I beg you, DO more swearing! Just a couple here and there, I'm sure you'll find the perfect balance between professionally sounding and being "cool". paszmatyi I actually prefer Linus not swearing than him swearing every 5 seconds, also i don't think he swears in real life, it just....doesn't fit his personality....
LinusTechTips Haha xD Thank you for the laugh. XD But seriously, I have always wondered with popular tech reviewers. Does the company ship it out and you return it, or do you just buy it? Thank you in advance for the reply :)
I personally would never buy a blower style cooler, ever. I had one several times, and no matter what it was it was loud as fuck when it boosted up or was slightly hotter than normal. I will take the Windforce over reference any day of the week, I still prefer MSI though for customer support, RMA's, and performance. Cool, Quiet, Awesome!
Gigabyte has better cooling/io ports/looks. However it is also quite noisy at idle with 35% fan speed at about 1500RPM on the 3 fans. I had to send it back because in my silent PC it was noisy, probably won't bother most ppl though. The MSI GAMING version is also good at overclocking and 0db fans at idle
I'm starting to troll the online retailers for GTX 780 at clearance prices. I do this each time a new GPU comes out. Just buy the previous flag ship card dirt cheap.
zeus anoxia Make sure you don't pay more than $300 for a 780 otherwise it's not a good deal since the 970 is more powerful with more features for only $30-40 more.
I have been searching every day online for this card and I have yet to find one for purchase. I want it so badly, and now I want it even more that Linus got his hands on one and showed it off. Thank you so much for showcasing this card!
So you get 1-2 extra frames at the cost of like 100W of power. That inefficiency is ridiculous and totally messes up the whole 'performance per watt' gains that Maxwell brought.
***** No it's not. the true enthusiast has a water cooled system and will go for reference since the GPU blocks are more readily available. In my opinion this card missed the mark for air cooled system.
west weasel Did you miss the whole binning section of this video? Gigabyte have ensured that these GPUs can OC well, but with reference cards it's just luck.
who the fuck gives a shit about power consumption? like if you can afford being a part of the PC master race you better be damned sure you can pay the power bills too..... if you're worried about stuff like that don't buy a gaming PC.
Can't think of anything to comment so I'm just going to post a pancake recipe. 1 1/2 cups milk 1 egg 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups White Wings self-raising flour 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1/3 cup caster sugar 25g butter, melted Whisk milk, egg and vanilla together in a jug. Sift flour and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Stir in sugar. Make a well in centre. Add milk mixture. Whisk until just combined. Step 2 Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Brush pan with butter. Using 1/4 cup mixture per pancake, cook 2 pancakes for 3 to 4 minutes or until bubbles appear on surface. Turn and cook for 3 minutes or until cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Cover loosely with foil to keep warm. Repeat with remaining mixture, brushing pan with butter between batches. Serve.
its pretty good two of my friends have it and they are running bf4 and all these new games max settings 1080p 60+ frames per second and 60 frames is the lest i have ever seen them have
Good card, good cooler design, but you could say it's outdated. The ultimate test is to just play some of the more demanding games you like and see if you can crank it up enough to your likening. I definitely wouldn't upgrade unless going right to a 970/980 though. Getting a 700 series card would make zero sense for you, or really most people for that matter. Unless of course you find a good sale.
I have a very similar card, EVGA 660ti 3GB edition, and I'll be getting a 970 this Christmas. It's probably the best value between the 970 and the 980.
That all depends on how it does for what you use it for. If all you do is Minecraft then a 660 is overkill. If you're trying to max Skyrim at 1440p, it's not going to happen. Is my 760 old? Yes. But do I need to upgrade? No, because I run my games just fine. I wouldn't consider it outdated to you until you find yourself struggling to play your games at the settings you really want.
LITTLEBITS IS SO COOL!!! I found them when they released their Modular Synthesis kit and they're the BEST, so excited to see them sponsoring one of my fave channels =D
Can someone explain to me how different manufacturers can make the same card. Is it like Nvidia sells the chipset and then each manufacturer makes there own version of it?
Paradox The chipset are done by in-house engineering by Nvidia itself. The only difference are the aftermarket solutions such as cooling, IO, esthetic, VRAM manufacturer, and other minor things like size.
