To me what made things worse was the voice actress. She pretty much caused the fire to spread. Also she didn't try to tell us any information what the show would be like.

Earthquake town, baby vagina, and the voice actor were the real issues. The creator likely didn’t have a ton of control over those things as creators usually don’t. And of course had no control over a rogue voice actor. The nachos were never an issue that was just people being dumb.
I think "Earthquake Town" is something that just... how did that make it through? Is it that nobody thought that such a region-specific "joke" (if it could even be called that) wouldn't be misunderstood? For a good chunk of Mexico, "Earthquake Town" would be the equivalent of naming a city "Katrina, LA" for New Orleans residents.
You know I remember some people complaining that the Mc isn’t doing anything to accomplish her dreams like researching plane, tickets for traveling and stuff and I remember thinking “she’s like 9 and she doesn’t even know what kind of dreams she want to accomplish what do you expect?”
And that's not to say 9 year Olds can't have dreams or goals but rather she doesnt need to follow the exact method and path an older audience member would.
Sadly no matter how good or bad this show is, you really cannot get past the blatant racism and xenophobia from some of the people working on this, I mean, remember when that voice actress proudly declared on Instagram that Spanish isn’t a real language?? Yes. I think the people saying "It shouldn't have gotten hate before it premiered" are missing the point, because the discussion is not about the actual quality of the show, that is irrelevant, the discussion is about the blatant racism surrounding the show. Even if the show turned out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, this would not make the stereotypes and behind the scenes racism surrounding the show any less bad. The quality of the show isn't really relevant to the discussion, because the reason people are getting made at the show is not about that.
There was no racism or xenophobia from any crew member. Yes, I will admit what the VA said about the Spanish language was tone deaf but she was getting harassed and threatened over the show's intro and her response was spontaneous. As a latino myself I find the reaction to her response a bit too much because she didn't even say all that. If anything I agree with her in a way cus if you speak Spanish yourself you see latinos using incorrect grammar and punctuation literally all the time, a lot don't even know how to even properly type words in Spanish yet everyone was getting mad over something as trivial as 'oye primos'

Sure, not everyone falls under that umbrella - not all nerds wear glasses and not all geeks are into collecting toys, for example - but we should acknowledge that there are people who do happen live lives exactly like the proported stereotypes.
I'm glad to hear that this is actually a nice show, and I do like that Tater is more of an introvert that wants to be left alone but doesn't let that override her compassion for her family. I can relate to that since I struggle with the latter. Hopefully people are willing to give it a chance and look past the voice actress running her mouth.

That's pretty much the youngest child from one of my uncles. He can't speak Spanish and it's funny he speaks English to our Spanish speaking cousins while we play video games.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the main problem with this show's initial presentation was the fact that it was touted as representation for and marketed towards a general Latino audience instead of its Actual Target Audience of specific USAmerican Latinos. If Disney hadn't fallen in the increasingly common and frustrating pitfall of conflating Latinos from Latin America with Latinos from the US despite their vastly different experiences (which makes them pretty much completely separate from one another), none of this would've happened to begin with... Or if Kleine had made the distinction before the lead VA ran her mouth. Either way, I'm glad the show is decent despite its rough start and I hope this doesn't discourage future creators from telling their stories.

It is just flat-out wild how much of the TV landscape of the late-2010s has been snapped away in just the last year alone. And as all of these shows are disappearing, all we have left is a bunch of shows, least of all Primos, that will not, and will never, have the same impact on us as an Internet. And FOP A New Wish. I don’t speak very good Spanish, my parents did but spoke English at home, and yeah half the time I have no idea what’s even being said but that doesn’t make me any less Hispanic. Latin American and Hispanic cultures have thier odd nicknames. For example, my parents used to call me 'Cangregito' (little crab), and my sister 'Pulpito' (little octopus), and there wasn't much reason to it. And in a more ironic sense, I would be called 'flaca' (skinny girl) somtimes, even if I am overweight, and they would call my sister 'gordita' (little fat girl) when she is skinny. Somtimes it is more litteral and they call my sister 'flaca' instead. These are all terms of endearment, so calling a boy named Ignacio, 'Nacho' isn't out of left feild. Also, we litterally have people in the past, named Richard, Bob, or whatever, commonly nicknamed d*ck, so...
I honestly feel bad for Natasha Kline. After watching the first two episodes of the show it really seems like she just wanted to make a cartoon about her childhood. Yeah, it had harmful stereotypes, but most of them were fixed and they weren't put in there for ill intent. It's Tater's VA that completely destroyed the reputation of the show.
it was the VA running her mouth that really put the final nail in the coffin for me, kind of turned me away from showing interest in it upon all the other issues it already had. I did check out the first episode but I didn't finish it. It kind of felt like an "everything wrong with modern cartoons" show, a lot of constant noise and movement to keep kids distracted

People need to realize that Latinos aren't a single cultural group. They speak completely different languages, and come from completely different ethnic backgrounds. Only in the US are they considered one group. But in Latin America, two people from the same country can completely hate each other for racial or cultural reasons.
Yeah, I agree with that, it kind of reminds me how last year some people said Latinos should go see Blue Beetle to support Latino representation in Hollywood movies, but the movie was a box-office bomb in the U.S. and also in various Latin American countries, the movie itself wasn't bad but it reflected a very U.S. centric view of Latino culture, mostly about Mexican immigrants, though the soundtrack did include songs from artists from different LatAm countries I know that Primos is mostly based around the show's creator childhood experiences and that's great and it's cool that chicano children in the U.S. can have a show they could relate to, but most of the backlash against the show and especially the VAs response came from people from Latin America that are tired of seeing the same clichés, stereotypes and how Latin American culture in U.S. productions are mostly based on Mexican culture.

My issue with the broken spanish is that doesn't sound like real broken spanish, there are no details like little pauses betwin words when you are trying to translate in your head what you whant to say, or bad use of gendered words.
Or a person correcting you on grammar. There is always an adult or a smart kid that corrects your usage of words. The older teen cousins could be that character. Or even the grandma. If she knew more English they could help the MC speak better while understanding that they don't always know what people are saying in Spanish. Sometimes a lot of children will tell another closer relative what did they say so they can better understand. Especially when you know they are talking about you.

