great video. I was having trouble wrapping my head around how the engine power got transmission. I couldn't find any kind of good explanation but watching you tear that down explained it all to me perfectly. A camera and a Haynes manual... That can be a dangerous combination, but perhaps the best way to learn.
If you have a large area to set ALL the parts as you remove them in a neat and orderly way, you wont go wrong. Well done for having a go and don't give up.
Yes, a worktable is next on the list. Right now all the parts are on the hood and fenders of the Moke, which is obviously a poor place for them. I won't give up! A little more money coming in and I'll order the parts I need to start rebuilding the engine!
One gearbox upgrade you should do is put a central oil pick up pipe as it removes the downside that is caused by long right hand bends causing oil starvation
A bit ouch, but I guess you're learning. Next time you remove a flywheel, it it doesn't move when a reasonable force is applied with the puller, just pour a kettle of boiling water over the flywheel and it'll usually come off then.
Hey man, you are brave to take all that apart when you probably didn't need to. Have you managed to put it all back together yet? I am just starting the same journey, but I wont be taking the gearbox apart as it is working fine. Thanks for the entertaining video. Keep up the good work, but if things don't come apart easy, I usually take a coffee break and think about it before I reach for the hammer.
I still have to order parts. I've been distracted by so many other projects over the summer! I will say I think this engine needed rebuilt. I probably didn't need to tear down the gearbox, but being a dumb @$$ and breaking the casing forced it. But, I'll have a reconditioned unit when all is said and done. This engine/gearbox was running with coolant in the oil for an unknown amount of time, as the head gasket was bad when I got it, and I drove it for 2 years.... Weak.
I definitely will when I go to reassemble. I was not able to find much for the teardown, so was largely winging it, plus relying on forums and whatnot!
Metric on an old UK mini engine? You are having a laff mate.. obviously an American..us brits invented the imperial system long before America was even heard of 😂😂😂
It's not about Support.. Its about people learning about classic cars.. and this NOT the way to do it.. .. Tear down is the EASY bit.. and he does it WRONG !! If you Tear Down... then be prepared to REBUILD.. And if you don;t do the REBUILD.. you just have a pile of rubbish.. wrecked a limited supply of parts that will never be made again...... that will NEVER BE SAVED... Just send you engine / transmission to someone .. and save the head ache... Just being cruel to be kind to my favorite car..
I am a professional mechanic myself and through the years i have repaired many Minis Gearboxes, but i have never seen a gearbox stripped like that and with those tools.

Brings back memories of tearing down mini engines at home, with basic garage tools. No engine stand. Such a simple engine to service and rebuild.

What happened at 23:55?:
I know everyone has to learn, but God leave it to someone who knows what there doing, painful.
Never mind the Hard Way - definitely the Wrong Way ouch
Well that’s enough to convince me not to go this far into the engine!
ha ha Matt you may have too....
Hi, enjoyed your video but you should defo check out mini mania's gearbox rebuild video.

when all else fails get a big hammer and bash the bejesus out of an alloy casting ??????? 6.21 min
Be easier with an engine stand and metric tools
Mini is imperial
@@MrKurns you are right ,don't even with metric, skinned knuckles ,ouch!
Metric tools, really? 😂
