I was using (with proper precautions, for 2 years) LM on my GTX 1070, the temperature difference versus good thermal paste (Gelid GC-Extreme) was only about 2-3 C, so I totally agree with you.
5:22 That "extra layer" is the heatsink. So, I totally disagree. Used properly, liquid metal is far superior and I will use it in a heartbeat over your regular thermal paste.
I used LM on a direct die i7 7800X and it made a huge difference between 20-30C agains best regular thermal paste TG Kryonaut - i checked the mount twice and it looked to be perfect so i didn't understand those temperatures that were in line to stock non delided 7800X, imprint on water block looked perfect. So then i put the LM and bam huge temperature improvement - i could run the CPU 300MHz higher with higher Vcore with the same temperature as i could with stock or dd with paste. Block was Heatkiller IV and der8auers direct die frame for socket 2066.

Why use it in the first place. Wonder if they can find a way to make liquid metal mixed with thermal paste
That already exists. It's more of a "worst of both worlds" scenario though. Very uncommonly used.

I have gtx1070 liquid metal, uts been two years its running well never had to hnage the LM its been reliable as as i know..