In a way I am in the same boat of the creator of the show which is why I don't care about the main character having broken language. I am unable to speak Italian since some of my dad's family is Italian and also Romani among Dutch and Russian. The names of the setting and characters was a big yikes. However, what drove it in the coffin for me was the VA.
Mexican Guy who grew up near LA. It's ok for Kids. It was never meant for anybody above the age of 8. I actually found it entertaining,I thought I wasn't gonna like it but a sense of familiarity came from watching it.
I have a very similar background to the characters in this show so I probably would have enjoyed it if it was out when I was a kid. Not everyone’s Latino experience is the same but I think this show really does portray an authentic experience for many people in this country.
I hate having to defend this show, but I grew up in California, I can really relate to the intro. The city’s name never ed bothered me because that was just Californian humor. We have a stadium called the Epicenter. It was embarrassing so so so many Latinos react to the show this way, the creator was straight that the show was a Chicano representation.
Yeah. Not sure why people got all up in arms over the broken Spanish thing, either. Like, the creator said that the show revolves around her experience. Many of my classmates growing up were the children or grandchildren of immigrants, and so they ended up using "Tejano" terminology instead of proper Spanish. Like saying "carro" instead of "el coche". In my community, it was never made into a big deal. When you're the child of an immigrant, of course you're going to have trouble speaking proper Spanish in a country full of English speakers. That was one of the creator's specific struggles growing up. It's not like she tried to claim that she was right in using improper Spanish grammar.
@@MrSophireKlein might have been pretty clear on her goals, but the marketing sure wasn’t. Iirc, they initially marketed as Latino representation rather than specifically chicano representation. The concerns over the name Cuquita were pretty valid tho, as the show would inevitably air in Latam, and in some countries cuca means vagina. Also, things only started to really get heated after Tater’s VA opened her mouth and started spewing inflammatory messages instead of explaining that since Tater is a third generation immigrant, her Spanish is rusty and that part of the show would be dedicated to her reconnecting with her language and culture. She could’ve just said that to quell the concerns of the community, but instead she hypocritically called Spanish a colonizer language while speaking English and called people grammar Nazis for expressing concern over the fact the intro is conjugated incorrectly. Earthquakes are a sensitive topic in most of Latin America, specially Mexico, Chile and California, but people do joke about it, I think people did overreact a bit at the terremoto heights thing, even if it was a tad tasteless for a kids show either way. It would be like calling a town for a children’s show set in Arkansas “Tornadoville” or a town set in Florida “Hurricane Beach”. Like, yeah, it’s funny, dark humor and all that, but it does feel out of place in children’s TV.

I feel bad for the lady that made this show. I don’t think she intended to make a show that offended people all she did was make something based on her own life experiences. I think the controversy probably would’ve died down or been forgotten if either she and her crew ignored the controversy or if she had just made a statement saying the show was based on her own experience and that obviously her experience isn’t a reflection of every Hispanic person’s life experience. But that video the voice actress made where she sounds really snarky soured a bunch of people’s opinions on the show before it even came out so some people probably won’t give it a chance because of that.
That the thing, this show is not a good representation of Latam. It is for those latinos that are way more american and don't speak Spanish at all and only have stereotypical aspect of latam. The difference between a Latino living in latam vs on born in USA is just too big

I think what needs to be remembered regarding this show is that the characters aren't Mexican or from any other LatAm country, they are Chicano. Much of the critiques regarding authenticity ignore this fact, often willingly because of how Chicanos are viewed as 'diet' or even 'lesser' Hispanics.
The main problem was it was presented as a celebration of latinos when in reality it was more of a chicano/latino descendant gringo audience, and it actually is not bad at all but as a latino myself I can say that most latinos are very intolerant when it comes to gringos touching anything latino related, especially in this day and age where most latino audience are still conservative and very close minded and believe in the go woke go broke discourse. Aside from that, the real controversy for me was how tone deaf and offensive the VA was saying horrible things about colonization and the spanish language.
I'm Mexican-American my parents are from México but my sister and I were born in the States she speaks Spanish I don't my parents weren't the ones who taught me how to speak they spoke mainly spanish around the house and the people around me were mainly my family. I had to go to a speech therapist and the lady taught me English🤷🏻♀️ i was a muted child.
My mom had to pick one language because I was having trouble learning to speak. My mom said since I was in the US I should speak English. I got a lot of bs for that. Mexicans who live here for years who couldn’t speak English would give big ol’ speeches on how I need to learn Spanish and that Spanish was more important for me to know then English, you know in a country that speaks mostly English. I grow to hate the language. I know it’s dumb but when I hear someone only speaking Spanish and teaching their kids Spanish first really angers me. I am trying to get over it but it’s so hard.
the thing is the VA later had a role in Hailey's On It that made her go find out more about both the race and culture she apparently didn't know that much about she then started appreciating and embracing it more and realized way later how harshly she responded in the controversy

I just saw the main voice actress' response video again and it's awful. She could have just easily said that the spanish in the show is broken because that is the reality of how some people in the US with spanish/latin roots speak and that represents them but no instead of that she talked shit about the language and called it a colonizer language so we shouldn't care about the grammer.

It certainly is _very_ California humor, I got it because I live here but even then I only got it because I had to infer that the show was based on LA and I _knew_ that LA thinks about earthquakes a lot. But I'm sure most people outside the region don't know or would've thought about it when they see it, especially those father away in LatAm. The joke is just too California-specific, it's effectiveness drops exponentially as you go further away. Add to it that the name is _very_ self-deprecating, too much for a kids show IMO.
I haven’t seen the show nor do I think I will but for the most part this controversy shouldn’t have happened to begin with. The context of the show depicts 2nd or even 3rd gen Latin American kids. I can speak, read and write Spanish but I still confuse proper tenses or plurals (like in the show “oye” instead of “oiga” or I say something in past/future tense when I mean present tense) it’s very common for Latin Americans (myself included) to either know little Spanish or none at all. I was sort of “forced” to learn Spanish because I’m 2nd generation. TLDR; it was just a grammar mistake complaining about saying one word wrong when some Americans can’t pronounce some of our own (english) words correctly is just people wanting problems. P.S. I’m only addressing the initial “controversy” not what the VA said cuz let’s be real it’s her fault.
@@J3ZU35 no offense, but I don't think the characters in Primos are supposed to be Latin American, though some of the promotional and pre-production material used terms like Hispanic, Latino or Latinx, the characters are "Chicanos", people whose parents or grandparents emigrated from Latin America to the U.S., that was one of the things that people from Latin America complained about when the first trailer for Primos was shown I mean, speaking as someone who lives in South America, I don't have anything against the show, I actually watched the first episode and found it okay, and seeing many posts from Latin Americans on social media, aside from obvious trolling or empty complaints, I think most people are getting tired that Latino representation in U.S. tends to default to Mexican stereotypes, but I know that the show is based on Natasha's childhood and that's wonderful, the main issue is that some Latin Americans still feel that U.S. productions tend to be somewhat condescending towards them
No offense taken I enjoy learning more about our Spanish culture explaining my experiences. And I’m speaking strictly about this show since it’s based on the creators experience. It does suck to have hundreds of years of different Hispanic, Latin and Spanish culture just be boiled down to stereotypes. But I believe it would still apply when it comes to the pronunciation of the words, people shouldn’t be butt hurt over mispronunciation of a word. Them being kids and moving to an English speaking country would make saying some Spanish or English words harder to say or you’d use them in the wrong context. Like I explained before.
From what I saw in other videos, the creator (or MC VA, can't remember which) have little to no experience about her mexican heritage, only knowing stuff from her grandparents, heck, they never even WENT to Mexico, so her "knowledge" seems very americanized, so claiming she's telling about her "culture" is as accurate as someone watching so much shows from somewhere they never went and try to make one set there thinking that stuff they saw is what often happen. But let's give credit where credit is due: they DID changed stuff that people pointed it was bad, like REALLY bad, and that seems great, pointing to the right direction. However, the fact they never formally apologized from the heavy blunders previously mentioned (I didn't saw if they posted somewhere, at least), and the VA double it down, we can't say things are all "nice", there still is some bitter aftertaste IMO.