Same chip, different board. Think like a cpu on a motherboard, a reference card would be like a cheap z170 mobo with minimal extra features, where as this would be like a asus or msi board. Same goes for the coolers.
+Paradox Yes exactly, nvidia licenses the designs out and companies try to optimise the design with different PCB layouts and their own coolers for either a lower price or better performance
Anti Held That's normal I think. Is there a problem with the amount of noise or are you just worried about your card? If so, no need for that, your card is perfectly normal mate.
Just ordered me one of these bad boys. Got it with the free game preorder, selected FCR4 as the bundled option. Cannot wait for this to come in from newegg. Glad I ended up selecting them.
I have a 520w power supply from corsair running my Intel i7 2700k @ 4.4GHz and 16GB of DDR3 RAM @ 1600MHz, and have a GIGABYTE G1 GTX 970 and it runs just fine.
Why do people like to overclock stuff so much? I never OC my stuff. OCing just heats stuff up; which in turn wears down components, get loud fan noises (if you're air cooling), and consume more electricity. Plus, OCing tends to void warranties and create stability issues.
I'm on the same boat, I tend to be ok with the performance of my components on their stock conditions. I really don't feel the need to set my 660ti's clock higher for a 10-15fps difference but have to deal with higher temps, more noise, higher bills, possible instability and shorter life span. Unless you make a very low budget build (and want to get the most out of it), I don't see the point in overclocking.
People who don't use headphones would care about loudness as depending on how far away their computer is away from their desk, a loud graphics card can get rather annoying. the power consumption? as mentioned for total system draw, but also say I was upgrading to this, I would need to know how mush the card was gonna draw so i can get a PSU to compliment that.
Linus, your videos on graphics cards lately have been absolutely amazing! Love watching your team's content as always. Also, what an amazing card! Seriously considering an upgrade from my Windforce GTX760 (with its ugly aluminum piece sticking out of it lol).
***** That is a Canadian accent through and through. The Canadian accent is incredibly similar to the general American accent, almost identical. This is because Canada is right above the USA. Canada used to be a French colony and now it's basically a British colony. So it is weird that Canadians 'almost' have American accents.
I have one of these on preorder, and I can't say I feel any regret at all. Every review I see for it fails to find many (if any) flaws with it, i'm definitely looking forward to replacing my crossfire 7870s with this card! I also didn't actually know that the logo has a blue LED.. funnily enough my PC has a blue, white and black theme, so that worked out better than expected! :D
It's not about who's using what. It's about making sure that you're getting the maximum performance from all the parts other than the GPU so you're getting accurate representation of what the GPU is capable of.
Glad I bought the reference gt 980 SC. I've always liked how Gtx reference cards have that exhaust blowing hot air out their cards. Good review nontheless.
I love the gigabyte cooling style, they really put some tought in it, and i totally agree that they removed thad piece of plastic with the gigabyte sign on there.
Screw the vids, i'm here for the ending cause i just love the way you end your vids (thumbs up/dn, subscribe, etc) without a hiccup :) ..... just kidding about the first part :D lol
While I'm a bit bummed I bought 780Tis back in June, these cards are amazing. Love the cooler design, LEDs, backplate, and the multiple DisplayPorts are great as well.
It's awesome to see gigabyte getting so close to perfection with their cards, but I do miss the 670 days when they were the same price as the reference cards :(
sat here waiting for ups delivery of my 980. i like the reference design, ive heard it actually helps reduce the heat inside your case by blowing all the air out through the gpu cooler
According to Guru3D tests of this card, Gigabyte's GTX 970 WF, the vrms of that card was really low 50-60s celsius degrees and GPU load temp of 60-65c. Really good card. I've seen Asus's Strix and MSI's Gaming non-reference cooler max at 70-80 c on the vrms.
What I want is a reference design but with the higher quality components as I water cool video cards in my main gaming rigs so the air cooler is pointless to me but having a reference design is optimal for the best selection of water blocks and combine that with the higher quality components from the custom designed SKU's and that would be one kick ass card for water cooling.
Linus, I'd say it all depends on the case you have. In the case of the define nano S, alot of users have found that it's much healthier to have the reference blower style cooler, because its fan sits farther than the power supply shroud, whereas on open air coolers, the card had about 1cm of clearance to breathe or less.
