I’m so appreciative that you not only tested popular PS2 games but also the lesser mentioned ones. I love driv3r and would love to play it on a portable so when I heard you mention it, I was pleasantly surprised. Even if it doesn’t play it, you gave it a mention. Thank you!
Hehe cool I am to please haha
Talking to and for the everyman is why your channel stands out, so great to hear it’s part of your driving ethos. MASSIVELY helpful review...have been on the fence about this one for some time but you have answered my questions perfectly, thank you!
Ah cool. Well then you’re the person I’m picturing when I make these vids!
Oooh, really? Sorry about that, that must be really off-putting :)
Waha
For me, the size of this monster makes this great for gaming on the couch. I actually like the design oddly. The show stopper for me is the screen sharpening and preloaded games. Thanks young lad. Brilliant critique.
Well GammaOS definitely fixes the screen sharpening and it’s quite easy to install.
Absolutely spot ON that a lot of people will be looking at these channels and wanting something that works "straight out of the box". I have a load of roms for my PC emulating and being able to copy those onto a handheld easily to augment what the supplier gives you is one of my tick boxes. But I'm kinda put off the idea of going through setting up everything from scratch on what ultimately is a small screen with a few buttons. Took me long enough on PC. 😆 So showing how these work without any setting up is a big plus, thanks.
I’m so glad you bring up that other TH-camrs are saying that android devices are easy to set up. They are anything but easy. When I got my Retroid pocket 3+ it took me about two days to set it up the way I like it and that wasn’t including the week I spent trying to get all the roms and bios that I needed for it. it was my first time doing something like that so I had to watch hours of video before I felt comfortable even starting to do anything. I think some of the bigger TH-cam channels forget that they have been doing this for a long time, and it comes to easy to them.
Ya it's tricky, especially for beginners
sounds like a skill issue, tbh
@@TheGearChat What, you think people are born just knowing how to set up roms and emulators?
@@TheGearChatyou should keep yourself safe
Solid review! You have a great off the cuff way of talking about these things. Keep doing this style, you're really good at it.
Fyi, for the PSP scaling, you can set that to non-fullscreen in the "display layout editor" option 😘
Thanks! Yes I definitely leant into that a bit more for this vid. I actually went back to the X55 vid and took notes 😊
>when the people I follow also follow each other
Good taste all around?
@@Bendilin can you feel the love?
Also, TechDweeb I am glad my review is solid... imagine if it was all soft and runny...?
18:30 to get it not in Fullscreen you have to go into graphic options, tap Display editor and uncheck adapt to display. 😊
One thing that took me a while to figure out with the stock frontend. You have to add your Game Gear and Sega CD games with your Genesis roms. They all work under the Mega Drive Emulator.
Oh right! Ya I never tested adding games here
A lot of people play emulators on their Android phone, so it would be an easy move for them
My only criticism is that for a video called "ps2 test" you barely show any testing for about 90% of the video. This was more a review video than a PS2 test.
It's in the timestamps?
@@adinwallshe's still right?
@glassattack I guess so.
We have enough PS2 tests for T618 handhelds, it’s nice that adin gives us good extensive commentary imo
Because PS2 games run like trash in this device and that would have been a 30 sec video
The Wood Grain 405V is currently my most favorite portrait handheld console! I always liked the design of it. I watch television on this as well as play games. Battery life is phenomenal on the 405V and the stock frontend is not bad either. May get the Cold Gray one later, it looks nice as well.
*I also have the Wood Grain 351V in my collection. I'm waiting on one more portrait based handheld to be released, the Trimui Smart Brick. Then I would have a total of 3 portrait retro handhelds and 1 GB Colour. I would have 4 portrait handhelds in my collection.
It’s a nice grey. Bit of a purple hue to it.
@@adinwalls I currently have a 505 in that same DMG color scheme.
@@jonathonearl482 ya the grey is the only nice looking one.
Always been a sucker for handhelds since Game Gear and Game Boy, a sucker for wood in everything...this machine is thus a dream come true, an almost flawless design for those of us who love vertical setups.
In order to be perfect it should have a universal removable battery tho...anyway I guess I will have to wait for 2027 EU legislation to come online for my next model...for now this one will do fine!