While it does show some heavy contrast between the latin culture and the expectations set in the US and I do believe it makes for a good setting for TV, it doesn't pass muster as a proper show. Stuff like the Mexico filter doesn't help make that distinction either.

Nacho as a name/nickname is fine but there are 2 nachos, big nacho’s original name was Big Ben, why couldn’t one of them be Benito? While it is possible that 2 siblings are named the same, most of the time they would have a middle name to differentiate them. Ex. My dad, my brother and myself are all called José but we all have different middle names: Luis, Rafael and Javier respectively. Having big nacho and little nacho seemed lazy to me, they missed an opportunity to diversify the names a bit.
I’m half-white half-mexican, just like Tater. I never understood the hate this show got aside from the criticisms towards Tater’s VA. The internet’s attitude toward Primos definitely made me feel like something was wrong with me, and I only felt more conflicted when I started to really sympathize with the creator and her experiences. I’m glad this show seems pretty good though. I feel like I’m too old for it so I probably won’t watch it, but at this point I think I can say I appreciate its existence.
Sorry. But nothing is wrong with you. You need to divide art from creators. Humans are not perfect. Everyone commit mistakes. This is the problem is not about the show's crew. But the development and early concepts (some was called "Nacho"... that's a nickname than a real name). The whole show is a time-bomb. This will explode, and not in hype. .
As a Mexican it’s a very good they renamed earthquake Heights into a more less offensive and renaming Coquita with a more appropriate name is great. It’s extremely good that the creators of the show actually made the effort to make the show If they didn’t, people are going to still see that the show looks like it’s pouring us Mexicans 👍
Imagine if a Mexican cartoon was a flipped premise and they named the neighborhood a variation of “9/11” or called it Hijack Heights. That’s kinda how the original neighborhood’s name felt like after those Mexican earthquakes. I know they didn’t mean anything ill, but it’s unintentionally dark humored. And that part of me enjoys that humor. But if it requires a lot of effort to explain a joke, then it doesn’t exactly work.
5:37 re-watching this video, I feel like that titlecard interaction gives out much more context for everything wrong with the show. Tater doesn't even _try!_ It's just a monotone "Summer of I can't say that" without even being like "Summer of ku... keh... _chores"_ (considering the titlecard literally says chores) or yeah jumping to "I can't say that" but after trying. That would've given more personality to the character, making it evident that it's one of those hard compound words for non-spanish speakers to say. But instead, she looks like the negative stereotype that LatAm have of Americans where they don't even _try_ and don't feel compelled to do so. Even Jay delivered the line much better than Tater did, because he at least tried to add some comedic effect of trying to interpret it, passing the "what is this word even" thought to us viewers effectively. Tater might as well just say "Summer of whatever I don't care" for all it seemingly matters.

Im not Mexican nor am i Latin in any way but even tho the show is stereotypical, this is actually based off of the creator's life so even tho it is stereotypical, the creator's life does meet those stereotypes. The creator has over 20 cousins that she lived with so thats probably why it would come off that way.

Honestly, i do believe that most of the things is actually fitting and isnt "racist" at all. Im maybe not Latino, but my heritage have two nations combined. It's actually common to make jokes based on your national food or call your siblings this way. Like, you just used things you knew yourself best and surrounded by. Also, can relate to this language barrier. I partially do know my mothers native language, but i cant make coherent sentences and as a result - i don't understand my mother side of the family (they do make fun of me XD). But still don't get why voice actress used this "conquistador language" as a defense. Most of the nations did invade other countries at one point of the time and claim their territories. So what?

IMO nah I don’t think it deserves the hate now. I kinda enjoy this ngl. I watched the show to form my own opinion. (Looks like Disney listened because they changed Terre Motto to another name, don’t know why they went with that in the first place) but other than that I related to Tater a lot! loool. I like the characters, their designs, and the show's aesthetic is unapologetically messy. Overall I really like this show.Will this be a hit? Idk. But it’s overall really good.
It doesn't help that the aesthetics are just so... unpleasant? Not that its cluttered and messy- that's kinda the point. Its that there's so many off choices that feel so bad, especially regarding relative head sizes. There's no in-universe consistency regarding specific shapes, and consistent deviances from said shapes that tell you how big their heads should be- despite the way they all use the smooth, """'Cal Arts""" look. (even though I feel like that term is generally way overused) Its hard to quite pin down, but it just makes me feel so uncomfortable with the show, and feel like the characters feel out of space within their environments and in relation to each other
true, i found tater, the dad, and the grandma to look like they were from completely different shows. it feels like some characters are very strictly on-model while characters like tater or chacha are free and bouncy.

The yellow is just Las Angeles and Southern California in general. When I was Tater's age, I lived in Riverside, California. I also have every kind of cousin you can imagine. Cousin cousins, adopted cousins, step cousins, honorary cousins (not directly my cousins but cousins of cousins that I had to hang out with anyway). This is the most realistic summer vacation themed cartoon ever made. I'm a full-grown adult, and this show was nine episodes of pure nostalgia. It's perfect. 😊