My 780ti is going back to EVGA today because although the DVI ports work fine, the HDMI doesn't. EVGA are crediting me the cost of the card, and since their 980 is just all Displayport and my monitors are HDMI only, I'm picking up one of these bad boys. Flawless F***ing Victory indeed.
Finally, we get to see how the item, subject of the review, looks like installed! However, it would really be great if you add more depth to the review like how noisy the card sounds like.
Linus, you are awesome!! Thank you so much for your informative videos! I love that you explain every minute detail just in case there are new viewers for every video. I find myself learning something new with every new video that you post. Thanks !!!
Love the channel. - has tought me SOOOOO much. One recommendation, could you add a benchmark test for 3D GPU rendering - would be amazing to see how your cards compare in something like Blender's Cycles as this is becoming a very popular use for these cards. Please, please, please.
I love the looks of the Windforce cards. Something about three fans on a huge card just makes it look and feel a little faster even if it isent. But it dose seem to be faster.
Great review Linus! It would be really great if you could review one of the EVGA ACX cards (either 970 or 980). Would be cool to see how their new ACX v2 coolers stack up against their claims. Or even better yet, if you guys could do a shootout of as many non-reference designs as you can get your hands on. Thanks!
These cards are awesome value for money, I just picked up a 970 G1 4GB the other day for a great price to put in my old PC that uses an Asus P6T Deluxe v2, i7-920@3.4ghz OC, 6GB DDR31600@ around 1066 in triple channel mode. It was running a Radeon Sapphire 5870 1GB until I swapped it out. I tried playing the new Battlefront on low settings with the old GFX card and it was struggling to get 30FPS. Now with the new GFX card being the only difference I am getting a solid smooth 80-90FPS on 1080p ultra settings. For anyone who has hung onto their old x58 2009 system as long as I did with a similar mobo and cpu I highly recommend this simply cheap upgrade rather than building a new expensive 2015 i5 or i7 gaming rig. The old i7 CPU's do not bottleneck the newer NVidia 900 range GTX cards, the battlefront minimum recommended settings are way off, don't be fooled into rushing out to buy a new machine.
Guys, just to let you know, nvidia already released new driver to support DSR downscaling for 6xx and 7xx cards. Awaiting amd to return fire with the 390X/3xx, February seems like it'll be the best year for pc gamers yet.
As someone who uses 2x Gigabyte Windforce 780Ti Ghz edition this card makes me drool. And i love the blue light sense i'm running a black and blue build i just wish the gigabyte gaming Mobo came in a blue / black , blue / silver / black version.
I'm so glad that my MSI 780 Ti is basically just as fast as the new 980s. Too bad it dropped 140 euros in price in 2 months, but still, I'm happy with my purchase :)
Really liking this card, just trying to decide if it is worth the upgrade or not from my Evga GTX680 SC. I agree on the light though, I actually think the blue looks nice, but an RGB option to allow colour changes would be very nice!
Since I use open bench for all my systems this card would be awesome for me, but also since I don't really overclock that much the extra power consumption to improve temperatures wouldn't be that much of a change for me. I'd take a non reference cooler over the normal one anytime either way, but that extra power consumption is not that necessary. For me, someone would welcome this for sure.
is the power draw from just the card, or the whole system? because i want to quad-sli these monsters, but i need to be sure my 1300w (80+ gold) psu can handle it at 4k gaming.
I like how nobody seems to care about noise levels anymore... Reference blowers are literally loud hair dryers and run much hotter. Paying for premium aftermarket versions with custom heatsinks, larger silent fans, upgraded power management and significantly less coil whine is always worth it in my opinion.
Look at all those cheap GPU prices for a high end card, those were the days
jesus that corsair logo really does look like a tramp stamp
They seem to only use it in some countries. Others still have the old logo.
Lars Reviews i hope so i really need a new keyboard and ive always wanted a k70 and if its going to look like that yuck
Why they chose that horrible yellow/orange color is beyond comprehension. A complete 180 from the aesthetic of nearly every other product they offer.
Who cares? And it looks fine.
PC gamers are all now lemons it seems.
Obious Alias LOL "lemons" fuckin a. nailed it.
Got one of these for 120$ in 2021 with covid and crypto 🤭 The guy I bought it from sold it to me as a GTX 970 G1 🤝 Big win on my end 🎊

