Hi Mr Novak, I make my living as a blacksmith/fabricator/metalsmith. I make extremely custom architectural/functional/decorative art pieces for clients who care more for results than pricing. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the videos about your work, but just as importantly about dealing with all of the ancillary aspects of being a craftsman, managing clients expectations, dealing with constant interruptions, the the backlog of work that feels like every time one comes off the board two get added, and of course all of the clients who run out of patience two weeks into a project that you explicitly told them you would not be able to get to for six months. I was lucky enough as a child to spend quite a few days in the shop of a long rifle maker, Robert Watts in Stone Mountain GA, it was a wonderland for a 10 year old boy and gave me an eternal appreciation for the multiplicity of skills a gunsmith must possess, and really laid the foundation of my career path. Thank you so much for the effort and time you put into your craft, and the videos that give us the slightest peek under the skirts.

Nothing better than a Friday evening new anvil drop
Most people don't realize and understand how much time is involved with repairing all the screws in a firearm. I recently worked on a WW1 German calvary Mauser. The trigger guard/magazine screws were stamped with the last two digits of the rifles serial number. Repairing those, without damaging the stampings, was a pain in the butt.

FYI I own one of these and I've been told by several Sharps experts that you should half cock the trigger before ejecting the brass to allow the firing pin to float back and not get swiped across the primer possibly damaging it. Actually looks like Bruno's got it figured out.

I have learned so much from you Mark and you have saved me from causing more harm them good. Your videos should be required material for anyone who wants to be an amateur or professional gunsmith.
I would move across the world if this dude would teach me. I can take anything apart and put it back together and once I figure out how it operates I can figure out what’s wrong with it and how to fix. But nothing beats being taught the stuff that took years of doing it to learn.
I like the optimism of Bruno making the numbers 4 digits, telling us that there are lots more episodes to come.

I live 20 miles up the road from Mark in Summerville, SC. I remember going to an Antique Store in the backyard of an old house here in the 1980's. I parked, and while going past the owner's garage, the guy stuck his head out and asked if I wanted to see something cool?
Apparently some workmen were doing renovations in downtown Charleston, and had cut into the wall of a historic house. Behind the plaster were a Sharp's Carbine and an older French made rifle. Both were wrapped in old cloth and apparently had been walled in to prevent discovery from Union soldiers and later forgotten. I remember that the French rifle had three notches cut in the stock, (number of people killed?). The Sharps had to have come from a Union soldier probably killed.
The workmen took the guns and sold them to the antique dealer in Summerville. He was very busy with a wire wheel brush on the grinder removing rust and the rest of the value of the guns when I got there. I didn't know much then, but I told him that I didn't think the wire brush was the way to go, before letting a proper gunsmith look them over.
Damn as a video editor by schooling, I just want to bring to the attention of everyone the absolutely ace camera tilt at 33:11! Props to the camera man (not sure if its Bruno or not)

That is a great system for parts I used it to put together a John Deere engine, till you run out of parts and bolts thanks for letting me learn something new stay safe Master Gun smith
Better than 95% of TV broadcast ANYWHERE. So much skill, so much experience. It's a true pleasure to watch Mr Novak practice his "art".
There is just something pleasing about watching a master at his craft. I will likely never work on a Sharps rifle, much less handle one. But I enjoy learning all the same.

I have done 5 basket case motorcycles. Bought 4 rd350 frames with 5 motors, all took apart and in boxes.
Sharps were made in Hartford, Ct. The factory stood until 1966, when it was demolished to make way for I-84.

that was so much fun I think I will go out to my range behind the house and shoot my paper cartridge percussion Sharps.
I have a 50 Cal flintlock that is grooved for round balls and loves 85 Grains of FFF that gives excellent accuracy for 100 yard shooting, even though I've harvested 8 deer with this smoke pole all being within 25 yards. Yea I'm a bow hunter at heart. It will set the woods on fire so I bought one of those CO2 devices you stick in the touch hole and apply CO2 to empty the barrel and such. It beats the old time ball puller and scraper to hell and back. Yes some think it's cheating, but I think it makes a flintlock much safer to mess with. Hunt in the rain enough and find out for yourself the fun of removing a barrel of wet powder and ball. A Sharps .50-70 ended all that nonsense, I'll have to see if my wife "Mommy Dearest" will let me buy one. Great Video !!!!!

38-55, 11X57,50-70,45-70 I shoot all of them with Black and Cast.I do have a Snider also. FUN!!
I can throw a couple of Center fire conversion Vetterli's also.Making old guns talk again .

Mark, you kind of remind me of my granddad's uncles. They had a pretty sweet shop and made some crazy things. They would ask their customers if someone else could make the parts. They typically only took a job if no one else was able to do it.
I'm becoming a gunsmith of last resort, and cherry-picking what I need to do, because no-one else CAN

Great “SCHTOOFF” Mark! You’re more interesting than a “no yoke egg”!! The part I love most about these Sharps guns is their fantastically “MASCULINE HAMMERS”!!! Like the body of a “bodybuilder” (think Ronnie Coleman!)! The Spencer’s hammers were like that too! Your closing “still shots” with your mouth WIDE OPEN would put a giant “Large Mouth Bass” to shame!!! WOWSER, what a “GAPE”! “Gesundheit”!

I figured out repairing screw heads myself many years ago, a points file often is helpful.

I use the taping the top of a screw tip as often as I can. And I'm not a gun smith. Thanks, Mark.
Shilo sharps in big timber Montana has many parts available for this gun. The factory will even fit a breech block for you . Wow what an awesome project . I would have re barreled for 50 21/2 sharps . 30 inch long , extra heavy , 12LB barrel , with 1 and 26 inch twist . But that is what I would do. And I am sure a half dozen of my friends would piss and moan about the fast twist or this or that