I'm Latina, FROM Latin America and have never been to the US... These characters are my cousins. We also used to spend the summer vacation on my uncle's beach house. I actually already got kinda emotional watching some scenes, cuz it reminded ME of things that happened on my family. But the thing is Latin people are NOT ALL THE SAME (I know, what a twist) so of course it's not going to resonate with EVERYONE, we are not a monolith!! What annoyed me the most was the VA's reponse cuz really, she gonna say that in ENGLISH And the weird "they're ugly" critisism. Like, for the love of god, they sound like White Americans/Europeans that see anyone from any other ethnicity as "exotic"/attractive looking. JUST STOP! Guess what, there's "ugly" people everywhere. Disney straight up had to go back into the show and change the names of one character and one location, because they were too racist. This is the one time Disney straight up admitted their show is racist, there is no discussion to be had here.
As someone who knows not a single Spanish, I really feel like I don't have a say in whether the show should be cancelled. All I can say is I do like this show so far and I'm enjoying it casually
Imma be real Im a huge Loud House and Casagrandes fan...and i really like more than the latter because it has that gravity falls sense of continuity, slowly learning more about the characters and establishing status quos over a course of episodes and not just all in the first episode! Yes Loud House and Casagrandes are more gag centric shows and i love that about them they dont HAVE to change imo, just its nice this has a balance if the plot and gags. Its like comparing...Tom and Jerrys slapstick to Looney Tunes' Verbal Wit AND slapstick.
As a Latin American, I wasn’t actually upset by some of things in the original version for this show. I thought stuff like “Cookita” and “Terremoto Heights” were pretty funny (but that probably says a lot about my humor). I get why people would be upset by some of the stereotypes presented here like the yellow sky thing which is pretty annoying, but there’s other ones that I don’t get. Like why did people bash the concept of extended families living in a single home when other stuff like Coco and Encanto did it and nobody complained about that? (Also people can complain about this trope all they want but it’s very common in Latin families) I think the one thing that did actually offend me was Myrna Velasco’s (Tater’s VA) rant on the Spanish language. It’s pure cringe and just reeks of someone who is terminally online and shapes their personality from the internet. With that being said, the actual show itself is pretty harmless. It doesn’t interest me whatsoever and just feels like a generic Disney comedy show (it doesn’t help that it has that ugly “Cal-Art” style that most modern American animation refuses to let go. I’m more of an anime guy anyway, so there’s that.
It's not that people HATED the show so much that they DIDN'T want to give it a try, it's only because the main voice actress ruined the vibe and hype of the show when she opened her fat mouth and that made people not want to even give it a try. There is always "separating the art from it's creator" but when it came to this specific situation she made it unbearable to even want to do that.
The answer is yes. They should have dealt with the VA who decided to run her mouth and made her apologize for attacking potential viewers and robbing them of more profit in the process.

Still, I think this whole drama about "representation" should've stopped years ago or not even born to begin with, because the way I see it is it's often Americans who actually get pissed off by it on behalf of the ones who theoretically "should be offended". Not every country is as "sensitive" as the US is about... everything really. It's called "emotional nuance". Say it was a Brazilian-American instead who made a show about funkeiros in the US eating feijoada at the street and annoying their neighbors with loud shitty music about vulgar displays of coitus in public while saying "coé malandro ta me tirano, perdeu perdeu passa tudo ae". Then ask me, an actual Brazilian, if I would give two shits about that and be "offended" by it. The most I would do is probably laugh my ass off and compare it to the Nutshack, because I know that's not "me", it's just an exaggerated satire (and honestly not as out-of-touch as you'd expect, put those two in a motorcycle and you've hit gold). And before you say "hurr durr but Brazil was offended too in the past", I'll let you know I and many others were actually pissed when some censors happened here (a couple of simpsons episodes in Brazil, the cs_rio map from CS 1.6, etc.). It wasn't us Brazilians who got pissed, it was our government. Because we know that's the actual reality of the country we live in, but they didn't (and still don't) want you to know that so you would keep giving them your extremely valuable money.
I watched the premiere and I honestly thought the show was very good. Sure there's nothing new or groundbreaking about it, it's a simple slice of life family cartoon which clearly has hearts in it, but it's all around a very good cartoon. It was just simply judged too hard.
I checked out the first 2 episodes and it's pretty decent. Would I say the backlash was a bit overboard? Yes. Has this story been done before? Yes but we all relate to them in our own ways and we do like those kind of stories if they're executed right. Do I think Tater's voice actor shot herself in the foot with her statements and ended up fanning the flames of hate towards the show? 100%. But do I think Primos is the worst show ever? Not really. Not everyone will get behind it, but to each their own I say.
I legit want to know what made Nelly so cynical this young. Also I want siblings who unconditionally care about each other and support each other while being honest with each other
I’ve never really been a fan of cartoons in recent time where a good number of characters have overdone cheeks, giving them that “puffy” expression. It just comes off as obnoxious to me.
The main problem (among many other problems) with this show is that it stereotypically depicts us Latinos, which does more harm than good in the long run, despite people like Alpha Jay Show finding it entertaining. Disney has a long history of misrepresenting cultures, but once in a while they get it right, like with Encanto. However, if they can’t correctly execute the authenticity of Latinos, then Disney should stick with their Chicano shows (stuck in the middle, gabby duran, etc.). That way they still can represent Hispanic-Americans without bunching them up with Hispanics and confusing the audience by creating a generalization that they’re both the same culturally.
I watched the first two segments the other night and I kinda enjoyed it. I can’t speak for the people who are offended by the show since I have no Mexican descent, but it’s good that a lot of the big problems that people had with it were either fixed or explained. 😀
I think the thing isn’t that the representation was racist, but more of that not being what we want to show kids. For example let’s use Craig of the creek. As a black person, I can tell you we do in fact sometimes live up to stereotypes. CotC makes their characters’ behavior distinctly black without furthering stereotypes. (Even if they are true lived experiences) we have to remember that all kids will see these shows. Not just the races that they will center. So some stereotypes are probably just… maybe not the wisest to put into the minds of young children
I saw the series’ new episodes both on Thursday and this morning, and I have to say, this cartoon was very well produced. Additionally, it is so coincidental of this release being timed potentially to me being in the same part of CA that Tater is in just a few months from now. I feel so sick that I have had to hear negative comments against the series well before it was officially released, it’s as much close to judging a book by its cover. Disney has really come back giving Cartoon Network a taste of its medicine when it comes to more recent toons. They really cared about the quality of the cartoon and I felt that if they didn’t delay it and make the needed changes, then Disney simply didn’t care about if the show was in good taste or not. Sometimes this type of scrutiny can end up in a win win for both sides, as a few tweaks really can make a difference in this situation. Tater is such a lovable character, and I definitely liked that invisible bond that, while she does feel bothersome when she’s around her primos, she still loves them. It is realism at its best. I also like the appearances of Cousin Bud and ChaCha as well, they kind of resonate with my own siblings and their similar attitudes.
why do people criticize the show for having broken Spanish, even without broken Spanish there's still all sorts of ways to pronounce Spanish words depending on where someone grows up.

Am i the only one who thinks the parents are the worst part of the show? You give your baby to a 10 year old to babysit on a regular basis? Then you decide to let her 12 cousins live in your house? While you still have a baby you apparently cant take care of alone. Then you dont tell your daughter about the plan and 14 children now stay in the same small room also without asking. Im sry but thats just not okay.
14 in a single room is definitely is an exaggeration for the purpose of it being a cartoon, but as a Mexican I've definitely had to host a multitude of visiting cousins in a similar fashion. We make due by spreading everyone across, and yeah sometimes we do share rooms. I think the max that we've had in a room was 2 beds + 2 sleeping on the floor (with mountains of proper bedding, because every Mexican always has multiple closets full of bedding) with maybe some others sleeping in the living room.

