hey , i was a wee lad back in 1973 (5) My father would have Led Zeppelin on and my mom would read us the Hobbit and More as bed time stories. heh, she had such a wonderful way of story telling. Even so, she would slowly calm us down after just 10-15 pages.....the next night I would ask to go back a few pages so I didn't miss a thing.
I believe it took over a year for the Hobbit.

Ramble On is a perfect example of Led Zeppelin's awesome musicianship and brilliant arrangements. Its beauty is in the detail. You can listen to it over and over again and hear something new. The unknown instrument is a guitar through an electronic device. The books The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit became very popular among hippies in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Robert Plant was very much a hippy. He was into English, Celtic and Norse mythology generally. Lord the Rings was a "modern", 20th century, book written in the style of ancient myths. Ramble On is sung like a blues song, blues being another Plant's passions. In my opinion Plant was the greatest singer of his generation and Ramble On shows why. Jimmy Page shines too. So many of the great guitarists overpowered songs with their technical brilliance. No Page. He put the song first. Ramble On is Page at his most restrained best

I love the sound of the acoustic guitar at the beginning of this song and John Paul Jones plays a fantastic bass line throughout. Jimmy Page plays both the acoustic and electric guitars and the song goes between being soft and loud. Yes, I read that the lyrics have something to do with Lord of the Rings but not quite sure of the full significance. However, Robert Plant's vocals and Bonzo's drumming, well, it's Led Zeppelin at their best, as usual. They never disappoint and they are not just a heavy rock band as you say, they were always experimenting and you can tell that from their varied catalogue of songs. Fab reaction, guys, as usual, very interesting, many thanks. I'm so glad this song got unblocked as I really like it!

Ramble On is also one of my many favorites by Led Zeppelin. I actually learned what I think of as like a new level of understanding music from your reaction to Dazed & Confused. Like I never thought that the title might describe how the song's structure or journey or destination makes the listener or dancer or musician feel. I just always kept my verbal communications in my thinking & understanding powers and stumble around blindly ignorant of most other sensory information. What's embarrassing is the obvious fact that even with such a narrow focus on verbal communications, free of any serious competition for my attention, I remain at base camp.
Wow, anyway, I hope my tablet, or chromecast, or WiFi shuts me down before I'm able to hit send....like it almost always does because I take like a half hour or more to type anything. But if not, I wanted to thank you for boosting me up just enough to be in position to get blinded by the disco light. Those chairs look comfortable too. I wonder what's on the wall or the ceiling above the camera that you guys can see when you're strapped-in, taking your wild rides?

Led Zeppelin never made a bad song. Both Led Zeppelin and Rush are maybe the only bands that I listen to on a regular basis that can take you to another world. The instrumentation is pretty much flawless. You are spot on about how so many bands are influenced by books, like Lord of the Rings for this song. If you research enough, there's probably as many bands influenced by literature as there are authors.

Please remain in Led Zeppelin's Fantasy World a little longer! Which is of course the world of JRR Tolkien. They did many songs that either explicitly included Lord of the Rings themes like this song, or implied similar themes. Rush also did a few implied references in their early days as well. By-Tor and the Snow Dog, The Necromancer.
No Quarter would be a great reaction. Led Zeppelin's Battle of Evermore is perhaps the most magical fantasy song of all time.

References to Mordor, Gollum the Evil One... all references to J.R.R Tolkien Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. :-)

1969. Were the producers just better in the 60's and 70's? Thinking about this for awhile, it's the only explanation I can come up with. Page produced all 10 of their studio albums himself. It was just a different time.

They actually cared about the quality of their work. Despite spending a lot of time doing their "rock star" thing. It's what they lived and breathed for. Perfection. The four men were each musical geniuses in their own right. And magic all together. Like so many others from that era. The more new technology increased and made things "easier" and quicker, the more QUANTITY they can put out. Anybody could do what some of these "talents" do with machines that rework the quality of the vocals and everything else. Are real instruments even used anymore? Lol. They want instant gratification today without putting the heart into their music. Anyway just my opinion. ✌️❤️😊🎶

Back then,,,,talent outweighed the record company more than it has since the '80's. A&R man works for the record label. 😓😓😓👎
