I had to laugh at myself because at my farm I was taking care of my horses in the same cloths you described (wool base, fleece lined jeans down vest, down jacket, insulated bibs, etc) when it was 10-degrees ABOVE zero. You were at 50-debrees BELOW zero. I am officially a wimp. And you are my hero.

Sure brought back memories of having horses and surviving cold snaps in Winter. I'm from Central Canada, Ontario to be exact. I had one Quarter horse mare for 21 years and raised 2 colts off of her when she was under 10. I bordered my horses at other folks stables, so the amount of work required of me to do was minimal. I did participate in weekly box stall cleaning which helped with financial output. When boarding horses with a friend I did take over the work when she went on winter vacation. I simply moved into her home and went to my office from there daily after barn chores. I gave up my horses at age 45 when my body was riddled with arthritis and I was no longer able to get myself into the saddle. I'm 75 now & all I have are my memories and a Clever Cowgirl. Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos.

Great Job! I had no doubts you and the Horses would survive the brutal temps. So sorry about your back, you've mentioned in previous videos of your bad back and even showed when you put on a support for your back when taking all those bales off the horse trailer. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger! I've had a bad back ever since growing up on a farm, toting those hay bales, so it doesn't take much, just a sudden movement to create a flare up. Sending prayers, hugs and love for total recovery! Recently, I had a lumbar steroid injection, which did NOTHING for me.
You are so right, there is never a VACATION for us on the farm with animals to care for, that's what gives us purpose and a reason to get out of bed each morning! You're still a young lady and an inspiration to us all!!!!

Our little cold snap, here in Colorado, was 20 below for one night with single digits in the day. Even with heavy gloves and “HotHands” inside them, I have several spots of frostbite on my fingers. Now that I’m 75 I have a terrible time with my hands in the cold weather, so I was glad to hear that it’s not an issue for you. It never fails that an injury or illness occurs in the worst weather when the horses require maximum attention. One has to keep going to keep up with the work. It’s a good thing that you have plenty of hay - one less item to worry about.

Hey Cowgirl, you may want to give an incline table a try. (Teeter) I lived with back pain for 8 yrs, went through pills, chiropractors and shots. When they started telling me I needed to get surgery to take a disc out I looked for an alternative and ended up getting a used Teeter incline table off graigslist, best thing I could have done. I used it 4 or 5 times a day for a couple of weeks and the pain was gone. I did construction my whole life and ended up with a herniated disc and had times when I literally had to crawl to go to the bathroom. The thing was truly a life saver for me. Hope you're feeling better.

Back pain - ugh, with a degenerated disk at L4-L5 and chronic thoracic strain, I know back pain a little too well. Classic issue for those of us who chose careers as fire service medics, but common among everyone who lifts for a living. That said, I honestly think having the responsibility to get moving to care for horses and handle all the other chores is an overall benefit as long as we self regulate and discover what works best for us.
For frozen hands: I finally got battery heated glove liners! Many years ago, I had a thumb injury that compromised circulation in my left thumb. I skipped the heated liners the other morning because I was only going to be out in -20F for a short time, but a few minutes was all it took to make that thumb painful and useless despite having a fairly decent pair of gloves on. It was a trick to find XXL gloves actually big enough to go over the heated liners since things like throwing firewood around would destroy them in short order, but I absolutely love them. They are a game changer for me since the agony while waiting for warm water to thaw that thumb is one of my least favorite things.
I'm jealous of horses' ability to handle weather. They graze under the hot sun on days I feel like I'd die without A/C, and would rather let snow pile up on their backs than use a run in or a barn that I worked hard to make available. My oldest 2 will be 26 in May and still prefer a little horse play and a roll in the snow over taking cover. Mind blowing. Why are we so fragile by comparison?!

Pointers I learned from living in Fairbanks AK. At -20 F was a breaking point for changing from my winter clothing into my deep winter clothing. There was little wind up there in deep winter. 1. Wear only natural fibers: wool, silk, cotton, no acrylic!; i wore panty horse as my first layer, then socks, then heavy duty boots; i made a calf length parka coat out of deep freeze sleeping bag fabric i bought at the fabric store. I used a wolf pelt to add the ruff and other trim. At 10 degrees F above zero, that coat was too hot, I sweated in it. Two layers of hand coverings. If I dudn;t have the first, thin , glove layer on before I left the housenit took forever before my fingers warmed up. I put on the second mittens in the car. At -20 the car was plugged in all nite in a covered shed. I left the key electric taped into the truck all winter. Thenelectric tape provided a buffer to stop freezer burn. I didn’t bother locking the truck and generally left it running while I went grocery shopping. I knitted a hat for myself out of cowachin yarn that I brushed up with a carting brush. It was wonderful and I gifted many. I love cold weather, the crunch of snow and the glisten of moonlight on the snow. fBKs is only 100 mikes south of the Artic circle, so it almost has one day with absolutely no sunshine. Snow doesn’t melt up there for months. The snow that falls at the end of Sept melts in April with all the other collected snow. I know your horses can survive, but I didn’t realize they’d steam. You’re a wonderful herd mom, so your guys will have the best of care. Does their water freeze in their stalls? Thanks for making a channel……….i now live in MaryLand.

    Hello,
I have lived with horses for all but two of my 76 years, and appreciate what you are attempting. We do get cold in Ohio, but not in those numbers. Please allow me to ask a few questions, and offer some suggestions, if I might.
I was pleased to hear your statement about hay, and the hind gut. Can all, most, or some of these horses be run together? We always have the herd boss, which tend to level out over time. If they can be grouped, you will save a lot of work, and feed loss. I started to feed nothing but 4x5 round bales in a feeder that I built to provide 24 hr. access to food. These are loaded on their sides with either a tractor if you have room, or a skid steer About three years ago my son helped me install a “Drinking Post” non electric water hydrant. It has been a good product. Keeping your shelter(s) facing the east, so that they can soak up as much early solar heat.
Carry on, and pray for an early spring.

I wish they could all go out together! I have a few that were stallions until much later in life and they are harder in integrate into a herd. I used round bales for a few winters but the quality was not up to snuff!

I have been thinking about you and the horsies and tiny since your last video when you prepared for the cold! I can not even imagine -50😭 I’ve found your channel a week back and binge watched a lot of your videos, and I’m so glad I’ve found you as you seem to care about your animals deeply and you are really an expert/professional but with kindness and being down to earth. it is just refreshing to see :)) I hope your back feels better soon🥺 I am sad I am on the other side of the globe, I’d gladly go over and help take care of the horses for you! I hope this cold will be over soon (and maybe next year will be better). Hi from Hungary❤

Your dedication to keeping everyone safe and healthy is beautiful …I am so sorry you suffered the injury…what might seem as relentless chores and extremely hard work to many, is something that those of us who do- or have done this labor of love and commitment understand that this keeps us THRIVING. As a person prone to depression the fact that those animals I care for NEED ME keeps me getting out of bed and busy until it’s the appropriate time to retire to my bed. They’ve kept me going. I pray your back, and arm are easing up on you and you don’t suffer a relapse. Show yourself some love and your body kindness when possible ♥♥♥

That is stunningly beautiful there! Our cold temp where I am in AK are usually dry so it allows me to keep the horses without blankets for much lower temps than others in the lower elevations where its a more wet cold. It is really cool seeing different areas in the US that battles the same cold temps. Thank you for the update, I was curious how they faired.