My problem is that the show acts like its normal to dump everything on your 10 year old child without asking or preparing. Especially as a neurodivergent child this hurts. I got a breakdown after learning that after one week of summer camp i would be staying with my grandparents for another week and not stay at home. Cause it was simply too much and no one told me.
I feel one thing that didn't help was how the show was revealed without much context. The big reveal was the show's intro, which had the large "Terremoto Heights" sign, the "yellow filter", the misspelled catchphrase, and the stereotypical names for the cousins. As a LatAm, my initial reaction to that was a big "Okaaaaay..." but after a few minutes of pondering I figured there had to be proper context to this. Still, I feel they should have started with something to explain the show better, like an introductory video such as "Hi, I'm Tater and this is my family", then most of the backlash would have been avoided. But then, the VA came out and made the worst response to fans ever, which as someone else said was the true cause of the backlash. I don't think you can blame people for feeling insulted when someone who works on the show addresses criticism like that, and now the show is forever tainted because people will always think of that when watching. I do feel bad for the creator, because she definitely got a lot of flack for something she didn't deserve nor was her fault.

(Sure, they were referencing an earthquake that happened in Mexico decades ago And not the fact that California, a place where many of the people working on the show lives in, gets lots of earthquakes. Definitely....) And yeah, some of the characters are ugly. but uh.... welcome to western animation? Our artists tend to perfer unique characters to conventionally attractive ones. My main issue was the fact that if they had waited until the show was released, then they could've addressed everything. But Unfortunately, things did NOT go according to plan.
I think the Backlash was because of the voice actress had a terrible view about Spanish language in for Latin American (she was very smug and kinda entitled) and the initial names were kinda rough. They should consult some experts in language and culture for Mexican and American families. Also in recent decade or so in California there is a very high demand for teaching Spanish and other languages starting in elementary school. If you look online there are School Districts that teach Spanish since Kindergarten (fully integrated Spanish) and as they grow they teach both English and Spanish. The goal is for the children to have a completely immersive experience in Spanish first. And then they could continue Spanish in middle school and high school as Natural Speaker. Such as instead of taking Spanish 101 in middle school they could continue to take Spanish for Advance Speakers, Native speakers (the name varies from schools, but it’s middle school level class not the basic intro to Spanish 101)
To me what made things worse was the voice actress. She pretty much caused the fire to spread. Also she didn't try to tell us any information what the show would be like.

Yes. I think the people saying "It shouldn't have gotten hate before it premiered" are missing the point, because the discussion is not about the actual quality of the show, that is irrelevant, the discussion is about the blatant racism surrounding the show. Even if the show turned out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, this would not make the stereotypes and behind the scenes racism surrounding the show any less bad. The quality of the show isn't really relevant to the discussion, because the reason people are getting made at the show is not about that.
There was no racism or xenophobia from any crew member. Yes, I will admit what the VA said about the Spanish language was tone deaf but she was getting harassed and threatened over the show's intro and her response was spontaneous. As a latino myself I find the reaction to her response a bit too much because she didn't even say all that. If anything I agree with her in a way cus if you speak Spanish yourself you see latinos using incorrect grammar and punctuation literally all the time, a lot don't even know how to even properly type words in Spanish yet everyone was getting mad over something as trivial as 'oye primos'

Sure, not everyone falls under that umbrella - not all nerds wear glasses and not all geeks are into collecting toys, for example - but we should acknowledge that there are people who do happen live lives exactly like the proported stereotypes.
I'm glad to hear that this is actually a nice show, and I do like that Tater is more of an introvert that wants to be left alone but doesn't let that override her compassion for her family. I can relate to that since I struggle with the latter.

That's pretty much the youngest child from one of my uncles. He can't speak Spanish and it's funny he speaks English to our Spanish speaking cousins while we play video games.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the main problem with this show's initial presentation was the fact that it was touted as representation for and marketed towards a general Latino audience instead of its Actual Target Audience of specific USAmerican Latinos. If Disney hadn't fallen in the increasingly common and frustrating pitfall of conflating Latinos from Latin America with Latinos from the US despite their vastly different experiences (which makes them pretty much completely separate from one another), none of this would've happened to begin with... Or if Kleine had made the distinction before the lead VA ran her mouth. Either way, I'm glad the show is decent despite its rough start and I hope this doesn't discourage future creators from telling their stories.

Let me tell you something - right now is an utterly bizarre time for television. Because almost all of the last shows that my generation had any sort of connection towards have ended or are going to end. Amphibia, Owl House, Molly McGee, Young Sheldon, Raven’s Home, Big Mouth, The Good Doctor, Yellowstone, Cobra Kai, Stranger Things, What We Do in the Shadows…hell, even Kamp Koral has an uncertain future now that its second (and last?) season has dropped. I’m telling you, the list is just endless.
Is there any more obvious sign of this than the fact that Bunk’d, the Disney show that refused to end, is going to miraculously end next week? It is just flat-out wild how much of the TV landscape of the late-2010s has been snapped away in just the last year alone.
And as all of these shows are disappearing, all we have left is a bunch of shows, least of all Primos, that will not, and will never, have the same impact on us as an Internet.

Latin American and Hispanic cultures have thier odd nicknames. For example, my parents used to call me 'Cangregito' (little crab), and my sister 'Pulpito' (little octopus), and there wasn't much reason to it. And in a more ironic sense, I would be called 'flaca' (skinny girl) somtimes, even if I am overweight, and they would call my sister 'gordita' (little fat girl) when she is skinny. Somtimes it is more litteral and they call my sister 'flaca' instead. These are all terms of endearment, so calling a boy named Ignacio, 'Nacho' isn't out of left feild.
Also, we litterally have people in the past, named Richard, Bob, or whatever, commonly nicknamed d*ck, so...

I honestly feel bad for Natasha Kline. After watching the first two episodes of the show it really seems like she just wanted to make a cartoon about her childhood. Yeah, it had harmful stereotypes, but most of them were fixed and they weren't put in there for ill intent. It's Tater's VA that completely destroyed the reputation of the show.

People need to realize that Latinos aren't a single cultural group. They speak completely different languages, and come from completely different ethnic backgrounds. Only in the US are they considered one group. But in Latin America, two people from the same country can completely hate each other for racial or cultural reasons.
Yeah, I agree with that, it kind of reminds me how last year some people said Latinos should go see Blue Beetle to support Latino representation in Hollywood movies, but the movie was a box-office bomb in the U.S. and also in various Latin American countries, the movie itself wasn't bad but it reflected a very U.S. centric view of Latino culture, mostly about Mexican immigrants, though the soundtrack did include songs from artists from different LatAm countries
I know that Primos is mostly based around the show's creator childhood experiences and that's great and it's cool that chicano children in the U.S. can have a show they could relate to, but most of the backlash against the show and especially the VAs response came from people from Latin America that are tired of seeing the same clichés, stereotypes and how Latin American culture in U.S. productions are mostly based on Mexican culture.

