I'm so happy for you and your puffers!!! I think that Amazon Puffers are a great fish as long as you are willing to change things up to make them happy. Once they are.... best fish ever. And you will start to notice they all have their own personalities and places they like to hunt.
What a relief eh? Good diagnosis and I’m sure worth the effort. It’s all about making those cuties comfortable. Once my community tank thins out by natural causes, I’d love to get some tiny puffers as well
I just tested it with a towel. I draped a towel on the tank to block the side they were surfing. They instantly stopped surfing. I guess I can tape a tank background to get the same result. Thank you for the video and congratulations on your results. Your tank looks great
Great job on the new setup! I'm so glad you had an immediate improvement in the puffers, they are so adorable. Very nice idea to line the inside of the tank. I noticed with my bettas that adding black outside the glass only made their reflection more obvious, but they've adjusted, I'm not sure your puffers would have.
Looks so good! Reminds me of switching substrates in my nano tank. It went from a three color gravel to flourite black which made it look more real. Its good to hear they are acting like actual fish lol! Good video.
Great makeover tank looks amazing I had the same problem with 1 of my fahaka puffers surfing the glass he actually completely ruined his 120 gallon acrylic tank he was biting the talk and taking gouges out of it and completely scratched the hole front panel,I’d only just moved him to the 120 he was fine in his old tank anyway it took me almost a hole day to rescape I also had to turn the tank round so that the scratched panel was against the wall and was then covered with plants and the sides a did exactly what u did and used tank divider stuff to black them out and a few well placed plants, the difference in the fish was night and day he was so much more relaxed and happy he’s now a 10inch beast
i love the look of it know.. especially when the background becomes black. its very soothing to the eye and it makes the fish color more pop out. great job! :)
This happened with my pea puffers. You did the right thing. I had to put all my tall Java ferns along the sides and back. It worked as well. In hindsight, moss walls would have been more effective for me but it gets kind of crazy over time
Beautiful!! Just beautiful! Guess what...Christmas came early for me...I got a 20 long tank kit!!!! My hubby is too kind. Going to make it a Beta sorority tank. There are hello's coming your way!!
A few other thing you may want to try are India Almond leaves, and top floating plants. Just use six small leaves...don’t boil them, or use too many that it will stain the water if you don’t like that. I also use a lower light and a low Red-Orange-yellow hue. Also, I leave a very lite algae film on the glass...not enough to even notice when viewing front on. Don’t keep to many in one tank, even if it’s huge...they tend to go after each other. I feel like the fewer you have in a tank...then their personality will just explode. You will be their true love, and may even puff for you. Goo luck!
No kidding? Puffers watch their own reflection? What divas...😉 Really interesting. The makeover looks fabulous, Shelia. I can appreciate how much work that was! I've been thinking about pea puffers in a new tank build, so thank you for sharing this!
So glad to hear you have found a fix. I have a baby Black Moor in a quarantine tank right now doing this. She didn't do it for the first few days we had her and now she is just surfing all the time. Do you think white choragated plastic from the craft store would help? Since my fish is black I'd like to NOT use a black background- if that makes sense?
Yes, I would also do erythromycin and rid ich. Because they’re wild caught they will likely come with all sorts of parasites. I did a round of general cure, then the ich treatment and then erythromycin. That all took about 3 weeks and then I did another round of general cure. Whenever they are moved to a different tank they will often develop ich again so we then had to do another treatment. It’s been a long process but so worth it. Try and get them eating snails and freeze dried krill as soon as you can. Eating that as their main diet will mean you have to trim their teeth less.
Thank you for the help I did do a lot of research but some of the things you told me I didn’t know. I also have three dwarf puffers in a 40 gallon breeder the amazons will also be going into another planted 40 gallon breeder.
This behavior of "surfing" is actually common with nervous or lonely fish also. As I commented on many topics related to the puffers, they are social creatures who have a hierarchy - a pecking order of sorts. Male gouramis and other labyrinth fish, specifically, do this all the time as well. Although it seems like a drastic idea to put more than 1 puffer or share a tank with another puffer, they need company of their own kind ironically. My experience with rasboras or other similar fast moving fish housed with puffers is that those other fish actually bully the puffers. These schooling and shoaling fish like White Mountain Clouds or Harlequin Rasboras will pester other fish in the tank actually. The puffer depending on its size will mind its own business most of the time and only bother another fish if they are in the way of the puffer's exploration or food.
