A defense attorney is there to guide the defendant to the process, because the process is sophisticated and complex and adversary so it is way to easy to convict somebody innocent without an attorney. The defense attorney is needed to sentence somebody, else one could say he was innocent but just wasn't able to defend oneself properly. Because of that a defense attorney who does his job badly is a terrible thing, becaude you leave room for speculation. Therefore one could say a defense attorney helps to get you convicted, by robbs you of any excuses because he tries to come up with all excuses.

It might be that she holds some compassion on her heart as she said about rehab etc. So her starting point is trying to fix those who are gone to the bad side. In this case, she tried everything and got no emotional, human response from this man thus seeing he has gone beyond salvation. That might be one of the reasons for her to almost cry. It must be very upsetting when you try to find even a spark of light from somebody but it is darkness there only.

Defence lawyers don’t always believe their client is innocent. Nor do they usually want to see their client get an acquittal. Their job is really to make sure the state dots their I’s and crosses their T’s to make certain that the defendant truly deserves to go to jail.
They’re also to make certain the innocent don’t do time for a crime they never committed. Detectives and prosecutors do occasionally get it wrong sometimes.

It's not the client that's important but the law. We all deserve to have the law fairly applied and followed. These laws should be treated as almost sacred. They give us our rights ! Not perfect but the best we have ever had , so far in history. We call always ammend these laws , add new ones , etc.