My issue with the broken spanish is that doesn't sound like real broken spanish, there are no details like little pauses betwin words when you are trying to translate in your head what you whant to say, or bad use of gendered words.
Or a person correcting you on grammar. There is always an adult or a smart kid that corrects your usage of words. The older teen cousins could be that character. Or even the grandma. If she knew more English they could help the MC speak better while understanding that they don't always know what people are saying in Spanish. Sometimes a lot of children will tell another closer relative what did they say so they can better understand. Especially when you know they are talking about you.

In a way I am in the same boat of the creator of the show which is why I don't care about the main character having broken language. I am unable to speak Italian since some of my dad's family is Italian and also Romani among Dutch and Russian. The names of the setting and characters was a big yikes. However, what drove it in the coffin for me was the VA.
Mexican Guy who grew up near LA. It's ok for Kids. It was never meant for anybody above the age of 8. I actually found it entertaining,I thought I wasn't gonna like it but a sense of familiarity came from watching it.
I have a very similar background to the characters in this show so I probably would have enjoyed it if it was out when I was a kid. Not everyone’s Latino experience is the same but I think this show really does portray an authentic experience for many people in this country.
I hate having to defend this show, but I grew up in California, I can really relate to the intro. The city’s name never ed bothered me because that was just Californian humor. We have a stadium called the Epicenter. It was embarrassing so so so many Latinos react to the show this way, the creator was straight that the show was a Chicano representation.

Yeah. Not sure why people got all up in arms over the broken Spanish thing, either. Like, the creator said that the show revolves around her experience. Many of my classmates growing up were the children or grandchildren of immigrants, and so they ended up using "Tejano" terminology instead of proper Spanish. Like saying "carro" instead of "el coche". In my community, it was never made into a big deal.
When you're the child of an immigrant, of course you're going to have trouble speaking proper Spanish in a country full of English speakers. That was one of the creator's specific struggles growing up. It's not like she tried to claim that she was right in using improper Spanish grammar.

The concerns over the name Cuquita were pretty valid tho, as the show would inevitably air in Latam, and in some countries cuca means vagina.
Also, things only started to really get heated after Tater’s VA opened her mouth and started spewing inflammatory messages instead of explaining that since Tater is a third generation immigrant, her Spanish is rusty and that part of the show would be dedicated to her reconnecting with her language and culture. She could’ve just said that to quell the concerns of the community, but instead she hypocritically called Spanish a colonizer language while speaking English and called people grammar Nazis for expressing concern over the fact the intro is conjugated incorrectly.
Earthquakes are a sensitive topic in most of Latin America, specially Mexico, Chile and California, but people do joke about it, I think people did overreact a bit at the terremoto heights thing, even if it was a tad tasteless for a kids show either way. It would be like calling a town for a children’s show set in Arkansas “Tornadoville” or a town set in Florida “Hurricane Beach”. Like, yeah, it’s funny, dark humor and all that, but it does feel out of place in children’s TV.

I feel bad for the lady that made this show. I don’t think she intended to make a show that offended people all she did was make something based on her own life experiences. I think the controversy probably would’ve died down or been forgotten if either she and her crew ignored the controversy or if she had just made a statement saying the show was based on her own experience and that obviously her experience isn’t a reflection of every Hispanic person’s life experience. But that video the voice actress made where she sounds really snarky soured a bunch of people’s opinions on the show before it even came out so some people probably won’t give it a chance because of that.
That the thing, this show is not a good representation of Latam. It is for those latinos that are way more american and don't speak Spanish at all and only have stereotypical aspect of latam. The difference between a Latino living in latam vs on born in USA is just too big

I think what needs to be remembered regarding this show is that the characters aren't Mexican or from any other LatAm country, they are Chicano. Much of the critiques regarding authenticity ignore this fact, often willingly because of how Chicanos are viewed as 'diet' or even 'lesser' Hispanics.
The main problem was it was presented as a celebration of latinos when in reality it was more of a chicano/latino descendant gringo audience, and it actually is not bad at all but as a latino myself I can say that most latinos are very intolerant when it comes to gringos touching anything latino related, especially in this day and age where most latino audience are still conservative and very close minded and believe in the go woke go broke discourse. Aside from that, the real controversy for me was how tone deaf and offensive the VA was saying horrible things about colonization and the spanish language.
I'm Mexican-American my parents are from México but my sister and I were born in the States she speaks Spanish I don't my parents weren't the ones who taught me how to speak they spoke mainly spanish around the house and the people around me were mainly my family. I had to go to a speech therapist and the lady taught me English🤷🏻♀️ i was a muted child.
My mom had to pick one language because I was having trouble learning to speak. My mom said since I was in the US I should speak English. I got a lot of bs for that. Mexicans who live here for years who couldn’t speak English would give big ol’ speeches on how I need to learn Spanish and that Spanish was more important for me to know then English, you know in a country that speaks mostly English. I grow to hate the language. I know it’s dumb but when I hear someone only speaking Spanish and teaching their kids Spanish first really angers me. I am trying to get over it but it’s so hard.

It’s mostly from Latinos out of the US. Many were not even Mexican. The little girl’s nickname was popular in Mexican homes but other Latin American countries it was a dirty word. It certainly is _very_ California humor, I got it because I live here but even then I only got it because I had to infer that the show was based on LA and I _knew_ that LA thinks about earthquakes a lot. But I'm sure most people outside the region don't know or would've thought about it when they see it, especially those father away in LatAm.
The joke is just too California-specific, it's effectiveness drops exponentially as you go further away. Add to it that the name is _very_ self-deprecating, too much for a kids show IMO.

I haven’t seen the show nor do I think I will but for the most part this controversy shouldn’t have happened to begin with. The context of the show depicts 2nd or even 3rd gen Latin American kids.
I can speak, read and write Spanish but I still confuse proper tenses or plurals (like in the show “oye” instead of “oiga” or I say something in past/future tense when I mean present tense) it’s very common for Latin Americans (myself included) to either know little Spanish or none at all. I was sort of “forced” to learn Spanish because I’m 2nd generation.
TLDR; it was just a grammar mistake complaining about saying one word wrong when some Americans can’t pronounce some of our own (english) words correctly is just people wanting problems.
P.S. I’m only addressing the initial “controversy” not what the VA said cuz let’s be real it’s her fault.