Great review! I also have the RG405V....and i cant get much to work in the way of PS2. WHat emulator are you using and are you tweaking a ton of settings??? I cant seem to get SSX Tricky or GTA Vice City to play without studdering non-stop. Unplayable really. Any tips or help there??? Really appreciate it.
Hey I am using AetherSX2. EE cycle rate. Max overclock (3). And resolution at 1x - I do think I mention it in the video but you can get the latest version from the AetherSX2 discord.
Been looking for a handheld that could play PS2/GC games, and this has caught my eye. Thanks for this.
It doesn’t play all the PS2/GC games but it plays a fair amount.
Question, after you map the buttons for any given game, does it save that mapping so that the next time you open that game, even if you play other games in-between, the button mappings will recall each time?
If you are referring to retro arch you just need to “save current configuration” before closing retro arch.
Love the color, I have the trans purple, but I have the grey on the way.
Someone that is finally honest about the setting upo of the RP2, Thank You 🔥🔥
I love this design and feel 🔥🔥🥰
Thanks for an awesone share, I'm still watching🔥🔥🔥👌🏾
Hey man nice to see you again! Thanks for watching
Thanks for this video Adin.
I have this device and I enjoyed watching. Could you show how to use the "rewind" function? I don't need to fast forward every time I mess up. 😮
In RetroArch you just need to see how it’s mapped but not all emulators have rewind.
@@adinwalls So cool that you were able to reply back. I just want to be able to rewind NES or Game Boy. They are brutal sometimes. Gonna have to look into it. Thank you.
I really like its big 5500mAh battery, seems to be the biggest of all the retro handhelds, nice one Anbernic!
Yup 😊
Have you done a video on how to add games to this? Where to get Roms and how to add them?
I'm struggling with this
TH-cam TOS
Does your save games actually save and can you do it from inside the game instead of slot saves
Yup, depending on the emulator
Can I ask how you find racing games with shoulder buttons like these? Are they just binary? I like the look and size of this one
The shoulder buttons are just binary as you say. Racing games are nice on this device though. However I do think a horizontal device is ideal for racing games.
@adinwalls thanks very much for writing back. Good to know
I see terrible things on forums about ambernic long term button durability, do you find this to be the case or have you not had these issues?
My first device the RG350M got a lot of use and apart from the buttons squeaking there was not apparent wear of the membranes.
Dude, I want to ask you, is the device still good and also do you regret buying it? The other issue is, can I download external emulators to download some games that are not available on the same device?
Hey this is a new device so ya it’s still good! I don’t regret it at all, it’s a solid console. You can download any Android friendly emulators.
Hey mate love the video, I have the RG405v and have been putting PlayStation games on it without any issue. I’ve tried putting God of War on it but when extracting the file onto the SD card I keep getting an error “errno=27 file too large” I’m just wondering if you’ve run into this and if there is a fix for it. I’ve seen that it may be the SD card format issue but I am unsure and don’t want to reformat the card and lose all the data.
Thank you
Side note the game still runs after this error but I imagine it’ll eventually crash
Hey is that PS2 god of war? I am playing that right now with no issue. What format is your rom?
@@adinwalls yes PS2 sorry. It’s FAT32 it’s happened to a couple of larger games they’ve copied exactly 4.29gb and then given an error, Bully, God of War and 50 Cent Bulletproof
Hey there no I mean what’s the file extension of your ROM is it a normal .iso file. Also what emulator are you using.
@@adinwalls yeah man it’s ISO and I’m using Aethersx2 haven’t changed anything the RG405v came with
Does the device come with all those games or do you have to go and find them?
It comes with some but these are my ROMs
Wow, it took me long to find your channel.
Welcome… 🤗
@@adinwalls Thanks. You have an earnest way of discussing and reviewing. It is very rare in this TH-cam ecosystem, I like it.
@ennohex thank you I appreciate that so much!
Which card are you using 128gb or 256gb and does has kingdom hearts 2?