Where do you get your aquiram lights for a 10gal? My betta is in a 3gal I have an extra 10gal but I don't have the light or filter for it but I can move her till my mice get a bigger cage witch will happen soon I hope. I always want to have an extra tank incase my female mice began to fight.
I had a betta fish that I had to black out the sides because he was hurting himself with his constant flaring and he would ram into the glass, he was pretty beaten up but when I blacked out the sides that completely changed his behavior! he seems much happier
How did you black out your tank? I have a beta that swims a long the tank so much. He doesn’t flare at him self. He just swims like he’s trying to get out.
blackplet I used black poster board, I just taped it on, you have to replace it when it gets too wet but I found that poster board works better than construction paper it lasts longer
Hi the old tank looked good but the new tank looks amazing much more natural, with the Amazon puffers being wild caught the more natural feel of the tank and most of the glass been covered up the fish obviously feel a lot happier, great job 👍 Ps l've just checked out your website and realized that you are in the US but your accent is the same as mine merzyside! 😂😂
I don’t see why not. Minimum tank size 30-40 gallons. Ours live with Harlequin rasbora, ember tetras, betta fish, kuhli loaches, corys, plecos and shrimp. They have never been aggressive to any of the fish. The tank is very heavily planted.
Yes i love the look of them swimming in a group of about 10 or more😊 and i wanted to start with a decently sized tank too as water parameters dont swing as drastically. Still trying to do some research before i begin!
Omg the tank looks amazing. This might be a stupid question but did you put the divider on the inside or the outside of the tank. And what material is it that you use???
I call it riding the glass, but essentially when a fish swims against the glass instead of throughout the tank. It's a sign of stress or unhappiness; or in this case becoming fixated with their reflection.
Hey Sheila, quick question. I'm getting ready to setup an upgrade from a 15g to a 50g tank. I was going to make it a heavily stocked community nano tank but I could happily shave the numbers and types of fish down if I could then keep an Amazon Puffer Fish or 3 (I think 1 ideally) But I already have a honey gourami pair and some neon tetras (8 that I wanted to make 20) Idea is to go for an aquascaped heavily planted tank. Any way, the question iis, do you think honey and neons would be okay with an Amazon Puffer Fish? I'm thinking not but your video is giving me hope ;)
Hi, Amazon puffers generally do well in community tanks but there are never any guarantees. I would do more than one as they prefer to be in groups. Make sure you quarantine them and treat for parasites. They can be difficult to keep with lots of glass surfing and some can be very picky eaters. We have been very fortunate with ours but had to modify the tank to stop the surfing. As much as I love these fish I wouldn’t keep them again.
I have a question!(anyone's helps!!) so my past betta just passed away because of velvet! How do I clean the tank and make sure all the left over velvet is gone!
Sheila, do you know Aquaproa here on TH-cam? He had a ton of puffers in 1 tank and he removed a bunch and I think he's looking to rehome them. He just posted a video about them. Just thought I'd point it out.
Hi! Random question: can someone who is knowledgeable about filters help me? I want to purchase an Imagitarium PRO Delux Freshwater Aquarium in the 3.7-gallon size and use a sponge filter in it, could I put it in one of the back compartments behind the divider or would it have to go in the main section of the tank? thanks!
1rst: It's my birthday! 2nd: So sorry you have this issue. My Green spotted puffer was surfing 24/7, and it turns out the water parameters were way out of tune. My puffer got weak, and died. Maybe if you move them to a new tank, it will work better 3rd: The new tank looks awesome!
Hey Sheila if u are looking for Amazon puffers on aquarium coops last fish unbox8ng he showed he had some in quarantine so I would on on the long out from them
Couldn't you have simply painted the back and sides with a black acrylic paint? That's what I've done on my tanks that are too close to windows. I get the sample size Behr paint from Hope Dept for less than three dollars and it covers many tanks.
Under normal circumstances that would have been a possibility but the tank is difficult to move and there was nowhere to put the fish for the length of time that would have taken to do. Also we did try putting black styrofoam on the back and sides of the tank and it made no difference so we wanted to block the sides from inside the tank.
I have 5 MBU puffer from my neightbor they fight realy bad in his tank one year ago. 1 died but i put 4 in my realy big tropical greenhouse pond and they are not aggressive to anyone, funny thing is this year my kids spot little baby puffers i dont know how but they breed we found 9 little mbu's.