I mean, speaking as someone who lives in South America, I don't have anything against the show, I actually watched the first episode and found it okay, and seeing many posts from Latin Americans on social media, aside from obvious trolling or empty complaints, I think most people are getting tired that Latino representation in U.S. tends to default to Mexican stereotypes, but I know that the show is based on Natasha's childhood and that's wonderful, the main issue is that some Latin Americans still feel that U.S. productions tend to be somewhat condescending towards them
No offense taken I enjoy learning more about our Spanish culture explaining my experiences. And I’m speaking strictly about this show since it’s based on the creators experience.
It does suck to have hundreds of years of different Hispanic, Latin and Spanish culture just be boiled down to stereotypes.
But I believe it would still apply when it comes to the pronunciation of the words, people shouldn’t be butt hurt over mispronunciation of a word. Them being kids and moving to an English speaking country would make saying some Spanish or English words harder to say or you’d use them in the wrong context. Like I explained before.
From what I saw in other videos, the creator (or MC VA, can't remember which) have little to no experience about her mexican heritage, only knowing stuff from her grandparents, heck, they never even WENT to Mexico, so her "knowledge" seems very americanized, so claiming she's telling about her "culture" is as accurate as someone watching so much shows from somewhere they never went and try to make one set there thinking that stuff they saw is what often happen.
But let's give credit where credit is due: they DID changed stuff that people pointed it was bad, like REALLY bad, and that seems great, pointing to the right direction. However, the fact they never formally apologized from the heavy blunders previously mentioned (I didn't saw if they posted somewhere, at least), and the VA double it down, we can't say things are all "nice", there still is some bitter aftertaste IMO.

While it does show some heavy contrast between the latin culture and the expectations set in the US and I do believe it makes for a good setting for TV, it doesn't pass muster as a proper show. Nacho as a name/nickname is fine but there are 2 nachos, big nacho’s original name was Big Ben, why couldn’t one of them be Benito?
While it is possible that 2 siblings are named the same, most of the time they would have a middle name to differentiate them. Ex. My dad, my brother and myself are all called José but we all have different middle names: Luis, Rafael and Javier respectively. Having big nacho and little nacho seemed lazy to me, they missed an opportunity to diversify the names a bit.

I’m half-white half-mexican, just like Tater. I never understood the hate this show got aside from the criticisms towards Tater’s VA. The internet’s attitude toward Primos definitely made me feel like something was wrong with me, and I only felt more conflicted when I started to really sympathize with the creator and her experiences. I’m glad this show seems pretty good though. I feel like I’m too old for it so I probably won’t watch it, but at this point I think I can say I appreciate its existence.

Imagine if a Mexican cartoon was a flipped premise and they named the neighborhood a variation of “9/11” or called it Hijack Heights. That’s kinda how the original neighborhood’s name felt like after those Mexican earthquakes.
I know they didn’t mean anything ill, but it’s unintentionally dark humored. And that part of me enjoys that humor. But if it requires a lot of effort to explain a joke, then it doesn’t exactly work.

5:37 re-watching this video, I feel like that titlecard interaction gives out much more context for everything wrong with the show.
Tater doesn't even _try!_ It's just a monotone "Summer of I can't say that" without even being like "Summer of ku... keh... _chores"_ (considering the titlecard literally says chores) or yeah jumping to "I can't say that" but after trying. That would've given more personality to the character, making it evident that it's one of those hard compound words for non-spanish speakers to say. But instead, she looks like the negative stereotype that LatAm have of Americans where they don't even _try_ and don't feel compelled to do so.
Even Jay delivered the line much better than Tater did, because he at least tried to add some comedic effect of trying to interpret it, passing the "what is this word even" thought to us viewers effectively. Tater might as well just say "Summer of whatever I don't care" for all it seemingly matters.

Im not Mexican nor am i Latin in any way but even tho the show is stereotypical, this is actually based off of the creator's life so even tho it is stereotypical, the creator's life does meet those stereotypes. Honestly, i do believe that most of the things is actually fitting and isnt "racist" at all. Im maybe not Latino, but my heritage have two nations combined. It's actually common to make jokes based on your national food or call your siblings this way. Like, you just used things you knew yourself best and surrounded by. I partially do know my mothers native language, but i cant make coherent sentences and as a result - i don't understand my mother side of the family (they do make fun of me XD).

The yellow is just Las Angeles and Southern California in general. When I was Tater's age, I lived in Riverside, California. I also have every kind of cousin you can imagine. Cousin cousins, adopted cousins, step cousins, honorary cousins (not directly my cousins but cousins of cousins that I had to hang out with anyway). This is the most realistic summer vacation themed cartoon ever made. I'm a full-grown adult, and this show was nine episodes of pure nostalgia. It's perfect. 😊

I'm Latina, FROM Latin America and have never been to the US... These characters are my cousins. We also used to spend the summer vacation on my uncle's beach house. I actually already got kinda emotional watching some scenes, cuz it reminded ME of things that happened on my family. But the thing is Latin people are NOT ALL THE SAME (I know, what a twist) so of course it's not going to resonate with EVERYONE, we are not a monolith!!

Disney straight up had to go back into the show and change the names of one character and one location, because they were too racist. This is the one time Disney straight up admitted their show is racist, there is no discussion to be had here.
Plus, it’s mostly a Loud House and Casagrandes knock of.

As someone who knows not a single Spanish, I really feel like I don't have a say in whether the show should be cancelled. All I can say is I do like this show so far and I'm enjoying it casually
Imma be real Im a huge Loud House and Casagrandes fan...and i really like more than the latter because it has that gravity falls sense of continuity, slowly learning more about the characters and establishing status quos over a course of episodes and not just all in the first episode!
Yes Loud House and Casagrandes are more gag centric shows and i love that about them they dont HAVE to change imo, just its nice this has a balance if the plot and gags.
Its like comparing...Tom and Jerrys slapstick to Looney Tunes' Verbal Wit AND slapstick.

As a Latin American, I wasn’t actually upset by some of things in the original version for this show. I thought stuff like “Cookita” and “Terremoto Heights” were pretty funny (but that probably says a lot about my humor). I get why people would be upset by some of the stereotypes presented here like the yellow sky thing which is pretty annoying, but there’s other ones that I don’t get. Like why did people bash the concept of extended families living in a single home when other stuff like Coco and Encanto did it and nobody complained about that? (Also people can complain about this trope all they want but it’s very common in Latin families) I think the one thing that did actually offend me was Myrna Velasco’s (Tater’s VA) rant on the Spanish language. It’s pure cringe and just reeks of someone who is terminally online and shapes their personality from the internet.
With that being said, the actual show itself is pretty harmless. It doesn’t interest me whatsoever and just feels like a generic Disney comedy show (it doesn’t help that it has that ugly “Cal-Art” style that most modern American animation refuses to let go.
I’m more of an anime guy anyway, so there’s that.
It's not that people HATED the show so much that they DIDN'T want to give it a try, it's only because the main voice actress ruined the vibe and hype of the show when she opened her fat mouth and that made people not want to even give it a try. There is always "separating the art from it's creator" but when it came to this specific situation she made it unbearable to even want to do that.
Honestly Primos is not as bad as people said it was going to be. It's actually a pretty good show.