I scroll down and read our beloved friend comment on this review.. i saw ur reply with full of love buddy.. keep it up man.. ❤
Hey man. Thanks. Not sure exactly who the beloved friend is because TH-cam has a few of those roaming around but yes I try to keep it kind
Still rocking my rg353v
Nothing wrong with that! I want to put Pico8 on mine
5:41 - There's really only one reason I could look past this flaw of Anbernic's. If someone intends to keep the device offline, having those preinstalled is actually really convenient. This practice of theirs is reason enough to want to keep the device offline, in my opinion. But you're right-- people should be paying for those if they haven't already. Those devs make this retro hobby worthwhile.
Anyhow I'm a little rusty on modern Android. About 10 years ago backing up purchased APKs wasn't too difficult for us tech heads, but having revisited Android via RP3+, the only way I can find is logging into the Play store with Aurora Store and setting it to not delete the .apk after installation. Yet another case of "do you trust the third party handling your data?"
Ah I don’t worry about all that. I just use play store and download the other apps directly from GitHub etc.
I had to do factory reset because at first all ps2 audio was extremely choppy
Which card are you using 128gb or 256gb and does has kingdom hearts 2? and I already know it has kingdom hearts 1 which I saw a video.
There seems to be something going on at the end of the video where it goes t a black screen for a while.
Oh dear. Thanks for the tip
can it connects on multiplayer battle?
Could you share the graphical settings you used to test the ps2 games? So many different options to toggle it is overwhelming lol. Open GL or Vulkan? 1x? 2x? I know each game will vary. Hoping to be pointed in the right direction.
Hey there. As a rule of thumb I use Vulkan. You can change 1x 2x etc per game depending on performance. I generally leave EE cycle rate to 50% and I set the max under/overclock to 3
I have rather big hands ( I am 6 foot 3 inches tall) i wanna get one of these devices but wanna get one that would fit my big hands well. Suggestions?
Hey man. Honestly in terms of buttons one of the original hardware devices like the PS Vita might be for you. In terms of new devices, the Powkiddy X55 isn’t as powerful but is nice for big hands. But that’s kind of it. Powkiddy’s X28 is a big device but the buttons as small.
I really enjoyed this video. That said, it goes a bit art house in the last few minutes and I don't think it was entirely intentional?
Haha, I am fixing it! But thanks for watching!
Does it run Urban Reign Ps2 properly?
What TheFox did was leave the system playing Crash Bandicoot on PS1 - screen 50% no wifi ,and he left the game just run using a rubber band on the analogs and the video shows it getting 17h and 12min or so.
Aha. Thanks for that.
Will the Android version of Launch box work on this?
Thanks Adin for the video.
By the way, which one will you recommend, RP2S or RG405V?
There are so many variables going into that: performance, form factor, screen size. You need to decide which versions of those things you want
@@adinwalls put aside other factors and only one factor that is important which is “value for money”. Which one will you recommend?
@epipongi check GoGameGeek for pricing, there’s a link in my description.
18:30
Iirc there's a setting for stretching the screen other than going Fullscreen
I don’t think so
@@adinwalls try "Graphics > Display Layout & Effects > Stretch checkbox"
Albeit I'm using a different device (Android phone), it does the trick switching back and forth from 16:9 to 20:9 aspect ratios.
"Fullscreen" checkbox does nothing on my device as well.
does the god of war games come included on the device?
Not sure but you can add it
Does the touch screen work for 3ds/ds input for games that require it?
Yes
@@adinwalls Thank you. I've seen a few reviews showing 3DS games, but no one shows touch screen used in game.
Good video and channel bro.
Thank you!
Got my Powkiddy x55. Gonna wait for the Odin 2 to be out for awhile and tested. The T618 chipset is just not good enough for GC/PS2 imo. Too many good games run slow or dont run at all and no upscaling. Odin 2 will do that.
Oh ya Odin 2 is the king.
That's awesome!
This video is pushing me one step closer to pulling the trigger on this device
Do it… do it now 😂
@@adinwalls oh jeez here we go back down the rabbit hole 🤣
It's definitely not the most visually appealing in my opinion. However, it does look very comfortable! Great video!