K.J.D-Channas /Pythons Projekt Pond if you can breed more mbus then you can make a fortune from selling. That's of course if you want to see or have like a massive mbu pond
This is a testament to a more natural environment impacting behavior. I like the rescape and the fish look great.
Thank you!!
Well said. You both are getting me very interested in this fish. Already have a snail infestation.
I'm so glad they are doing better
Tank looks great, you really got an eye for scaping. I'm glad to hear the puffers are doing better!
thank you!
I love the new natural look!
Thanks.
the new tank looks better, thumbs up for you
I'm so happy for you and your puffers!!! I think that Amazon Puffers are a great fish as long as you are willing to change things up to make them happy. Once they are.... best fish ever. And you will start to notice they all have their own personalities and places they like to hunt.
Thank you. Yes, they’re really starting to show personality, they’re so adorable.
What a difference. I like this more Natural look and the fish stand out nicely. Glad the puffers are doing better.
It gives it a very nice look with that black divider material
So glad it’s working!! Whether due to blocking their reflection or just providing security. Also, the new scape looks great!!!
So covering the glass did make things better that's great news. The tank looks absolutely beautiful.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the new setup!!!!!
Thanks!
oh gosh! So glad they are doing better. Love the puffers!!!!
Thanks!
What a relief eh? Good diagnosis and I’m sure worth the effort. It’s all about making those cuties comfortable. Once my community tank thins out by natural causes, I’d love to get some tiny puffers as well
Wow, such a big difference! Love the new tank setup
Awesome! Glad your puffers are eating and seem much happier now.
Amazing... I need to give my 40 gallon a make over. Will never be as nice as your tank haha :')
So happy for you. You did a great job for your fishies!
Love your videos and look forward to them all the time. Thank you for the education!
That's quite the tank makeover. I liked the original version, but I think this new scape looks even better.
Wow, big transformation with the puffers and overall tank! Thanks for sharing!
The tank looks great! So happy that the puffers are doing well in their new setup!
It looks amazing! I'm so happy that you've been able to improve their condition. Best of luck in the future!
Thanks!
omg they are so adorable. I am glad they are happier now.
Wow the big effort you put in the aquarium really paid off! Congratulations 😀
Thanks.
What an experience! Thank you so much for sharing all of your hard work and explaining the problem, resources, and solution. Love ya
Thanks Susan! Yes, well worth the effort.
I just tested it with a towel. I draped a towel on the tank to block the side they were surfing. They instantly stopped surfing. I guess I can tape a tank background to get the same result. Thank you for the video and congratulations on your results. Your tank looks great
Thanks for sharing
Yes, love this setup much better.
Me too, thanks!
Nice nice nice . Very good fishkeeper.
Thanks!
They're like, "who is that good looking fish I see? I must find out."
Autumn Swift Lol, they have huge egos XD.
Nice makeover.Fish tank looks great.Hope fish will also love this
soooo much more beautiful!!!
I love the new look. I hope your puffers like it!
Great video!
Thanks, they love it.
They’re so stinking cute! So glad you guys figured out a solution.... for the most part 🙌🏻
Wow really amazing decor. Congratulations
wow, i love the new tank scape! i really like the more nautral looks, and you guys nailed it!
also, I'm glad everything worked out with the puffers.
Thank you!
It looks so beautiful, I love the new setup! Maybe the backing puts the focus more on the scene, too. Nicely done.
Glad it worked out. Tank looks cool with those black sides as well. :-)
So happy with it. The puffers are amazing now, they will eat anything and are so much happier. It was well worth the effort.
Looks so good! Reminds me of switching substrates in my nano tank. It went from a three color gravel to flourite black which made it look more real. Its good to hear they are acting like actual fish lol! Good video.

That's wonderful to hear it worked for you too. It is a lot of work but so worth.
Great looking tank. Love it love it love it.
I love it and they are adorable
WOW! That's incredible. I'm so happy for you. 💚🐠💚
Thanks!
looks awesome!
Really nice rescape, I love the look
I love the makeover, beautiful 😊❤
i love the look of it know.. especially when the background becomes black. its very soothing to the eye and it makes the fish color more pop out. great job! :)
I love all of your scapes!!
Yay new video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it looks very good good idea using ur tank divider material..
Looks sooooooo amazing 😍💚
This happened with my pea puffers. You did the right thing. I had to put all my tall Java ferns along the sides and back. It worked as well. In hindsight, moss walls would have been more effective for me but it gets kind of crazy over time
Yes, it seems to be a very common problem. We tried blocking with loads of plants but for us it didn't work.