8:23 To be perfectly honest, I usually apply the "Everyone is American on the Internet unless proven otherwise" rule from the get-go so I'm not shocked at all. Still, I think this whole drama about "representation" should've stopped years ago or not even born to begin with, because the way I see it is it's often Americans who actually get pissed off by it on behalf of the ones who theoretically "should be offended". Not every country is as "sensitive" as the US is about... everything really. It's called "emotional nuance".
Say it was a Brazilian-American instead who made a show about funkeiros in the US eating feijoada at the street and annoying their neighbors with loud shitty music about vulgar displays of coitus in public while saying "coé malandro ta me tirano, perdeu perdeu passa tudo ae". Then ask me, an actual Brazilian, if I would give two shits about that and be "offended" by it. The most I would do is probably laugh my ass off and compare it to the Nutshack, because I know that's not "me", it's just an exaggerated satire (and honestly not as out-of-touch as you'd expect, put those two in a motorcycle and you've hit gold).
And before you say "hurr durr but Brazil was offended too in the past", I'll let you know I and many others were actually pissed when some censors happened here (a couple of simpsons episodes in Brazil, the cs_rio map from CS 1.6, etc.). It wasn't us Brazilians who got pissed, it was our government. Because we know that's the actual reality of the country we live in, but they didn't (and still don't) want you to know that so you would keep giving them your extremely valuable money.

I watched the premiere and I honestly thought the show was very good. Sure there's nothing new or groundbreaking about it, it's a simple slice of life family cartoon which clearly has hearts in it, but it's all around a very good cartoon. It was just simply judged too hard.
I really wish people got over it the show was not even released and even after a year people are still whining about it
I checked out the first 2 episodes and it's pretty decent.
Would I say the backlash was a bit overboard? Yes. Has this story been done before? Yes but we all relate to them in our own ways and we do like those kind of stories if they're executed right. Do I think Tater's voice actor shot herself in the foot with her statements and ended up fanning the flames of hate towards the show? 100%.
But do I think Primos is the worst show ever? Not really. Not everyone will get behind it, but to each their own I say.

I’ve never really been a fan of cartoons in recent time where a good number of characters have overdone cheeks, giving them that “puffy” expression. It just comes off as obnoxious to me.
The main problem (among many other problems) with this show is that it stereotypically depicts us Latinos, which does more harm than good in the long run, despite people like Alpha Jay Show finding it entertaining. Disney has a long history of misrepresenting cultures, but once in a while they get it right, like with Encanto. However, if they can’t correctly execute the authenticity of Latinos, then Disney should stick with their Chicano shows (stuck in the middle, gabby duran, etc.). That way they still can represent Hispanic-Americans without bunching them up with Hispanics and confusing the audience by creating a generalization that they’re both the same culturally.
The thing is this show is for the Chicano audience because the creator is one
I watched the first two segments the other night and I kinda enjoyed it. I can’t speak for the people who are offended by the show since I have no Mexican descent, but it’s good that a lot of the big problems that people had with it were either fixed or explained. 😀

I think the thing isn’t that the representation was racist, but more of that not being what we want to show kids. For example let’s use Craig of the creek. As a black person, I can tell you we do in fact sometimes live up to stereotypes. CotC makes their characters’ behavior distinctly black without furthering stereotypes. (Even if they are true lived experiences) we have to remember that all kids will see these shows. Not just the races that they will center. So some stereotypes are probably just… maybe not the wisest to put into the minds of young children

I saw the series’ new episodes both on Thursday and this morning, and I have to say, this cartoon was very well produced. Additionally, it is so coincidental of this release being timed potentially to me being in the same part of CA that Tater is in just a few months from now. I feel so sick that I have had to hear negative comments against the series well before it was officially released, it’s as much close to judging a book by its cover.
Disney has really come back giving Cartoon Network a taste of its medicine when it comes to more recent toons. They really cared about the quality of the cartoon and I felt that if they didn’t delay it and make the needed changes, then Disney simply didn’t care about if the show was in good taste or not. Sometimes this type of scrutiny can end up in a win win for both sides, as a few tweaks really can make a difference in this situation.
Tater is such a lovable character, and I definitely liked that invisible bond that, while she does feel bothersome when she’s around her primos, she still loves them. It is realism at its best. I also like the appearances of Cousin Bud and ChaCha as well, they kind of resonate with my own siblings and their similar attitudes.

14 in a single room is definitely is an exaggeration for the purpose of it being a cartoon, but as a Mexican I've definitely had to host a multitude of visiting cousins in a similar fashion. We make due by spreading everyone across, and yeah sometimes we do share rooms. I think the max that we've had in a room was 2 beds + 2 sleeping on the floor (with mountains of proper bedding, because every Mexican always has multiple closets full of bedding) with maybe some others sleeping in the living room.

My problem is that the show acts like its normal to dump everything on your 10 year old child without asking or preparing.

I feel one thing that didn't help was how the show was revealed without much context. The big reveal was the show's intro, which had the large "Terremoto Heights" sign, the "yellow filter", the misspelled catchphrase, and the stereotypical names for the cousins. As a LatAm, my initial reaction to that was a big "Okaaaaay..." but after a few minutes of pondering I figured there had to be proper context to this. Still, I feel they should have started with something to explain the show better, like an introductory video such as "Hi, I'm Tater and this is my family", then most of the backlash would have been avoided.
But then, the VA came out and made the worst response to fans ever, which as someone else said was the true cause of the backlash. I don't think you can blame people for feeling insulted when someone who works on the show addresses criticism like that, and now the show is forever tainted because people will always think of that when watching. I do feel bad for the creator, because she definitely got a lot of flack for something she didn't deserve nor was her fault.
Love your nuanced takes, Alpha Jay! I haven't watched the show myself, but it did seem like people were ready to nitpick literally everything.

And yeah, some of the characters are ugly. but uh.... welcome to western animation? Our artists tend to perfer unique characters to conventionally attractive ones. And this isn't new either. Look at Hey Arnold, or anything made by Klasky Csupo

My main issue was the fact that if they had waited until the show was released, then they could've addressed everything.
But Unfortunately, things did NOT go according to plan.
I think the Backlash was because of the voice actress had a terrible view about Spanish language in for Latin American (she was very smug and kinda entitled) and the initial names were kinda rough.
They should consult some experts in language and culture for Mexican and American families. Also in recent decade or so in California there is a very high demand for teaching Spanish and other languages starting in elementary school. If you look online there are School Districts that teach Spanish since Kindergarten (fully integrated Spanish) and as they grow they teach both English and Spanish. The goal is for the children to have a completely immersive experience in Spanish first. And then they could continue Spanish in middle school and high school as Natural Speaker. Such as instead of taking Spanish 101 in middle school they could continue to take Spanish for Advance Speakers, Native speakers (the name varies from schools, but it’s middle school level class not the basic intro to Spanish 101)
The show is not for me honestly, because Idk if it’s just me, but Tater sounds like she has some serious sinus problems