Hey man, ya it's a chonker but that's it's charm
man I have to visit you at some point to get me setup with a handheld as well :D
Sounds like a plan. We will waste a few hours and a beer
I played Prince of Persia sands of time on mine also Resident Evil 4 Plays well though it runs smoother on GameCube I think you need to tweak settings a little more to get those to run
Thanks man. Yes. I just did a stock “as it arrives” test.
Can I destroy the software if I play PS2 games that too slow and anbernic will go it maximum ? Or will it be only, like you said, slower ?
It will just be slower. Software can handle it.
Can it play - Star Ocean: Till The End of Time - smoothly?
I haven’t tested it but it’s very similar to the Role Player games I tested in the video. I am sure it will work okay. But maybe look for one of those videos where guys test loads of games.
Haha, I absolutely love the design. I just wish it was able to run GC and PS2 well enough. Unfortunately most of their libraries aren't really enjoyable. I love my RG405V but I think its gonna be returned in favor of an odyn 2. It just doesn't compare at all power wise. I love the vertical form though...
Oh yes an Odin 2 is considerably more powerful.
i was thinking this thing would be used best with a grip
Is this able to play def jam fight for ny? That's the bar I'm setting. Soon as I find a handheld that plays it, I'm in!
I played def jam vendettah and defjam fight for new york on ps2 emulator on steamdeck both run smooth as butter ! Maby thats the handheld for you!
Please make a video of the performance after installation of garlic OS
Good idea
Could you test pac man world 2? Nobody has, and i really want to know.
There must have been loadshedding at the end of the video.
I am writing this comment on an ambernic rg405v
The internet will implode…
Just ordered one
Can we put simcard on this?
No 😊
I feel like this is the console right before the upgrade version you actually wanted 😂
haha
Subscribed
Yeeha! 🙏
I just feel like the d-pad and face buttons should be a little larger, maybe even SNES controller sized, it would help with how ugly the device looks overall even if it's ergonomic as heck.
Agreed
Im going after the Retroid pocket 4 pro next week.😂😂😂😂😂
Gta san andreas getting 5 fps literally...
Proceeds to label as "plays quite well"
Does this console have mario, yoshi gba?
You can put those games on, yes
I understand everything that you are saying. I just got my Anbernic rg405v. See through purple GameCube vibes. 512 gig SD card. Playstation 2 and GameCube emulator. Retroid pocket 3 plus is better.love your video. California.. united States of America
Hey man. Ya the Retroid is better but you’ll get a lot of joy out of the rg405v 😊
is it really not for outside use
Hey the screen will be fine outdoors.
00:28 i dont know what you mean when you say comparing it to the retro pocket 2s then you said it again
Retro pocket 2s
Not sure what you mean - I was just saying the RP2S is better looking.
The 405v or Retroid flip
That’s the big question isn’t it! Haha
@@adinwalls yah it is really
@TheBoneFather you can check out my Flip review if you haven’t already. bit.ly/3RTsFIE In terms of aesthetic, the Flip is great. Also controls are really nice on it. The Anbernic isn’t as good looking but comfy, but you’re also dealing with a vertical device. In the end get the one that gives you joy 😊
Which handheld is better rg405v or rg405m?
The 405M is just more expensive. I would also argue that despite the plastic shell that the V is actually a bit better built. But identical in performance.
@@adinwalls thanks;)
I bought one of these retro handheld emulation devices a while back. It was a Powkiddy rk2023. Could not emulate DS games period. Which was the whole reason I got it. They advertise that it can and then they install DS emulators and it can't actually play any games. Just goes to a white screen and you can move a tiny black dot around with the right analog stick. You can't even get back to the menu from there. You have to shut the device completely down and restart. Lol. It's absolute garbage. Very rattley buttons too. It's fine for anything up to PS1. Couldn't get DS, PS2, Dreamcast and many others to work properly on it. I ended up just buying an actual DSi and have been using that since. Emulation is pretty cool but the games are always more fun and more enjoyable on the original hardware. That rk2023 has so many issues. Would take a while to list them all. Anyway, my point is I wouldn't buy another device like that. Honestly, my phone can do anything those handhelds can do and I have a nice little controller that's easy to take around. I tried one out and discovered that it's really just a waste of money.