Beautiful!! Just beautiful! Guess what...Christmas came early for me...I got a 20 long tank kit!!!! My hubby is too kind. Going to make it a Beta sorority tank. There are hello's coming your way!!
Yay, look forward to chatting with you.
Puffers are so cute

I had one do that for weeks. The other one was happier.
Thats a great idea to try and solve that problem
Thanks it’s worked amazingly! They’re so happy now.
Great video ps I like the new look of the tank 😁👍
I love how almost every betta fry is like: WHERE DID OUR GRAVEL GO?
No kidding? Puffers watch their own reflection? What divas...😉 Really interesting. The makeover looks fabulous, Shelia. I can appreciate how much work that was! I've been thinking about pea puffers in a new tank build, so thank you for sharing this!
(I assume pea puffers might behave the same as Amazons.....
I don’t think they’re as prone to it as the bigger puffers but I’ve heard people say they still do it.
Nice vid love jour tank
So glad to hear you have found a fix. I have a baby Black Moor in a quarantine tank right now doing this. She didn't do it for the first few days we had her and now she is just surfing all the time. Do you think white choragated plastic from the craft store would help? Since my fish is black I'd like to NOT use a black background- if that makes sense?
It may work but not having tried it I couldn’t say for sure.
Your amazon puffers are so cute! 🐡
I just bought two Amazon Puffers they should be here any day now. I was wanting to get three but they only had two.
I hope they work out for you. What meds do you plan on using for their quarantine?
API GENERAL CURE should I be using anything along with that?
Yes, I would also do erythromycin and rid ich. Because they’re wild caught they will likely come with all sorts of parasites. I did a round of general cure, then the ich treatment and then erythromycin. That all took about 3 weeks and then I did another round of general cure. I am really loving the puffer fish I really want one but I don’t want to give it a bad home but please do more videos on them!!!
As we learn more we will do more videos.
This behavior of "surfing" is actually common with nervous or lonely fish also.

Where did the bettas go to?
The tank looks great Sheila. I don't think we can get puffers in Aust. They're spunky little rascals.
Those are dwarf freshwater puffers right? They are sooo adorable!
No they’re amazon puffers. These get to 4-5 inches.
In future i have to find out whats the indicators for breeding. I hope they do it again
I love the new scape! So many people have those puffers I feel like I'm missing out! What are all the fish in this tank?
Thanks, most people have the pea puffer, these get much bigger. The fish are harlequin Rasbora, Denison barbs and corys.
Lifewithpets oh makes sense. And thanks for telling me. :)
Where can I get some of these decoders? I'm actually currently setting up a pea puffer tank!
Where do you get your aquiram lights for a 10gal? My betta is in a 3gal I have an extra 10gal but I don't have the light or filter for it but I can move her till my mice get a bigger cage witch will happen soon I hope. I always want to have an extra tank incase my female mice began to fight.
There are links in the description box of the video that will take you to Amazon and a lot of the items we use.
Lifewithpets okay thank you so much
Do you keep your lights on 24/7 by any chance?
8-10 hours a day.
You should maybe try Rachel O`Leary. I know she has some puffers, but not sure what kind. She may be able to get you specific puffers
What is the fish with the black stripe going down their body with the little red line near the eye?
Denison barb.
I had a betta fish that I had to black out the sides because he was hurting himself with his constant flaring and he would ram into the glass, he was pretty beaten up but when I blacked out the sides that completely changed his behavior! he seems much happier
Thats great to hear!
How did you black out your tank? I have a beta that swims a long the tank so much. He doesn’t flare at him self. He just swims like he’s trying to get out.
blackplet I used black poster board, I just taped it on, you have to replace it when it gets too wet but I found that poster board works better than construction paper it lasts longer
emi . Okays thank you. At the moment I have a plastic folder on the back of the tank and that didn’t really help but I told try that.
blackplet ah yeah I would try some black poster paper!
Hi the old tank looked good but the new tank looks amazing much more natural, with the Amazon puffers being wild caught the more natural feel of the tank and most of the glass been covered up the fish obviously feel a lot happier, great job 👍
Ps l've just checked out your website and realized that you are in the US but your accent is the same as mine merzyside! 😂😂
Thanks. Yes, from there but live in the States now.
Lifewithpets great move I think I know where I would rather be 🐡👍
How many time a day do you Fred them ?? Thanks
Once a day, sometimes twice.
