My wife and I just got a puppy and he’s 3 weeks old, but the mother died during birthing her pups so this video should help a lot thanks!!
I had to assist mom with a huge litter, and three weeks was close to the time we started solid food. I weighed frequently. Prior to gruel, I gave bottles of warm Esbilac to the smaller ones. Before weaning, I gave them all a dose of Doc Roy's probiotics, and also used it if anyone had first sign of diarrhea. I made a gruel of goat's milk, baby cereal, and blundered puppy kibble (Purina One Puppy Formula.) By five weeks, they got a home cooked meal of ground beef, turkey or chicken with goat's milk, bits of bread or baby cereal, and added three scoops of Doc Roy's Forti-cal. They got puppy kibble mush for subsequent meals, which I slowly transitioned to dry Kibble. By 8 weeks, my pups were 18 to 23 lbs - gorgeous!

When is the best time to complete weaning from mum? 6 or 7 weeks?
Weaning usually starts around 4-5 weeks of age when puppies start getting their teeth. I would recommend to take your que from mom when she starts to walk away from them or brushes them away. How long for weaning depends on the puppy. Some may need to transition longer than others to normal food. Sheryl at Revival.
Great video! Thank you! I got my Shi Tzu puppy 3 days ago when he was 7 weeks old. For 2.5 days he refused eating any solid food, or canned food. I suspected that he was steel weaning when I got him. So I went and got a milk replacement and he finally eats something (from a bottle) ! But I think it’s time to eat other foods and not only the milk, cause I think it’s really not enough... what do you recommend? I got a CCL Recovery liquid, should I mix it with some food? Or just feed from a bottle or something? Thank you🙏🏼

Do I have 2 chihuahua pups. I started weaning they eat ok off my finger but not so much the bowl yet. They are now 30 days old is this still early as this video says small dogs 5 weeks to wean? Good afternoon Philip, Puppies are weaned any time from about 4-6 weeks of age. The longer they're on mom the better for them. When puppies start to wean, we start them out on a gruel made up of a milk replacer, Baby food rice cereal, or the Royal Canin puppy Mouuse, really thin in a small bowl or a saucer. They should be feed 3-4 times a day. They may also nurse on mom periodically the 1st week. We also give babies a probiotic to help with digestion and to ward off diarrhea. My dog has eclampsia so she can’t nurse her puppies anymore, I had to suddenly change the puppies diet (they’re three weeks old) with puppy food mixed with puppy milk replacer but they don’t seem to be gaining weight, any advice anyone? Edit: also they don’t seem to like eating they’re new food

I have German Shepard pups but there is one that eats then vomits , but then eat his indigested pup food then after he is playful drinks water ok with no problem when his mom feeds them she does not vomit

I have used 3 vets in the area, and they all have been NO HELP at all with advice on worming or weaning puppies. Only one offered to do health certificates for $400-600, no worm meds though. So don’t think “talk to your vet” is always such good advice

Pups usually begin to wean when the dam has had enough of feeding them! This usually happens as their teeth and claws begin to develop and make nursing potentially painful or irritating for the dam. Up until this point, the dam will usually make herself constantly available for nursing, and it is important to keep an eye out for the signs that your dam is trying to discourage the pups from nursing in order to take advantage of this chance to begin tempting them with other food. I've been handrearing puppies for 4 weeks, but just in the last 24 hours one has developed a rash which worsens when she's fed. The milk formula is the same. Can she suddenly develop an allergy to the formula?

I heard that once you start weaning, you cant let the pups back on mom or it can cause issues with her health, but I haven't found any evidence of this. Is this true??
Good afternoon, When puppies first start to wean, they may eat gruel and also nurse on mom once in a while. You may also have a one that is smaller than the others that may need to nurse longer. Once they start getting their teeth and claws, mom's will usually start to avoid nursing the puppies. It isn't good to keep puppies nursing on mom after they're fully weaned because her milk won't dry up and then it may cause her to get mastitis. Sheryl at Revival.

Good morning Ramon, When the puppies start getting teeth and claws, the dam will start making herself less accessible. The process of weaning the pups onto solid food and the drying up of the milk is one that happens gradually over the course of a couple of weeks, rather than being something that happens overnight. The process of the milk drying up is one that happens in stages, as demand drops off, food is reduced, and the dam becomes less and less willing to nurse.
