occasionally shotguns. There is literally no reason to try and make it illegal to own any semi-automatic sporting rifles.
      4) When you say "Semi-Automatic weapons" you forget that there are Semi-Automatic shotguns and hunting rifles out there. While it is completely overkill in some states you can hunt with a Barrett M82 which is Semi-automatic rifle that shoots .50 BMG rounds.
      5) Most states require a background check before you purchase a firearm and you do have to present a valid license ( FID, LTC B, or LTC A ). While some states do not require this process or some stores just ignore this process overall it is mandatory. Also if you are a convicted felon or anything that mandates your firearms license be taken away you will not be able to purchase any firearm whatsoever.
      6) It's pretty much impossible to screen someone for mental illness when they are trying to purchase a gun. A person could show no signs of having a mental illness.
      7) Those restrictions would not decrease shootings whatsoever. Those kinds of restrictions would make it easier for those shootings to occur. There are quite a few examples of civilians stopping shootings with their own firearms.

    OMG I'm gettin' SICK of people talking about "gun bans". NOBODY is advocating for outright gun bans except a small percentage of people. The MAJORITY of people only ask for sensible gun controls like mental health screenings and removing certain loopholes, an honest debate. People keep muddying the waters by talking about "we can't ban guns" and using that as the reason why we can't enforce basic, sensible gun control methods. Everybody keeps talking about how we need to focus on mental health, which is OBVIOUSLY true. However, if you think that mentally-handicapped people or terrorists should have easy access to guns (many mass shooters bought their guns legally themselves or had their guns purchased legally by others), you might just be mentally handicapped yourself.

    Among my many groups, past and present, of associates, we've always had a saying about weapons.
    "Don't be afraid of the gun, be afraid of who's pointing it at you."
    I mean, gun restrictions might have a small effect on the number of murders yearly, but that only stops the accidental deaths.
    And while it's true that serial killers and mass murderers are a *very* small percentage of the population, just one of them has the potential to kill hundreds. I mean after all, what is it they say? "A single man can change the world"?
    And most likely with guns acquired through illegal means, or that were *already in their possession beforehand.*
    People should stop worrying about gun restrictions so much and focus on the mental health of the people.
    Because it doesn't just take a gun to kill. It takes a mindset, too.
    If you have anything to add, or to say, feel free too. I'm curious as to what you guys have to say, as well.

      Well said, my thoughts have been the same for a number of years. One thing to add, only law abiding citizens would turn in their guns. That means the majority is just more susceptible to crime. I have heard an interesting quote, something like “If only criminals keep their guns, I will become a criminal.”

  • @thorsebastion1768
    @thorsebastion1768 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Obviously, a person's predisposed neurological wiring plays a large part of in their participation in violent atrocities, but one environmental factor I never see discussed in depth is bullying. Many if not most of the mass killers were heavily and cruelly bullied when they were younger by either their parents or their classmates. They were humiliated and abused by almost everyone, and learned that they could never expect anything but abuse from their peers. This prevented many of them from ever forming bonds and thus integrating into society and probably instilled a great sense of general hatred for the people around them and society in general.
    It is very likely that being called mentally ill after being understandably depressed/angry at their abuse only further agitated them as it's denying their need for justice by placing the blame for their issues on "chemical imbalances" and "behavioral disorders". You cannot reasonably expect a person who has been bullied their entire life by a majority of their peers to turn around and value their own life, much less the lives of others. Hence the suicidal/homicidal desires are not opposed by respect or love for their fellow man. If you take a group of people and kick them and beat them, some will cower and submit and grow timid with depression and anxiety, but others will burn slow with hatred and strike out at a world they perceive as being completely hostile. And many innocent people are killed as a result.
    I am not trying to make excuses for the heinous behavior of these individuals, but am merely trying to give people some empathy into their motives, because if you do not know the proper cause of an illness you cannot find the cure. And I might draw some fire for saying this, but I kind of think these mass murderers are a force of twisted karma. How many of you watching this video can claim to have not picked on our stood by in apathy as someone else was heavily abused by their peers?
    In a sense we are creating mass murders, but I don't think it's for many of the reasons that are currently being listed.