@@Lifewithpets72 but once a day should be perfect right
Can you keep these with rummy ones tetra
I don’t see why not. Minimum tank size 30-40 gallons. Ours live with Harlequin rasbora, ember tetras, betta fish, kuhli loaches, corys, plecos and shrimp. They have never been aggressive to any of the fish. The tank is very heavily planted.
Cheers thanks very much
How come you used eco complete? Do you prefer it over fluval stratum?
For a bigger tank the eco complete was much cheaper. I do prefer Fluval stratum over the eco complete though.
Lifewithpets Thank you! Would you recommend putting something over the fluval stratum, or can you keep it by its self in a Betta tank?
No, I wouldn’t put anything over it.
Lifewithpets Thanks. This will be very useful.
I have a male betta who constantly surfs the glass as well. He's in a 10 gallon tank on his own. What are your thoughts?
Im really interested in starting a tank with harlequin rasboras, do you think they're a good beginner fish?
Yes they’re a good fish, they need a 20 gallon minimum tank as they like to swim fast, also groups of 5 or more.
Thanks. It’s in the inside of the tank. It’s the same material we use to make our tank dividers.
What does it mean for a fish to surf the glass? Like what does it look like?
Surfing the glass is frantic swimming up and down from the top of the tank to the bottom in one place.
Lifewithpets Thank you!
What’s surfing the tank??
I call it riding the glass, but essentially when a fish swims against the glass instead of throughout the tank. It's a sign of stress or unhappiness; or in this case becoming fixated with their reflection.
Hey Sheila, quick question. I'm getting ready to setup an upgrade from a 15g to a 50g tank.
I was going to make it a heavily stocked community nano tank but I could happily shave the numbers and types of fish down if I could then keep an Amazon Puffer Fish or 3 (I think 1 ideally)
But I already have a honey gourami pair and some neon tetras (8 that I wanted to make 20) Idea is to go for an aquascaped heavily planted tank.

We have been very fortunate with ours but had to modify the tank to stop the surfing. As much as I love these fish I wouldn’t keep them again.
What kind of puffer and it's brackish water right? Iv always wanted a puffer. I have 4 freshwater tanks
Olivia Penrose it's an amazon puffer
Nope, freshwater
It's a freshwater Amazon puffer.
What kind of puffers are they?
Freshwater Amazon Puffer.
I have a question!(anyone's helps!!) so my past betta just passed away because of velvet! How do I clean the tank and make sure all the left over velvet is gone!
Wow. Such a nice scape and im so happy the puffers! But i notice the substrate is quite sharp. Isnt that harmfull for the corydoras?
Sheila, do you know Aquaproa here on TH-cam? He had a ton of puffers in 1 tank and he removed a bunch and I think he's looking to rehome them. He just posted a video about them. Just thought I'd point it out.
Thanks. His puffers are different to ours and shouldn't be mixed. Appreciate the thought though.
My betta eats and swims normally but when I walk by the tank he flares at me and surfs the tank glass is that healthy?
Yes, totally normal.
Hi! Random question: can someone who is knowledgeable about filters help me? I want to purchase an Imagitarium PRO Delux Freshwater Aquarium in the 3.7-gallon size and use a sponge filter in it, could I put it in one of the back compartments behind the divider or would it have to go in the main section of the tank? thanks!

Thanks! Happy birthday!
Hey Sheila if u are looking for Amazon puffers on aquarium coops last fish unbox8ng he showed he had some in quarantine so I would on on the long out from them
Thanks but he doesn’t ship fish.
Lifewithpets oh darn my bad
Couldn't you have simply painted the back and sides with a black acrylic paint? That's what I've done on my tanks that are too close to windows. I get the sample size Behr paint from Hope Dept for less than three dollars and it covers many tanks.
Under normal circumstances that would have been a possibility but the tank is difficult to move and there was nowhere to put the fish for the length of time that would have taken to do. Also we did try putting black styrofoam on the back and sides of the tank and it made no difference so we wanted to block the sides from inside the tank.
I it normal that my betta fish likes music, cause mine does
I have 5 MBU puffer from my neightbor they fight realy bad in his tank one year ago.
Wow, that’s amazing!!
Lunar i hope realy they do it again .
If this is true you need to contact a professional, because captive breeding of Mbu puffers has never been successful...
Claire Q in tailand two guys breed mbu's but noone dokument it. And 1 men in brazil also but all this happens in ponds what makes it hard to dokument.
First and hiii
Yay!
Early am I ?