@14:58 omg
"he just hangs out in there inside of your device, pay him no mind"
Haha. Ya just mind the pedofile
i wish there were more shell options for the vertical series all 3 options look kinda ugly
it's not the colours that are the problem haha
@@adinwalls i know im just saying it makes it harder to pick one for me
Test Ring of Red PS2 and let me know if it works.
There are quite a lot of game tests on the T618 chipset. You should be able to search for it on TH-cam.
Anbernic has a bad habit of making beautiful consoles with bad screens, apart from consoles with OLED screens.
Well the 405 series weren’t so much bad screens as they were ruined by choices made in developing Android for them. But ya, the OLED is great on the RG505 is great but it could have looked better in my opinion.
In what way the Gamecube performance is good? It looked terrible in the video.
Okay let’s downgrade my classification to “fair”?
Sure but the thing is, emulation needs to be at 100% speed to be usable. If you don't have that you get both native and emulation related slowdowns. You also get audio stuttering, normally, but i don't know how this device handles that.
This is not a device that can handle PS2/GC/Wii emulation.
"It's a retro game about a retro game on a retro game handheld" 🤣
And the universe never imploded?!
i mean this console is good . but tbh for me to convince buy this thing is to improve the ppsspp . its so laggy bro . i have friends wants this but every version of it always the same when it comes to ppsspp so laggy
Hey man PSP isn’t laggy on the Rg405v
Obviously, the best game of all times... except for.... other games :D :D
Haha yup
Thumbnail title of "Pocket PS2" is an over statement. Almost to the point of click bait unless you put a question mark at the end. ie "Pocket PS2?"
Ya man it’s almost like this TH-camr is trying to get views or something!
If you want to play PS2 portable, its better to take a android flagship and a good controller 👍
complaining about anbernic pirating the emulators is kind of weird when these things are practically piracy machines XD
ehm, I mean of course I own all the games I emulate. I just loaned them all out to a friend....
Is good console. ❤
Quit lying that wooden one is horrendous
Haha, funny enough it was the one I got most interest for when I sold a bunch of devices last year.
why would someone with an android flagship buy this?
That’s kind of like asking why would a person with a Ferrari F50 also buy an SUV. They’re the same but do different things for different situations. Some people don’t want to use their phone for gaming and want the controls built into the device.
RETROCEPTION
Why would anyone play ps2 gta san andreas on this when the android app of the game would run way better
To test it?! 🤕
@@adinwalls
well if thats your reason. Theres alot of ps2 games and i wouldnt bother with testing. Id run what i want to play only
Okay
lol 15 fps in ps2 games what a thrash
Please configure the emulator… the games will run better than this video
Hey there. The emulator was set to max efficiency in this video. Is there something I am missing to improve performance?
It’s a shame this thing is so ugly. Hopefully they can fit this chip into the RG353VS body at some point down the line.
Hope it is true... Bc ps2 have alot of better game
The device looks very ugly, I prefer their older smaller model with the analogs. But this seems strong enough.
Ps2 runs like shite.
Can you play Android games with this real buttons without some third party mapping software?
Yes. But only games that have controller support, otherwise you need to use button mapping apps
What kind of pocket knife is that?
It’s a Browning. Got it at a local market actually.
@@adinwalls very nice!
Love ur channel good sir
Yeesh, what an aimless "PS2 test" video. Clickbait, much?
Thank you for addressing the setup! As a very lazy semi-hobbyist, my favorite device so far is the Anbernic RG353V. In general I tend to prefer Linux based devices because I am terrible with Android manual setup. Getting this device and having it just work out of the box with a dedicated fontend button was a dream come true. Finally a 6th gen capable device that I can play out of the box without spending the day setting up
Ya Anbernic are inching closer to a seemless experience
You summarised what I was thinking…I was waiting for some device like that to upgrade from RGB20s without headache…
Which card are you using 128gb or 256gb and does has kingdom hearts 2? and I already know it has kingdom hearts 1 which I saw a video.
Which card are you using 128gb or 256gb and does has kingdom hearts 2?
Hey I am using a 128GB and you need to use your own ROMS
@@adinwalls oh okay thanks.