I was more interested in the Little Bits than the card... It looks cool.
Didn't I argue with you once? :P
Oh yeah!
LOL! Now that I look like it like that, it's way more funny! HAHA! That's totally the internet!
Looks great. :) Love the design and the triple fans. Weee~

I would like to compare different 980s based on noise and temps at a given clock speed. It'd help benchmark a company's cooling solutions.
Thanks for including a synthetic benchmark. It was nicely to directly compare my current setup.

who the fuck gives a shit about power consumption? like if you can afford being a part of the PC master race you better be damned sure you can pay the power bills too..... if you're worried about stuff like that don't buy a gaming PC.
more power consumption=more heat=less lifespan.
tplinkeri true that, but does that really matter? we change out the parts before the ''shorter lifespan'' comes into effect anyways don't we?
MrSprett6 idk.
he have a point and about heat the 4 degrees improvment between the 980 and 780 ti reference isn't that big of a deal
younes aran he was talking about reference vs non-reference.
Can't think of anything to comment so I'm just going to post a pancake recipe.
1 1/2 cups milk
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups White Wings self-raising flour
1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/3 cup caster sugar
25g butter, melted
Whisk milk, egg and vanilla together in a jug. Sift flour and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Stir in sugar. Make a well in centre. Add milk mixture. Whisk until just combined.
Step 2
Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Serve.

Lol WUT????? ^^^^^
Who TF would call the 980 garbage??
radriargaming23 it's as good as a $250 gtx 1060 now, so yeah it might have been good in the past but not anymore.
Well fun fact, for people(like me) who don't have access to newest and best budget cards the 980 for 380$ is the best card I can get right now

Damn, this is my favourite sponsor so far. Those kits are so sweet
Who cares about how much power it consumes or how loud is it?
I do.
Everyone who pays his/her own bill :D and choosing a power supply is another story ;)

M.Lewis Did i say its for gaming? :D
The 980 is unstoppable. 50 fps with Metro: Last Light maxed out. That used to be impossible with a single card...
I'm referring to it maxed with 4 x SSAA and Physx. Getting 50 fps on that was impossible with stock specs on a single card until now.
Bought one of these, exactly this model (used) in 2021, nice deal, still great performance.

Littlebits sounds awesome too. Definitively will be checking them out!
Wayyy to expensive even with the $20 off.
Congrats with one million subs!
Bought this card in 2017 for 200€, it still rocks :)
Got my Gigabyte GTX 970 yesterday. Its awesome
Function over form is my motto for a Gaming PC
Littlebits actually look quite cool. Reminds me of some of the stuff I used to play with.
You uploaded this on my birthday.
you are the best linus !!!
keep going !!!
Guys, just to let you know, nvidia already released new driver to support DSR downscaling for 6xx and 7xx cards.
Awaiting amd to return fire with the 390X/3xx, February seems like it'll be the best year for pc gamers yet.
I don't know why but I love it when he uses curse words. Even when they're censored.
As someone who uses 2x Gigabyte Windforce 780Ti Ghz edition this card makes me drool.
And i love the blue light sense i'm running a black and blue build i just wish the gigabyte gaming Mobo came in a blue / black , blue / silver / black version.
Loving the star citizen posters in the back. =]
OK, you got my attention with the Little Bits
This is what im buying over the summer.
I agree on the light though, I actually think the blue looks nice, but an RGB option to allow colour changes would be very nice!
linus is going to become a rapper at this rate.
I had it!!!
Great perform, less power consumption, nice service/warranty.
The bad is $370 too fucking expensive for me. Overall it's great stuff.
I personally like the blue gigabyte logo on the top. My builds going to be black and white with blue LEDs so the gpu will match perfectly
I'm gonna wait for the Asus and MSI design, because their 970 non reference cards looks really cool!
Please review Gigabytes 970 vs other 970s.
I'm currently looking for an upgrade and would like to know which is the best offer for me.
I like the idea (talking about little bits).
With this card, I don't like the fact that you can see the silver heat sink fins. Also I agree with Linus about the LED light.
choc appreciation for littleBits
Still rocking this card in 2022 :)
2023 too br :3
The thing I'm looking forward to most with the 1080 GTX isn't the power boost (though I still really am) but the 1.3 DisplayPort! Woot! ^_^
I like how nobody seems to care about noise levels anymore...
Reference blowers are literally loud hair dryers and run much hotter. Paying for premium aftermarket versions with custom heatsinks, larger silent fans, upgraded power management and significantly less coil whine is always worth it in my opinion.
Watching this at my iphone 6 plus. Its the best.
I'm a huge fan of the blower design but I really wished there was more innovation behind it(HIS
this card looks amazing, omega good job *thumbs up*
That LittleBits thing seems nice!
my Gigabyte GTX 460 SOC advertised GPU gauntlet so it must have made a comeback.