    We need more mental health screenings over banning guns and taking care of others. I'm diagnosed with anxiety and depression and before I went on medication for it I had the urge and thoughts of committing suicide bc I was so numb I ended up getting help and I'm a lot better today on medication. The government needs to reform mental health and really take a harder approach on it.

      ***** I agree, but this kid didn't bother talking back, he bothered shooting everyone so obviously he did care what other people had to say.

    I completely understood what rob was saying about depression. I was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was around 13-14 (I'm almost 19 now) and I have been on anti anxiety/depressants since then. BUT rob was not defending this guy particularly, but he was saying that this man had more than clinical depression going on. Clinical depression is a mental illness, but one of the more easily treated ones. The whole point is that mental illness is very very complicated and complex.

    I suffer from severe anxiety and severe depression, caused by society, people bullying me, telling me i am worthless.. so while i do get angry i prefer to retreat into myself.. and avoid all people because as i have said "I know the monster i could become". I am under therapy at the moment.. 90% of all my troubles are caused by people and events, and me believing them, 10% i would say is myself.. the less i am around people the better i feel.. anxiety and depression is very individual..

    Having seen the "Mayday" episode about this crash, this episode of Seriously Strange is quite interesting. While Mayday focused a lot more on how he carried out the crash, with a little insight into why, this focuses on the potential why's a lot more in depth. Putting the two together, it makes for an interesting case to study.

    That video kind of scared me. I am suffering from depressions, taking anti-anxiety medicine, and have a track record of failed relationships (last one cheated on me). I never had any intention of killing anyone other than myself, but these facts sort of worry me...

    As a person who suffers from bipolar disorder, I do take medications. One thing I noticed though about psychiatrists is they don't evaluate the patient enough before prescribing medications. I suggest to anyone to see a psychologist first, and have them evaluate whether medication is needed. Also if you suffer from depression, and blame others for your issues, this is a sure sign that medication will probably make your situation worse. Self acceptance is the first thing to recovery.

    You can hear the Captain trying to batter down the cockpit door with the fire axe on the black box. But of course cockpit doors are nowadays impregnable. Yet Andreas just sits silently, his breathing becoming more heavy closer to impact. Utterly horrendous.

    As a psych major, I've been exposed to stories and statistics of abnormalities in human behavior resulting in both positive and negative outcomes of the individuals suffering. In addition I have been exposed to people hurting others who suffer from a mental illness. Those cases that resulted in death or serious injury are rare and I would like to encourage people to look into the warning signs of depression (since it is the most common mental illness) and other mental illnesses. If the entire world had information on mental illnesses, then we might have a chance in stoping the stigma that comes along with it. If we stop the stigma and approach it with understanding I believe we are half way with a cure.

    Medication alone is just not enough for some types of mental illnesses. Therapy and constant monitoring is needed too in a lot of cases. Besides which, everyone is an individual case and should be treated as such. There is no one answer. Health authorities are overwhelmed so become a bit lax in their treatments. People go unmedicated, or given the wrong meds, or inappropriate therapies..etc. It's a combination that sometimes results in stories talked about in this video. But as you said, these cases are very rare. Most people on meds for depression/ anxiety etc do not have such reactions.

    I have suffered from depression for most of my life and as a result I have been on and off different antidepressants, at the moment Im off. My last depressive episode was fairly severe and I was put on a pretty heavy duty antidepressant, one of the side effects was suicidal thoughts, which worried me because I have been suicidal in the past, after a period of time I was taken off my meds because I was at a place in my life where I was able to cope on my own. Mental health is a complicated issue and there is not a single answer, but everyone needs to be involved and informed in order to help those that need it.
